Anyone else show a picture at hairdressers and end up with it nothing like it!

So fed up with trying to get my hair right. I am naturally dark mousey brown with increasing number of greys.
I’ve always had some highlights & then as the grey became more I added a tint aswell. The tint always looked okish until it started growing out & then it looked orangey.

This summer i had a full head of highlights & the tint as the hairdresser said alot of people do as they go greyer. I found it bit much and after a few more weeks it looked awful as it went from really blonde on the bottom to orange to dark/grey roots. The cost of this was extortionate so I went somewhere else a couple of weeks back.

I showed the new hairdresser various pictures, basically aiming more at a browny blonde look with caramel, honey colours. She said yes fine we’ll make the tint darker so closer to natural and then have some nice light bits. I said I’d like the light bits to be golden/honey tones & she agreed.
It’s awful. Really dark brown splodge of roots with chunks of almost white blonde bits. It looks dreadful.

I feel like every time I ask for highlights they just do one shade which is the lightest blonde there is. How do you get the a golden, caramel almost golden brown shades? Are they classed as lowlights not highlights?

I’m now looking at going somewhere else. I don’t get why it never looks remotely like the pictures I show. I wouldn’t mind at all if they were honest and said your hair won’t do that or that won’t suit you. But why do they say ok and then just do something that looks nothing like it?
I’ve wasted so much money. All I want is to cover my greys in a colour that suits my skin tone which is olivey, can be a bit sallow, with brown eyes. Orangey/yellow hair is washing me out & I just don’t know what to ask for next!

Any help appreciated please!

@Funkypickle

It's an industry where you get what you pay for.
Not sure I agree with that. I go to mid-range hairdressers and I've found some I'm happy with.

The worst colour I ever had was by a colour specialist who had won some national award for colour that year - it cost £180 and I looked shocking - bright yellow stripes on dishwater colour base.. The salon was called The Colour Room for crying out loud - you would think I would have been in safe hands Grin

Thanks for the tips everyone. I’ve managed to get booked in at the weekend with somewhere new. I’ve looked at their website and there are many examples of colour they have done that look really nice. I feel really worried about it though as I just can’t afford for this one to go wrong too. My DH is already a bit speechless that I’m about to spend even more money on my flippin hair! All I want is not to be grey and to have a colour that suits me. Why does that feel so hard.

I’ll post some pics of what I would like and what i have now..

@JMAngel1 I have also been paying a small fortune for the last couple of years for colour and I’ve never felt it’s been quite right for me. What I need is for a hairdresser to tell me what colours will suit my skin tone as I’m no expert and I am paying them for their expertise. But all they ever seem to say is what are we doing today.., I want someone to tell me what I should do!

Yes, post the pics - I have everything crossed for you.

The first one shows the top, too dark. The second one is the back although was taken at night with lights on so not natural light. The third is in daylight. Next I’ll post what sort of thing I would like.

So how do I get something closer to that?!

I’ve shown two different hairdressers this kind of picture before and never got anything like it & wasted a fortune😔

Personally I'd go in with scattered teasy lights and some babylites through the top panel and temples and soft balayage a glossing in between the foils and the tone the whole lot with a gold based toner.

Service wise a scattered half head of foils, balayage with a gloss and toner. Your hair condition looks decent as well.

Should be a very simple and straight forward fix. The balayage you have in there is decent it's just too high and blocky. Needs breaking up. The babylites and teasy lites will soften the whole look and make regrowth a breeze. Because of how light your highlights are already I'd suggest a revisit at the 4 week mark to top up the toner.

Good luck and please keep us posted

Littlemiss74 · 14/10/2021 21:45

I love this but have no clue how they would do this (they probably wouldn’t either!🤣)

I need to understand what colours will go best with my skin but I find it hard to visualise that. How do you which colours will go best with your skin?

Thank you so much for your advice @Funkypickle but I am just so confused by all the terminology. I’ve always had foils/highlights, how does this differ from balayage or are you suggesting I have both? Which kind of colours should I ask for? Is the gloss the same as a tint? And lastly what’s the minimum I could do maintenance wise to keep the greys at bay? Would I have to have highlights at each visit? I think this is where I went wrong before as I kept having them and ended up with a block of bright yellow blonde hair which I don’t want.

Teasy lites, babylites etc are all types of weaves that are done in foil. A glossing is a semi permanent colour. It will stick to precoloured lengths and ends better than a permanent tint will. Because you have recently had a tint to cover your grey you would not need another tint so soon. It could add more unnecessary colour and a possible band to break through. Also the glossing would not need to be dark. Probably on an 8 level with a touch of 7. Using a gold tone.

Once you have your existing colour softened and tones added plus the toner. Moving forward I would suggest an extended regrowth tint/colour melt for your next appointment. Essentially, a normal regrowth but with some of the root colour blended and balayaged through and then re toned. This stops the harsh block root.
You would highlight and/or balayage the highlights through every other time.

I work with and know loreal colour. I would suggest asking for gold (. 3) or toffee (. 23) or sandy/beige (. 13) tones to be used. You want warm to nuetral blondes.

As for colours I'd ask what you tend to wear in regards to clothes and make up? Do you go for warm or cool colours? What colour are your eyes? What blush do you use?

JMAngel1 · 15/10/2021 06:28

@Littlemiss74. You should ask @Funkypickle where she works - you might be in the same area - you would be in safe hands.

Doidontimmm · 15/10/2021 10:33

I want to book @Funkypickle too!

JMAngel1 · 15/10/2021 10:35

Where are you based @Funkypickle if you don’t mind saying.

allsorts1 · 15/10/2021 10:37

I ask for "baby lights" very narrow highlights combined with some balayage sections - this stops the chunky sploge look,

allsorts1 · 15/10/2021 10:39

Also use the fudge violet shampoo one a week to keep brassiness at bay. It's the best one I've found
