So these 2 pics....the one with the child in the pic, this dress looks great on me I think.

But the other pic where I'm wearing a shawl it suddenly makes my top half look huge like big arms etc.

So the question is are my arms big or is it just the shawl deceiving me? I'm always complimented on my legs and I so love them, I'm aware my belly needs to disappear but I always thought my arms/upper body was nice and slim too but maybe nor?!

I don’t think it affects how your arms look ? Makes your boobs look bigger but not the rest of you. Is it a Coach scarf? I have a similar one I love.

sleepyhoglet · 23/10/2021 19:56

I think it looks a bit dated with the heels. That sort of dress looks better with flats or trainers

PheonixGlitterRepublic · 23/10/2021 19:59

Your arms aren’t big, but the dress is kind of fitted around the arms and floaty at the front. If you add a floaty shawl as well then the whole thing becomes floaty and you end up looking big. A fitted jacket looks better with that type of dress.

raymondanddebra · 23/10/2021 20:05

@Noeuf the shawl is m&s

The V neck look like it's higher up your chest and the dress looks shorter in pic 2. It makes you look top-heavy, like the dress goes straight down from your boobs. Pic 1 you seem to have more of a waist. I don't think the shawl makes you look bigger (and you don't have big arms) but the shawl might be heavy and pulling the dress down at the back, up at the front? Which is less flattering

turnabouttime · 23/10/2021 20:10

I'm struggling to even see your arms in pic 2

SilentBob · 23/10/2021 20:11

Honestly? Honestly honestly?

Something seems to have happened to the cut of the dress on the shawl photo- there is suddenly a line across your chest which isn't there in the first photo. It's cutting you off across your bust. Like the shawl has hoiked the dress upwards. The v-neck being shorter tells the same tale.

I'd still advocate that you wear what the hell you like and think you look absolutely fine in both photos, but the difference is there and seeing as you asked that's what I'm commenting on (iyswim)

Noeuf · 23/10/2021 20:11

Thank you! Love a big wrap. Dress is fab btw.

raymondanddebra · 23/10/2021 20:12

I wanted to showcase my legs as I spend my life in trainers

Yes I think it prob is a case of the shawl pulling down the dress at the back. When I wear it alone or with a normal cardigan/coat it's knee length dress like In the pic with my son

And, to answer the actual question, no- it's not your arms! It's the shawl thing- it's weighing you down at the back and dragging the dress with it!

raymondanddebra · 23/10/2021 20:14

@Noeuf it's from 2 years ago (the shawl) but im sure they have similar there now

The dress is primark I got it a month ago

Bloody hate shawls, they should be banned. But no, this doesn't make you look bigger. Just put it in the bin.

cloudtree · 23/10/2021 20:21

I frequently fall into the same trap. I’m slim but now I’m getting older anything that isn’t structured and fitted can very easily make me look huge depending on the angle.

I don’t think it does you any favours from the photos. I’m sure it’s comfy and helps hide your tummy etc and it does show off your legs but I think it adds bulk to your structure.

But I also agree with the others - ditch the scarf

raymondanddebra · 23/10/2021 20:27

What would I wear instead of a shawl? Not a long coat as it's not that cold but I need something and can't do a long cardigan as the sleeves on this dress are flappy so it'll look weird. Any suggestions? Links welcome

Maybe it’s the way you wear a scarf/shawl? I don’t usually wear them like that.

Noeuf · 23/10/2021 20:30

I love the dress

Ginfilledcats · 23/10/2021 20:35

I agree with pp, the shawl has pulled the dress down at the back so neck is higher so one of the tiers cuts right across your boobs. So not you.

Also agree that as it's a floaty dress, not fitted you can't then add more float with a shawl as it makes you look like you're hiding that you're in the more generous side, which from the first pic you absolutely aren't.

I'd style it with no tights (can see the sheer), trainers or for fancier nights, heeled Chelsea boots and a biker jacket I think. I'd also finish with a fedora style black hat!

Lovely dress and looks fab in first pic. Think the heels having an ankle strap look more dated too, though I acknowledge it's a damn sight easier to walk with ankle strap heels!

raymondanddebra · 23/10/2021 20:37

I'm not a fan of boots with dresses I'm afraid but I do love a biker jacket - just waiting to lose weight so I can get a size 12 or 14 and not an 18

Just so you are aware, you have small photos and your location visible on your screenshots.

Dress looks great. Agree that shawl is making it hang all wrong, and boots or trainers would look better.
