Rules of Boot Wearing

40 replies

Pinkwitcheshat · 21/10/2021 19:36

For some reason I never find autumn/winter footwear as straightforward as summer, when my trusty Birkenstocks / white trainers seem to go with most of my wardrobe and be (reasonably) fashionable.

So what are your rules of boot wearing for 2021/2022? I'm favouring:

  • Flat chunky boots with jeans slightly cuffed/rolled, a bit of sock showing is ok as the days get colder
  • Slightly smarter, low to medium heeled Chelsea type boots with black tights and skirts/dresses for work (chunky biker style boots not appropriate in my office)
  • I've put my stiletto boots away at the back of the cupboard as they feel dated now (sob). But I have some chunky heeled boots which I think (hope) are still reasonably modern??
  • I will only be wearing knee high boots over jeans if its wellington boots or my Ariat boots for country dog walks. But are flat black knee highs ok with a skirt and thick back tights for work/general wear?

Come on and sort me out fashionistas Grin

(Caveat - I firmly believe women should dress to please themselves and no one else and you should rock your boots however you please, I'm just personally trying to look a bit more "current" and not completely out of date after feeling like I lost my way a bit, which is why I am posting in S&B section)

I just got some new boots to update my look. My new selection is

Chunkyish black leather flat mid height chelsea boot (not too crazy chunky as I think that will date quicker)

Hiking boot with a trainer bottom, dark aubergine nubuck, ankle height bit more casual

Both of these work well with rolled up straight leg/mom jeans, which is good as I am phasing out the skinnies.

I also have (not new)

Black suede chelsea boot with block heel (for going out out!)

Two pairs zip up ankle boots, low heel, grey and tan suede.

One pair cheetah print flat chelsea boot (not chunky)

Boring but warm winter boots (for snowy days)

Blundstones in dark brown (I wear mostly for work)

jeans slightly cuffed/rolled, a bit of sock showing not a look I'd go for , too much like my trousers had shrunk in the wash or I'd grown out of them Blush

sleeker/smarter knee high boots over jeans I'd do this if they were skinny jeggings and heeled boots but I couldn't walk in them and I'd risk looking like Shurl Carter from Eastenders !

My regret is not buying some lovely sage green lace up boots in the Vegan Footwear shop in Brighton last week (no price on them but I reckoned £80ish looking at the others . I looked online they were £89 so close)
I thought Nah , I;ll find a vegan shop in London
(Might have to buy the boots online )

Yes I prefer a calf length boot though as full knee can feel a bit OTT.

@Nuffaluff

Hate nearly all the Grazia boots!
Aren't they all vile!

I forgot - I have a pair of ankle leopard print Boden ones bought in the sale.

Oh and a pair of slouchy suede/leather navy knee high Office boots.

currently eyeing up a pair of Boden ankle length navy boots.

Chunkyish longish Chelsea Boots for wearing with jeans/ trousers rolled up. Fancying a yellow pair!

Similar but lace-up and chunky (to wear with skinnies).

Calf-length patent bikers, also to wear with skinnies.

For muddy walks, wellies. Don't like long boots particularly (even if I can get them up my legs).

Never wear skirts.

@Mackmama

What about DM Boots? I’ve wanted some for years, now I’ve got some but I don’t think they go very well with any of my clothes!!
I live in my DMs! I’ve got about 15 pairs - something for every outfit.

I am not someone to be listened to on style though - my look is best describes as overly-sugared toddler at a birthday party Grin

I love boots and have a silly number of pairs. Don't care about looking 'current' and generally wear something if I like it.

Some of my combinations:

Brogue style lace up boots in brown with rolled up straight leg Levi's

Same boots in black, with midi dresses

Heeled knee high boots in tan, with shortish dresses or midi dresses

Flat knee high in black and brown - these don't feel right with much at the moment, but I still like them with skinnies for muddy walks, or with shorter skirts/jumper dresses

Chunky heeled lace up ankle boots, very 90s-esque - with midi dresses or with slim flare jeans

Pixie boots - with mini skirts and tights

Block heeled black suede - these seem to go with just about everything

Beige Ash suede cowboy style - with bootcut jeans or midi dresses

Whistles grey heels - only for taxi nights out, as I can't walk very far in them! They work with rolled up jeans, or bootcut or slim flare, but don't really work with skirts or dresses much, other than pencil skirts

Black heeled ankle boots, slightly platform - these work with just about everything, but too high for every day

I have other pairs but can't remember them off the top of my head.

Definitely get the yellow pair! I saw somebody in yellow trainers the other day and they looked awesome - coming from me who rarely ventures out of anything black, grey or navy!

So those of you wearing straight leg or mom jeans with ankle boots - do you wear them rolled up so they sit at the top of the boot? I have some flat ankle boots and keen to make them work with things other than skinny jeans/jeggings. Didn’t think they would work in winter!

Firesidefox · 01/11/2021 12:20

I'm loving this thread. Has kept me from my work for the past half hour, googling all the makes you lot are throwing out there. I love those Solovair dealer boots - had never heard of before and wonder if they're comfortable?

What shall I get for walking the dog? I live in London so won't be scrambling up fells, but got caught in a downpour yesterday and my usual boots were soaking. I would quite like to still look vaguely current while walking the dog and am late 40s.

Thank you!

Divebar2021 · 01/11/2021 12:48

@Firesidefox

For dog walking…( which I don’t do incidentally) how about a brown leather walking boot or the ankle high Hunter wellies… they look a bit like Chelsea boots but obviously waterproof. I’ve seen them worn in London on wet days ( no dog required)

Firesidefox · 01/11/2021 12:50

That's a good idea @Divebar2021 - I hadn't thought of Hunters. Thank you. I was getting stuck down a Dubarry hole and thinking do I really need to spend £300+, and even then, won't I look like a pre-marriage Kate Middleton at a point to point?

Just had a quick google and these look quite nice: www.hunterboots.com/gb/en_gb/womens-ankle-boots/womens-refined-stitch-detail-chelsea-boots/black/7280

Divebar2021 · 01/11/2021 12:54

@Firesidefox

They’re cool… I have some similar. I would happily wear with a skirt or dress too. Everlane do their own version which looks good but I haven’t seen it in real life.

evilharpy · 01/11/2021 12:58

These with almost everything but can't get away with them for work. Also have a pair that are quite similar but patent from Moda in Pelle.

These occasionally

Some black suede ones from Clarkes in a very similar shape to the leopard ones for work

On the odd occasion I'm dragged out for a walk somewhere damp/muddy I do have some proper waterproof hiking type boots.

Firesidefox · 01/11/2021 13:36

They're not in stock annoyingly, will check out Everlane, thank you
