Please help me find a nice coat for the extreme cold!

I am going somewhere very, very cold and in spite of a fuckton of endless googling and scrolling I cannot find a nice coat that actually works for extreme weather conditions but that also won't make me look like Ms Trunchbull 😖 I would really like a long nude puffa parka but such things only seem to exist in flimsy decorative material. Please help!

Will you be getting wet (or snowy or rainy conditions)

For light showers - rab deep cover Parka

For wet condition- rab valiance parka

I want either of these but the website I looked at doesn't specify the temp they go down too.

My current warm coat is a fat-face down one I got in the sale and was fine for -23 in Russia. It's also waterproof. Have look on eBay or vinted.

I wouldn't get the esprit one as doesn't look technical enough

Agree with a heavy moisturiser - my face and legs were horrendous from the cold.

ImInStealthMode · 10/10/2021 11:28

This one? Although personally I prefer it in the darker colours

My Superdry coat is the snuggliest I've ever owned.

I wouldn't pick that Esprit coat for spending time outdoors here no, it might be bearable for a city break where you're just going from hotel to car to shops/bars etc. but it doesn't look warm enough, there's no down fill rating on it. It's a fashion coat and also won't work if/when it's sleeting or snowing, it's not waterproof or even water resistant and it's too long to put a waterproof over it. Wet down coats are useless. You really need something more technical. The climate here is very dry but it snows and sleets a lot throughout the winter. Definitely also agree re. the moisturiser and heavy duty hand cream and lip balm. The altitude and dry air even in Calgary let alone over in the mountains take a bit of getting used to - my first few months here I was constantly thirsty and the cold was shocking even though I was expecting and prepared for it.

Just a quick question when are you going ? Sorry to be nosey!!! We should have been going for Xmas. BRITISH AIRWAYS sent an email about entering Canada due to covid.

Sooverthemill · 11/10/2021 17:59

I would ask someone in Canada! Lots of Canadian Instagram people eg karinemily who would answer questions I'm sure, when I worked with a Canadian woman she would have her mum meet her at the airport with all her cold weather gear as it was totally unsuitable for the UK version of cold.

Thanks for all your advice, I think I needed someone to tell me that I have to be practical rather than prioritise what I think looks nice!

I've been looking on eBay but I don't trust that some of the second hand coats are genuine. Fakes are so hard to spot (until it's too late and I'm freezing on a glacier tour 🥶)

@Sooverthemill both @VetOnCall and I live in Alberta, Canada.

lordofthethighs · 12/10/2021 07:29

@MooseBeTimeForSummer @VetOnCall so do you think I'll just need warm, dry comfy clothes if I'm doing a few outdoor activities and going out for tea a few times? If I went out for tea would I be fine to do this in the same sort of clothes I would plan to wear for the daytime stuff?

VetOnCall · 12/10/2021 23:05

Yeah, warm, practical clothes are definitely the way to go here. We go to the mountains all the time hiking or snowshoeing and skiing in winter, and then often stop for dinner in Banff or Canmore. I'll take off waterproofs etc. but basically I'm in the clothes I've been wearing all day. Obviously there are fancy places but it's overwhelmingly very casual here. You need to dress so you don't freeze or go arse over tit on the way there 😄

If you're in Banff make sure you have breakfast at Tooloulou's and a burger at The Eddie Burger Bar! If in Calgary and you like ice cream hit up Made by Marcus on 7th Avenue.

Yes we cross posted. My sister used to live in Canada and my nephew is now in kasha which seemed to be quite chilly too

Sooverthemill · 13/10/2021 10:28

@lordofthethighs I sell on eBay and for expensive things I always include a photo of the receipt ( redacted). You can ask the seller. Vestiaire authenticate
