What do you wear if jumpers etc irritate you & you get hot easily but don’t want to be cold?!

I’m finally getting ruthless & going through my wardrobe & getting rid/trying to sell all my jumpers/cardigans that make me itch and feel like I’m burning up!

I love the look of big chunky knitwear & long cosy cardigans but I have to admit defeat, I just cannot wear them and I need to stop buying them hoping this time it will be different.

If anyone else is the same what do you wear instead to keep warm in winter but not boil and also that looks reasonably stylish? Any examples would be great thank you.

Thin sweatshirts and thin non-irritating jumpers

Swearwolf · 08/10/2021 14:30

Could you put thermals under normal dresses etc? You can get some really nice ones now. I'm also a fan of thick tights, big socks and boots, and I always feel warmer when my feet are cosy.

Declutterclogs · 08/10/2021 14:35

What is your knitwear made of? Eg I get hot and itchy in acrylic knits but can wear merino wool. My DD is the opposite - wool of any kind makes her itch like crazy but she's good with acrylic.

If you can't wear either of them, then yes lots of cotton or bamboo layers (bamboo jersey is soft, warm and non-sweaty, it's lovely) and then cotton sweatshirts and/or gilet. A light down puffy jacket or gilet is great for layering too without being heavy

rrhuth · 08/10/2021 14:40

I wear lots of thin layers so I can adjust as necessary

Bagelsandbrie · 08/10/2021 14:43

Thin sweatshirts and thin soft jumpers from primark / Sainsbury’s with layers underneath so I can peel them off as necessary.

Gizmo98765 · 08/10/2021 14:46

I am usually too hot as menopausal and also have very dry itchy skin. I prefer to be on the cold side rather than be too hot.
I can’t wear jumpers at all as I itch too much. I tend to stick to natural fibres and lots of layers that I can whip off and whip on again easily.

TillyDevon · 08/10/2021 14:46

I like those light gillet things from Uniqlo. They keep your core warm but no bulk or itch and also have pickets!

TillyDevon · 08/10/2021 14:47

Meant pockets

Sgtmajormummy · 08/10/2021 14:53

A cotton camisole and socks.
Following the high fashion trend this year I’m thinking of making a patchwork quilt/kimono style jacket and depending on how successful it is, that will be my extra layer at home or for show!

Agree with PP about the thin Uniqlo body warmer waistcoats.

Nothing high on the neck Angry (that's hot, not angry). If I'm in a cool enough environment I might wear v-neck or low round neck fine knit tops. If warm then it has to be very thin or t-shirt fabric.

For casual I wear an open shirt over a t-shirt with jeans. Not very stylish but the most comfortable combination.

I do have one loose-knit but fairly cosy cardigan which I can wear over a t-shirt in a cool environment.

CatNamedEaster · 08/10/2021 15:00

I've got a kind of poncho/cardigan type thing. It's perfect for me because it has dropped shoulders rather than sleeves, the armhole is cut really low so nowhere near the armpits and it can be unbuttoned as low or high on the neck as I want.

It's about 10 years old though so doesn't really help you to find one now.Grin

Sprig1 · 08/10/2021 15:08

A filet, with something light underneath, I am not sure that counts as stylish though.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 08/10/2021 17:08

Cardigans. I even sometimes wear a big chunky cardigan on top of a thin fitted one!

Bananaman123 · 08/10/2021 18:55

I tend to wear sleeveless blouses and lighter cardi, primark ones are good but I wouldn't do too chunky

Boood · 08/10/2021 19:50

I keep an eye out for cotton knitwear. It’s not always easy to find but it’s plenty warm enough when you can get it.

Toomanyradishes · 08/10/2021 21:06

Bamboo jersey as suggested or silk jersey although thats a lot pricier. Personally i would avoid thermals/baselayers under tops and dresses etc as its a lot harder to whip off an extra layer, i would just find the lightest silkiest cardigans to put on. Also blazers can be lighter than jumpers and look smart

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/10/2021 21:11

I can’t wear wool, acrylic, polyester jumpers or any hair fibres next to my skin.

I either wear cotton shirts/blouses with cardi or jumper over the top, or cotton sweatshirts. Fleece makes me itch.

Silk is the best. It’s warm and hypoallergenic but not cheap. I can only tolerate silk and cotton next to my skin😔

TheShades · 08/10/2021 21:25

I also struggle with jumpers being too hot and/or itchy but other tops not being warm enough. I'm currently wearing this and it's just right, really soft and cosy. They do other designs but just check the material as this is 100% cotton but not all of them are.

Fleece isn't as irritating as wool

WaterScarf · 08/10/2021 22:17

I'm the same OP so wear cotton jumpers or ones made of sweatshirt material. Tbh my coats are very warm so I can just wear normal clothes underneath without the need for jumpers.

FlatteredFool · 09/10/2021 09:59

Same here. I have some lovely jumpers but they are so scritchy and hot and I have sensory issues. Also acrylic arms polyester gives me stinky pits. I'd like to try cashmere but my budget isn't compatible with it. I'm thinking of long cardigans right swan around in with a loose vest top that can be worn on its own if necessary. Only in the house though.

honeylemonteaforme · 09/10/2021 10:04

Cotton jumpers
Big v necks

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/10/2021 10:59

Fleece is made from strands of plastic. I can’t wear it, it prickles my arms.

I bloody wish l could wear a cashmere or wool jumper. Can’t even wear bloody hat, gloves or socks made from them. I knit my own silk gloves😔

Fferny1 · 09/10/2021 11:08

I wear cashmere ponchos over a linen t shirt. If I'm too hot I can then stick my arms out to cool down.
Also oversized cashmere v neck jumpers so they're loose & airy.
I do love Brora thermals when it becomes really cold. I have some tops/vests that are several years old ( so expensive now). Although they're synthetic marerials they are soft, comfortable and airy.
