Oh lord! What does one wear to the races?!

I'm off to the Cheltenham races next month and have never been before. My parents have been a lot. It'll be the private box and meal and everything. DM says I need to dress fancy. I'm not accustomed to such events and am shit at styling myself at the best of times! I'd prefer trousers as it'll be cold and I'm more comfortable in trousers. I'm a size 16/18. This is what I have so far! Please help!!!

blouse

I don't have a cashmere sweater but was also thinking about wearing a jumper instead.

I am not a regular at the races these days, but come from this world and will be going to the November meet. Previous posters are quite right. Think tweed or camel wool coat, faux fur tippet or scarf, cashmere or merino jumper, wool felt fedora or similar with feather or leather trim and flat or low block heel leather boots, all in muted Autumnal colours. You will look the part and keep warm. I would look at Joules, Fairfax & Favour, Rydale etc for inspiration and then shop on Vinted. Hope you have a great time!

This is what I’d look at

I just remember Cheltenham Racecourse being one of the windiest places I've ever been, Silverstone being another. So dress appropriately for warmth!

Bertiebiscuit · 06/11/2021 01:03

Save your money and don't go to the races - institutionalised animal cruelty for people with lots of money and no class - give the money to RSPCA

Mantlemoose · 06/11/2021 01:09

Whatever is most comfortable to help end the life of the poor animal that is dying with exhaustion at the end of the race or to help shoot the horse with broken leg etc. No they don't love it, they run because they're pushed to run. How anyone can call this sport I cannot comprehend.

Can't link but there's a pinterest thingy all about what to wear at cheltenham. Seems to be tweed with a modern twist, lots of trilby hats, cashmere scarves.

sleepykits · 06/11/2021 20:07

No fascinators!

Cheltenham is very much smart but appropriate. I normally wear knee high boots (flat), skinny jeans or trousers (dark), wool jumper, tweed or cord blazer and a felt hat. Add a scarf sometimes, leather gloves, small shoulder bag.

TeamSpike · 08/11/2021 16:15

Thanks everyone. I've bought a black jumpsuit and will wear a smart blazer and a coat.

To those coming on to make me feel guilty about going to the races. It was something that was bought for me, I didn't choose it and have never been before. I generally have zero interest in this event and do not condone the cruelty to the horses but thanks for the guilt trip

Hope you have a good time! Thanks

I go quite often and you have to dress for the cold.

Last year I wore a maxi dress (with thermal layer underneath Grin) with tan knee-high leather boots, long winter white coat and felt hat. It was about the right tone and also warm.

Yes to the camel coat!

Spodge · 08/11/2021 18:50

Look at the clothing sold by House of Bruar (online), particularly their country/tweed section and you won't go far wrong if you follow that sort of idea.

Definitely dress for warmth and with flat shoes. It's nothing like Royal Ascot and there can be a lot of walking about, especially if you want to go outside to place a bet with the bookies and watch down by the rail.

Shannith · 08/11/2021 22:25

I assume you are going for the paddy power? Cheltenham is proper jump racing and most people will be in tweed and boots. It's not Ascot - and why I love it!

Tweed jacket, brown leather boots and black skinnies or a mini shirt. Fur hat.

Shannith · 08/11/2021 22:27

Do not dress up in fancy clothes and heels. Wasted on Cheltenham and you'll be cold. County casual.
