Getting ready for a big occasion

orangejuicer · 28/10/2021 07:18

I have a few things booked in for November and December which I'm really looking forward to. I'd like to look my best/feel more confident and wondered if you had any tips on what you do to get ready for a big occasion?

I don't tend to make a huge amount of effort the rest of the year so I'm open to ideas!

I just went to a black tie do, first in decades. I ever fit a bra fitting a d got new underwear!! I felt fabulous!

Get your makeup done professionally. It always makes me feel amazing.

Mumdiva99 · 28/10/2021 07:28

When you say you don't make a huge effort thebrest of the year what does that mean? E.g. for me a good deferring session would be the start......waxing legs, sorting out bikini line.....no one will see it but I know it's done. Then a fresh hair dye to fix the roots and a cut. Book a blow dry for the day of the event if you like and have time.

asteroommatus · 28/10/2021 07:30

Good underwear and getting your make up done. I always get my make up done before a big event.

Because not only does it look better, but it takes a lot of pressure off getting ready.

Also get your hair styled or blowdried if you can. Some make up artists will style you hair and do you make up.

Means all I have to do is shower, go there and then come back and get dressed.

Make sure everything is planned in advance always helps me down to jewellery and nail varnish and every little thing so there's no faffing finding stuff.

Make sure you know what you’re wearing, including underwear and accessories, and that you know where all of those things are. If it was just one event I recommend hanging a cloth bag over the hanger of your outfit and putting in shoes, earrings, bra etc.

Choose an outfit that fits! Not one you need to lose weight to wear, or that needs two pairs of supportive underwear!!! There is loads of advice available online about flattering body shapes. Find something that suits you and is comfortable to wear. It’s very hard to project confidence if you’re constantly tugging at your clothes or trying to hold your tummy in.

Step up your skincare in the weeks before. If you’re not used to wearing make up practice a bit between now and then. It doesn’t take long to get the hang of it but it can be frustrating if you’re only doing it before you go out.

Book a hair apt for a blow dry on the day or day before each event.

I always get my hair, nails, spray tan and makeup done when going out to a big event.
New outfit and a glass of wine when I'm getting ready
Enjoy yourself

A good haircut and colour. Professionally Blowdried the day before/day of an event.
A fabulous new perfume for the season to boost your confidence and make you feel great.

MsSquiz · 28/10/2021 08:40

I always try to book someone for hair and make up for special occasions so it takes the pressure off me (even though I usually wear make up daily)

I also always try on my full outfit, including the underwear, accessories and shoes to make sure everything fits well and is comfortable.

Hair and make up professionally done.

orangejuicer · 28/10/2021 19:20

Thank you all, brilliant advice here Grin

I have my outfit sorted and just need to build in time to pamper myself I think.

Book your appointments just now for hair, makeup, etc @orangejuicer
I'm already booked in for Christmas hair, nails, spray tan.

mydogsaDoodle · 28/10/2021 19:50

I love the idea of professional makeup, how do you find someone good?
My local salon doesn't offer it.

JMAngel1 · 28/10/2021 20:21

You must all be very young - make-up and a blow- dry - if only Grin

5128gap · 28/10/2021 20:28

Really good diet, lots of sleep and fluids for as many days as I can manage before hand. Makes a difference to my skin and I feel lighter and fresher.

I am 40 next year. I have been using the woman who does my hair and make up for nights out for 5 years.

Though long before that I would arrange to have my hair done and styled that day if I had a big event.

JMAngel1 · 28/10/2021 21:22

Sorry I meant it it was only that easy. I'm 49 and getting ready for a night out is like painting the forth bridge!
I have a big night out in 2 weeks and need to get back on my beauty regime - I've fallen off the wagon the last month or so and look like it Grin
I will be using Nu Face every morning and LED mask at night.
Sheet masks 3 x week
Microneedling twice weekly
Teeth whitening
Exercise every morning - weights to get my arm definition back.
1.5 litres water every day
No carbs or sugar
Fake tan, gel toes and french manicure fingers
Hair cut, deep conditioning treatment.
I'm too old really for professional make-up - I prefer less is more now.

To be honest, I don't really knew where to start. I only wear minimal make up daily, and don't get my hair cut often. I think I'd be a bit intimidated Sad

That's alot, dedication right there Smile

I always have my nails done and never wear open toe shoes.

I wouldn't go through a 2 week schedule for an event tbh. Though it would take more than 2 weeks of weights to sort my arms out 🤣

But honestly, you aren't to old for professional make up artist. They don't a plaster it on. My best friend is 10 years younger than me. The person we go to does our make up very different. A good make up artist would do make up that suits you. Not that only suits one age group.

Its honestly, worth the research and finding a good one. Obviously, only if you wanted to.

I agree about the professional make up. I'm 52 and feel much less youthful with a full face of make up. However well its done I think you can tell I have a lot on and I feel like it looks like I'm trying to hide my age behind it. (I don't think this for everyone older, just me). Like you, I prefer to work on the under layers with skin care, diet and exercise, as otherwise I feel I'm just papering over the cracks. How does the micro needling work out for you? It's the only thing on your list I don't do!
JMAngel1 · 29/10/2021 15:46

@5128gap
I love it! I only use 0.25mm microneedling and go very lightly but it definitely plumps and lifts my cheeks, jowls and eye bags.
