clothes for a skinny adult (potential TW)

Hi all,

My sister is in her early/mid 30s and she is quite underweight. She has been for a long time and she probably will continue to be for a long time.
She has a lucky hybrid professional smart/casual job -- she mostly works from home but does need a smarter wardrobe for occasional evening events, meeting, conferences and the like.
It's been a few years since she's really done any of that stuff (because of covid and other reasons) so the things she used to wear are looking a bit tired/worn out/out of fashion now. Her birthday is coming up and I'd like to get her some new clothes as a present, or maybe vouchers, but the trouble is that it's so hard to find things that fit her!

For example, ASOS size 4s, H&M XS and Sweaty Betty XXS are all too big for her. She would probably fit into some age 11/12 clothing but she also favours an almost exclusively black wardrobe. Any ideas? She's quite a "young" 33 (she works in media/creative with lots of bright young things) so nothing too...ah... frumpy.

I’d have thought H&M kids range would still be quite good - if you filter by size and colour it looks as though there are 290 black items.

My dd is that size and she buys things from SHEIN in aged 12-13, which she is but very slim and 5ft 3

New look kids section is also good as is river island,

Russell19 · 11/10/2021 15:06

Does she normally buy from the kids sections?

SirenSays · 11/10/2021 15:18

I'd try Brandy Melville, H&M kids, Revolve, Forever 21, River Island, Zara

Oh i forgot river island exists! I think she once found a decent wedding (guest) outfit from there, so that's a good shout. Will also have a look at New Look (though i tend to think of New Look as H&M quality at Topshop prices...)

Shein is a definite no.

In terms of what she normally does -- she's lived in yoga pants or skinny jeans and baggy jumpers for yonks. But skinny jeans are out now!

What i'm picturing for her is like a Shiv Roy look but all black sort of capsule wardrobe. So still young/fashionable but not the sort of thing you'd find in the kids section...

What about some of the Japanese brands eg Uniqlo, the XS is fairly Small.
Zara sometimes had smaller sizes available online than in store, eg size 32 jeans.

What is TW? Is that short for Trigger Warning?

ASOS do a size 2 in their petite range, or at least they used to.

waltzingparrot · 11/10/2021 16:40

ASOS and Zalando do size 2

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 11/10/2021 17:27

Can I ask what your budget is - approximately? Also, how many items you are thinking of.
You added a TW to your post, is that because your sil is 'underweight' due to health and not just genetically her current size? I only ask because if it is ED related I wonder if this lovely gift idea might be difficult for her at this point in time.
Absolutely none of my business though so please don't take it the wrong way.

I've occasionally bought children's/teenage size clothes- I don't have an eating disorder but just quite petite. The problem being is they're cut for children so mostly well.. childish and quite unflattering. Also lots of twee logos, glitter and so on.

Based on the fact that your sister has an eating disorder/ body dismorphia (?) and hides in black clothes, I think it's best to get her a voucher. You have lovely intentions but I doubt she'll like what you choose?

A great smart handbag, scarf or accessories might be a safer gift. Good luck Smile
