Outdated makeup look, what's current?

I saw a photo of myself yesterday and noticed that my makeup looks outdated. I then realised I don't actually know what is a current/modern look.

Can anyone advise or even recommend some Youtube or Instagram channels to follow to get some ideas? I think I've got stuck around 2005/6 as far as my own look is concerned!

I'm in my late 50s, have okay skin for my age, ie very few wrinkles but do have quite a bit of redness and still have an oily t zone.

I like Alexandra Anele. She doesn’t do ‘current trends’ as such but is really clever and analytical about how make up changes your face. Her ‘Dude’ playlist is good. m.youtube.com/watch?v=BdcRNqQkNbg

That blusher placement is amazing - I've been doing the apples for years! I'm going out tonight so will try it.

As I’ve got older I’ve found that full coverage foundation no longer suits me. I’m 40 and have good skin with few wrinkles really but I find a heavy base and heavy eye makeup really ages me. I now wear a much lighter base and go for a more glowy look using mainly cream based products. I think it looks fresher and younger. I’ve been following Ruth Crilly on Insta who’s about the same age as me and this is how she tends to do her makeup too. I personally think this looks more modern.

I think that's a good point Chocolate, I need to look for a lighter base. I'll have to try to find something that doesn't make my nose even shinier though.

I think 2000s are having a bit of a revival now!

I can't bear to wear foundation but if I'm making an affort, I use Nanoblur which mattifies and smooths my skin. It's like a facelift in a tube Smile

Thanks, I'm going to try this too!

I think the dewy, natural look is a good one for being both classic and current. The key for me has been switching to a tinted serum (the Bobby brown one) applied lightly with a foundation brush. I also have oily t zone but find a light setting powder stops the shine.

That really was amazing! I had no idea it would make such a difference.

A lighter fresher look is what I go for.

I don’t use powder. I use a very lightweight foundation or cc cream. Anything heavy really ages me. Even my bronzer is a cream.

ChocolateRiver · 09/10/2021 17:55

I agree, Bobbi Brown is great for a light base. I sometimes use their skin foundation stick VERY sparingly but I mainly use Clinique BBGel.

I'm old as dirt, but my skin ins much younger. I use a range called erborian. The CC Dull Correct cream is fantastic for evening out the skin tone and making me glow - God knows what's in it, but at my age I don't care. It's none too cheap though.

Primers are your friend OP - for face, eyelids and lips - I mix up my makeup tbh rather than stick to one set of colours/shades - so I guess I do still wear what I did 20yrs ago - but then, it suits me and I've got better at applying it/wearing it now so I'm happy with that. Trends have a habit of hurting your pocket ime.

I've used Ali Andreea videos on YouTube to redo my make-up look, my kids were really impressed and said I'd had a 'glow up' (which is a good thing in teen speak). I bought a few new products but not too many. Probably £50 worth? I mean that's not cheap but would you want to look better every day for £50...compared with fillers/Botox/more invasive things, I felt it was a bargain!

Lots of great suggestions here, thank everyone.

I tried the blusher placement last night and it looked great, really gave me a lift.

See, I tried it too and it didn't really suit me. It made my already quite long, thin face longer and thinner.
