Does anyone shed LOADS of hair?

I’m not sure there is anything I can do about it, and fortunately I’m not worried at the moment about my hair thinning because I still have a lot of it on my head. But it’s really pissing me off because my hair is everywhere! I can run my fingers over the carpet and pick up a clump. Lying in bed I can see strands on the sheet and pillow. It’s on my office chair, my car seat and worst of all it’s all over my clothes. I cannot wear dark clothes or things such as wool because the hair gets trapped in it and it looks awful, people pick hairs off me. This isn’t a new thing, it has always happened but if anyone knows of any tips to deal with it they’d be much appreciated.

Used to , as others have said it’s usually Vit D / in simple terms your body wants to absorb more sunlight and sheds hair to facilitate

Me. Mid-fifties and several years post menopause. It’s just normal for me, still as thick as ever and grows fast. It’s worse if I’ve gone more than a couple of days without washing.

Yep me... when I wash my hair and condition it, it comes out in clumps. I have to cut it out the hoover otherwise it breaks and it's all over the house.
My hoover jammed and when I took it apart I removed enough hair to make a guinea pig, it's so depressing. Please don't anybody be complacent about hair loss because you have thick hair atm - that used to be me 😔

But what are you meant to do about it? Other than vitamins and checking thyroid- done both and it’s still coming out in clumps!

I am constantly shedding hair abs I can’t understand how I have any left. My hair is really thick and doesn’t show any signs of thinning, it’s always been like this. When I brush my hair, the hairbrush will be pretty much to the end of the bristles full of hair. I have a Roomba that goes round upstairs once a day and the container is full of hair every time, washing my hair will result in a plug full off hair and my jumpers and coats always look scruffy because they’ve constantly covered in hair, even when I wear it tied back

SnowWhitesSM · 18/10/2021 07:08

Yup, I have long thick hair and every time I wash it I end up standing in a puddle where it blocks the plug.

I also can run my hand over the carpet and swirl up a clump. Dh ends up with my hair stuck in his bum Grin

Same in Autumn.
I remember the first Autumn it happened, which was the year I turned 14 and the year I started my periods ( so I guess it’s hormonal?).
It happens every year but this year it’s been unbelievable, though it’s beginning to settle now.
My ponytail often halves in thickness, I can’t wear any dark clothes , and If I don’t brush my (not long) hair thoroughly each day, I have huge tangles where loose hair knots up with the rest.
I find using a good scalp oil gets me over the worst.
I’m super grateful for my covid vaccine but i have wondered if some sort of immune response to it had worsened my hair loss this year. Never seen anything like the handfuls that have fallen out this year Sad.

mizu · 18/10/2021 07:21

Yep. Especially this time of year, I mentioned it to my hairdresser last autumn and she said it does happen around this time.

Mine is noticeably thinner, I don't suppose anyone else notices but I want my thicker hair back Sad

mizu · 18/10/2021 07:22

Just remembered we still have vit D tablets here left over from last year! Yay, I'll have my hair back in no time (here's hoping) Grin

GoWalkabout · 18/10/2021 07:25

My hairdresser says 'yes but you have loads of hair' so I'm just shedding a normal proportion.

toffeeshock · 18/10/2021 07:33

Yes and I’ve taken a high dose of vitamin d (and other vitamins) for years so it’s not that. It’s not an issue as as it’s thick and I have a lot of it. My DD is the same.

gogohm · 18/10/2021 07:34

Me, never been thick but noticeably thin from around 42, can't do ponytails etc as pathetic. Thankfully hair is curly so can bull it out with curls

MrsJackWhicher · 18/10/2021 07:39

Interesting thread.
I have actually noticed hair falling out in clumps but it has noticeably thinned in the last few weeks. Am assuming iron deficiency as I lost 13 kilos in 2months (deliberately, not ill health )and now am eating normally again and not main lining Diet Coke and sm taking multi its hoping it will just prove a temporary thing…

If I was younger I'd pay to see a trichologist just to make sure there was nothing else that could be done re supplements, etc. Because of my age the doc isn't interested and I'm already on levothyroxine - it's hard to reverse the process if it's coming out root and all but an expert might have some ideas?

Oh wow, this makes so much sense.

Mine falls out, I had bloods done and I am low in Vit D.

I’m also 45 so I’m sure there’s hormones at play too.

Gothichouse40 · 18/10/2021 19:20

Im not a doctor but I heard something about Biotin? Unfortunately I have no idea what this is, or, if it will help with hair loss. A Trichologist would be your best bet, or a nutritionist maybe?

Mrsbrownsbuoys · 18/10/2021 19:33

Yes I lose a lot. I'm now taking folic acid after telling my gp about other problems and having a blood test and I'm losing less hair than I was. I'm in my fifties. I also take thyroxine and it was increased at the same time, so not sure if it's the increased dose of thyroxine or the folic acid that's helping.
