How to repair my fxd up dyed hair?

irridium · 04/10/2021 22:11

It's naturally black but I wanted to cover my whitey white hairs, and stupidly I used too many box dyes and a bodged up bleach salon dye and now its so fxd it feels like a worn out 70s shag pile.I've tried to find decent conditioners and used Philip Kingsley Elasticiser Deep Conditioning Treatment, but nothing has worked.

How would be able to bring this back to its former shiny, soft glory without to resorting it to be shaved off and wait for the natural growth to come through. The texture is totally coarse and heavy and I'm so desperate.

So glad the weather's turned so that I can wear my woolly hat all the time!

Olaplex treatment in salon

bubblesr · 04/10/2021 22:14

Same thing happened after I dyed my hair, it felt really dry and like straw. I used a protein treatment and it’s back to its soft shiny self

@honeybuns007 @bubblesr thanks for responding so quick.

Is the Olaplex an ongoing treatment; or can I do this at home? I'd like to save my pennies wherever I could.

What kind of protein products do you recommend?

You can get an in salon olaplex treatment then follow it up with olaplex no 3 at home. I alternate between olaplex and Philip Kingsley on my bleached hair.

I used curl smith protein but my hair is curly and thick, it’s quite pricey at £23 but you dont use a lot and I only do it every 6-8 weeks. I’m not sure about olaplex

irridium · 04/10/2021 22:29

@MilduraS would you buy the full set, shampoo and conditioner? How effective has it been for you in terms of it being soft and silky? My hair is thick and has really bad texture so I'm not sure if it's going to straighten out the bumpy bits in each hair strand.

You find a conditioner/ mask that works for your hair type, no-one can tell you which one without photos of your hair before and now but a description will help, is it curly, fine, long, short, greasy, dry, etc? You say coarse but is this new after dying?
Don't use heat wherever possible or rub dry ever.
Use a hair mask and leave on with a bag on your head and a hood up for an hour or so every week if possible, squeeze as much water from the hair as possible before (but don't squeeze and pull your hand through the length!) don't let the ends dry out and condition root to tip when you do this.
Don't brush through until it's dry if you can help it (will depend on your hair type!)
If you box dye use an intense conditioner root to tip after and leave on for ages with the bag/ hood as above. It will be greasy after but leave as long as possible before first wash after dying, use lukewarm water for help with damage, as cold as possible for last rinse and longevity of colour.
It doesn't really work for black but you can use a vegetable dye to top up inbetween box dyes. Black will tend to go a purple/ blue on grey roots but if you're not naturally very dark you can use on the ends if they lighten quicker, you might want to find the best black for your level of grey/ black fading.
Tresemme purple mask is as good as a lot of the way more expensive ones imo, the Palmers protein pack individual masks are fantastic too, but neither should be used too often. Too much keratin or protein is just as bad for hair as too little!

I bought an olive oil leave in conditioner by palmers i think. Spay it onto your hair and comb it through. It feels like silk! It's about £6 from tesco. It might not be permanent but it's a great treatment.

Thanks for your replies, peeps!

Yes, it has been frazzled by the straighteners twice and I've treated my hair very badly when I couldn't work out how to set the temp. on them so they went to the max at 230C (shame on me). The last time I went to a proper salon for a dye and they managed to make it look amazing with the curls, but somehow, I can't curl mine without it looking so dry and fxd, and badly curled.

I use a steam room at the gym and put the Phillip Kingsley treatment on but it isn't that effective on me; I'd say about 50% better. The day after, it resorts to being dry and heavy again.

My hair is naturally thick but is thinning due to my menopause.

I've only bought the no3 and my hairdresser uses the in salon treatment. It's more of a treatment for damaged hair to stop breaking. I use elasticizer for moisture/softness and olaplex for repair. The olaplex blurb tries to say it's not a conditioning treatment but I do find my hair much smoother and my highlights are brighter after using it.

Tippytaps · 04/10/2021 22:59

Olaplex has sorted my dry damaged hair out. It was heavily bleached and like straw like. I do it at home with the oil then the mask (0 + 3).

Winecurestiredness · 04/10/2021 23:02

I have frazzled bleached hair and find that a combination of coconut oil and a keratin mask overnight works wonders
