Interview dress

Need some advice regarding what to wear to an interview, which is unfortunately tomorrow. I have a smart, knee length, black, shift-style dress, mid length sleeves, round neck. Can I wear that without.a jacket? Would accessorise with a colourful necklace and tights/heels. It is for a support position at a city law firm. I cannot find my blazer style jacket anywhere after working from home for so long …. Hoping I could get away without one as I have left it too late to go and purchase anything. What do you think?

That sounds fine to me. If you had a smart cardigan, that could work too.

PurpleDaisies · 11/10/2021 16:57

I should have said, good luck with the interview!

UniBallEye · 11/10/2021 17:22

Sounds perfect. Wear clean, well looked after shoes that you can walk comfortably in, with decent tights and good jewellery.

Best of luck with the interview!!

Jumpingintochristmas · 11/10/2021 17:25

Absolutely, good luck!

Thank you all! I feel really out of practice with the whole interviewing process, as I have been lucky enough to be in my current role for a long while now. Really appreciate your help!

Given it’s a City firm, I’d personally ditch the bright tights, but otherwise sounds absolutely fine. I’m just travelling home from a day at a City firm and everyone is a lot less formal than pre-pandemic, so no blazer wouldn’t be out place at all.

A word of warning though, if the dress is sleeveless I’d definitely wear a smart cardigan- it was flipping freezing today!

JacketPotatoQueen · 11/10/2021 18:17

Brilliant - thanks - no, I just meant a colourful necklace to break up the black - would just wear normal tights!

I’d ditch th colourful beads. And colourful tights if that’s what you’re planning

Do you not have a coat,it’s not that warm to go out I just a dress

JacketPotatoQueen · 11/10/2021 18:25

Yep, have a smart coat which I will eat over the top. Thank you!

Your outfit sounds fine. Regarding the colourful necklace I would probably google the company and see are their any photos online. A plain gold or silver necklace might be better but hopefully pictures will give an idea.

Shirleyphallus · 11/10/2021 18:49

Honestly it makes zero difference if the OP wears a beaded / colourful / silver necklace. It sounds absolutely fine OP, good luck!

purplecorkheart · 11/10/2021 19:59

Sadly it does. In my first job my head of department was on our interview board. I happened to have lunch with him and another person who was on a interview panel. My boss judged people who had more than one ring other than wedding and engagement ring, wore non collar blouses/tops under suits. Other person judged anything that did not "fit the office culture". Men with what they judged with long hair or "designer stubble was another no in their books". So glad to be gone from that industry.

I think that things have moved on a lot since then. I work in a similar industry to OP’s interview and no one would care on the style of necklace it is.

Unless it’s one that has letters spelling out “I’m an unemployable gobshite” they really won’t care

JumperandJacket · 11/10/2021 20:19

Is it this one, OP? Grin

The dress sounds perfect, a colourful necklace or scarf is fine (I'm a lawyer from a city firm).

Ha ha, best not wear my unemployable gobshite necklace tomorrow then!
Thanks so much everyone, I really do appreciate it. I had a look at the firm’s website as I thought that was a great idea. Lots of the female partners are wearing dresses with no jackets, and plenty of different types of jewellery. Makes me feel less nervous about wearing something that’s not just plain silver or gold etc. (I was just thinking it livens up the black of the dress to add something with a bit of colour, but it’s not a bead necklace, and not too big or chunky, so I think it will be fine.)
My current firm has moved to a much more casual dress code since covid and hybrid working etc, makes it so hard to know how to present oneself doesn’t it! Am hoping a smart dress will be fine.
