Best way to blend in greys

I've got quite a few grey hairs coming through and don't want to dye my hair dark brown anymore, that's my natural colour. Is there a way of blending in the greys? My hair is curly and the grey hairs are very wiry and dull, not shiny. Or would it be better to dye it grey?

I've been a full platinum silver bleached to high heaven for the last few years but got so fed up with it - expense , condition etc

Have a short undercut pixie so the last visit just had some highlights through and 2 toners
A darker grey and a lighter silver
I actually like it
Condition feels better think I'll keep to this till it's 100% silver/ grey whatever

Mascara try that i know so many people who do this x

mrsfollowill · 09/10/2021 23:58

I have caramel hilights in my naturally dark brown hair which is well tinged with greys then a mid brown dye over the rest- is good camouflage and lasts for 4 months ish - have it done 3 times a year. I hate the wiry grey fuckers!! Was my 19th bday when I plucked the first one out - I was gutted :-(

I don't suit short hair. It's about shoulder length at the moment.

I thought about having highlights. I don't want to have to go to the hairdressers too often though, for cost reasons. I usually go once a year for a trim.

I've tried the mascara, but find it very sticky and it makes my sensitive scalp itch.

I've been using semi permanent dye for a few years, but it's not really covering the greys anymore, so last time I used a permanent one, but it was very dark.

That would be easier for you then if your hair is longer , it won't need much upkeep and maybe try one of those root sprays in between?

I'm in the same situation, I would say I am 50% grey, I wish it would just all go so I could just tone the grey to blonde, but it is mostly on top & at the front. I haven't had it coloured or cut for nearly 3 years due to illness & Covid, it is almost waist length.

If you've only got a few greys, dying it all grey (like Sali Hughes) would be a very high maintenance option. You'd essentially have to bleach the colour out before dying it grey thrn you'd have to deal with brown roots.

You said semi permanent isn't covering the greys anymore. Have you tried leaving it on longer? I use Casting and I apply it just the the roots using a brush, then I leave it for 30 to 40 mins. It lasts 3 to 4 weeks. It was my hairdresser who advised me to leave it on for longer.
I've also realised that you can keep and reuse the unmixed, unused dye. So I only mix up half the dye which is more than enough to cover the roots.

I can't use spray on dye, it irritates my scalp. I'll look at the mascara one though.

Yes, I think maybe all grey is too much, I just thought then the grey roots wouldn't show up. I can't really tell how much is grey because it's been dyed on and off for the last four years.

I'll try Casting again and leave it on longer. I struggle to find the right colour. My hair is dark brown, but the dark brown dye is too dark and I suspect the medium won't cover it at all.

I use clairol root touch up. It’s very easy to do and lasts a few weeks

ImperfectTents · 12/10/2021 09:53

The only good way I found was highlights and colour at salon and top up the roots at home. V expensive and time consuming and always worrying about my roots. If you aren’t v grey, highlights alone might work but ultimately there is no easy way. I am silver now. The upkeep and worry just took up too much headspace

I'm sick of dying my hair and like you, find the spray dyes make my scalp feel gritty and itchy.

I'm mid brown with about 30% grey coming through at my part and an almost completely grey streak at the front. Next trip to the hairdresser I'm going to go with a couple of different colours of highlights - a caramel and an ashy/pearl blonde - hoping it'll blend everything well.

Can you put in highlights of the "colours" coming through, and just grow the lot out?
The first few greys that came through mine were very obvious, but now there are more, the whole lot just blends into one mass of tones, and actually stands out less than when it was odd strands.

WhereAreWeNow · 12/10/2021 10:22

@Mrsbrownsbuoys definitely go for a lighter shade. Another tip I was given is the simple colours (eg. Casting colours where the number is 500 or 600 rather than 514 or something) cover grey better. So if I were you, I'd try Casting medium brown, apply just to the roots and leave for 30 or 40 mins and see if you get a better result.
Applying just to the roots is really important to avoid build up of colour which can make hair colour look very flat and darker at the ends. It also minimises damage.

'If you've only got a few greys, dying it all grey (like Sali Hughes) would be a very high maintenance option'

Definitely don't do this. It looks awful and the maintenance is a nightmare apparently

OP, I'm very similar to you. Got sick to death of colouring it all dark brown. I now have lots of fine blond foils through the front and sides, and the top and back is my natural brown with some greys coming through. I have it done every 8 weeks. Roots blend in SO much better than when it was all dark!

I thought about doing this. I can't really afford to have it done that often though.

I'll try that. Ive been dyeing it all over because I didn't want to end up with a block of hair growing a different colour but I guess if it's not permanent it'll just wash out eventually. Do you think Castings is better than Nice n Easy?

OP posts:
WhereAreWeNow · 12/10/2021 14:07

@Mrsbrownsbuoys definitely just do roots. It will blend in if you're using the same shade. I slightly prefer Casting but I think Nice n Easy is good too. It's just personal choice. I also like the Natural Instincts ones which I think have less irritating ingredients which might suit you.
