Maternity Capsule Wardrobe

I’m 9 weeks pregnant and currently looking at planning my maternity wardrobe as a way to distract myself from all the worries that come with early pregnancy.

I won’t buy anything until after the 12 week scan, but was wondering if you could advise on what a good maternity capsule wardrobe should contain?

I WFH most of the time, will have to go into work occasionally but it is pretty casual there. I’d quite like dresses, jumpers and leggings, just don’t know how many of each. Maybe a cardigan too? My normal winter coat is very spacey so I think that will last me through the winter.

I’ll probably end up buying from Seraphine and Isabella Oliver.

Look at ASOS maternity. They have by far the biggest selection.

My 2 best purchases was a pair of Seraphine over the bump jeans - so comfy - and a black jersey maxi which was great for all occasions.

Thanks for the tip! I generally avoid ASOS because of its fast fashion reputation.

Could anyone advise how many of each item I will probably need to put together a capsule wardrobe?

Seraphine do a sort of basic bump kit which has maternity leggings and camisole, simple plain stretchy dress, etc which I used a lot last pregnancy.

My default was basically rotation of a few soft stretchy maternity dresses over black leggings. I wore my normal leather jacket open over them. I felt this covered most bases for work and play. H&M are good for maternity wear.

Hi, I'm currently 29 weeks into my second pregnancy and have done a capsule both times. I work full time in an office.
My first DC was due in August and this time round I'm due in December, so I'm no longer wearing the summery items and have had to add a few bits for autumn, but the core pieces I've had are:

  • 1 x Leggings (mine are Seraphine)
  • 1 x Blue jeans (first time round I had under-bump skinnies from Topshop which were SO uncomfortable, I've now got some H&M overbump straight leg ones which are the comfiest thing ever!)
  • 3 x loose t-shirts (3 pack from asos in white, grey and black, great staples)
  • 2 x fitted t-shirts (coral and breton stripe from H&M)
  • 2 x jersey tank dresses (one is Seraphine and one is Isabella Oliver, both so useful)
  • Blue and white stripe blouse from H&M

I really didn't want to spend much on clothes I wouldn't wear for long, so it is a properly small capsule and I just do laundry frequently. I do have other bits that help to make outfits, and still wear some non maternity stuff like oversized dresses and open cardigans. You can see it all on my pinterest board here:

Don't forget to look on eBay, as Seraphine and IO are expensive - most of my stuff from those brands was second hand (not the leggings!) and it's such good quality it still looks great and has done me and my sister 3 pregnancies in total now.

Highly recommend eBay for those brands - a lot of the stuff is barely worn

Facebook marketplace is good too - you can buy bundles of cheap barely-worn maternity clothes

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed!

I’ve persuaded DH that we should share the costs of maternity wear , so I want to make sure that I’m buying things that I actually need and will work together.

You're welcome @KeepingItCool! It's not the height of fashion, but I was making myself a bit anxious in this pregnancy looking at what influencers wear, etc, until I realised that the reason they all squeeze themselves into non-maternity clothes until they give birth is because otherwise they'd have nothing to sell. So I'm embracing the bump space in proper maternity clothes and saving money :)
