Hair and moisturiser problem. What is the answer, please?

First world problem, I know that, but I've never found the solution to this.

My hair is type 1A or 1B, it is long. The trouble is that if I leave it to air dry, even in temperatures like this, it takes hours.

I did exactly this today, timed it approximately and it took 3 hours to dry. My hair has always been like this, I don't know why it holds onto water so much.

Also, especially as the weather gets colder I like to wear a thick moisturiser.

How do I have a) dry hair that doesn't b) stick to my face and get greasy after I have moisturised?

If I blow dry my hair, then put it in a grip and moisturise, blot moisturiser and let my hair down I've invariably got an unfortunate kink in my otherwise straight hair & it still sticks to my moisturiser.

Or I moisturise and blot first, then blow dry and my hair sticks to my face anyway and I get oily streaks in my nice blow dry.

Has anyone ever found the answer to this, please?

Use a loose headscarf to tie it back (wet or dry) until your face is dry.

RedSparklesGreenSparkles · 04/10/2021 22:08

My face is never quite 'dry' as it is moisturiser, not foundation.

Change your moisturiser. Your face shouldn't be greasy all day, and your hair touching your face shouldn't make your hair greasy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/10/2021 22:13

That all sounds so complicated, can't you just use less moisturiser in the day and more at night?

If I wash my hair first thing, it's still damp mid afternoon, it really holds the water like yours.

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2021 22:20

I have pretty dry skin so I do moisturise, but it tends to sink in after at least a few minutes, you shouldn't need to blot it. I think if you're blotting it's not actually going in, it's all coming off on the tissue! What are you using for a moisturiser? Maybe it's too heavy for your skin or you are using way too much, have you tried using half your usual amount? Or maybe a gel formulation?

Basically my hair is like yours, stays wet for quite some time and I have lots of wispy flyaways but my moisturiser and sunscreen is always long sunk in before my hair is dry - I just comb it back wet and straight while I do my face and it is completely matte to the touch before my hair is dry.

I use really big, loose silk scrunchies to keep my hair out of the way. They don't leave kinks the way grips do.

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 04/10/2021 23:02

Use a lighter moisturiser. Take Imedeen. Sorted.

RedSparklesGreenSparkles · 04/10/2021 23:08

Scrunchies are a good idea. Indoors.

As I'm old I remember scrunchies the first time around and I have a personal theory that if I wore it the first time around, I don't wear it on the next go! Except for timeless classics like DMs etc. Grin

It's only a personal rule, I don't judge anyone else for their clothing choices.

At this time of year I wear this as I have dry skin and it is good stuff.

Can't take Imedeen, I'm allergic to fish and it contains marine collagen.

@Xiaoxiong which moisturiser do you use, please?

Kerikerikeri · 04/10/2021 23:16

I would switch your moisturiser to something that sinks in to the skin.

If you have dry or dehydrated skin it might be worthwhile adding in some more hydrating products - make sure your cleanser is hydrating too.

I like to use mists in between products - I tend to go for ones that contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

Kerikerikeri · 04/10/2021 23:17

I have the moisturiser that you use and agree it is very wet and sticky. I’ve only used it a couple of times and was put off my it for that reason. How are you managing to add SPF in top?

RedSparklesGreenSparkles · 04/10/2021 23:38

If I add SPF on top of a light moisturiser I find that has the same effect as a heavier moisturiser including SPF.

Do you have any tips for SPF? Although at this point I feel like I have tried everything.

Try the CeraVe in the pump bottle, it's a bit lighter.

Thatsplentyjack · 05/10/2021 06:59

Have you tried a light covering of translucent powder?

Xiaoxiong · 05/10/2021 07:04

I use Pixi phenomenal gel, Dermalex rosacea barrier repair, Biore watery gel sunscreen and sometimes (mainly on cold windy sunny days in winter) a very very thin layer of Vaseline or emollient from the dermatologist on my cheeks and forehead because they get so dry! For makeup I wear tinted 1% hyuralonic acid serum, and I try and drink 2L of water to hydrate from the inside as well.

I find the key with the sticky things like Vaseline is to apply tiny amounts in layers so it sinks in. If it's sticky it's sitting on top, so just try using a bit less and see if it helps for now!

BusterGonad · 05/10/2021 07:08

I agree that the moisturiser is the problem. If your skin is dry try Nuxe facial balm. I use it, it's really rich but I don't have an issue with my hair sticking to my face, and I let it dry naturally too.

Noogar · 05/10/2021 08:35

Yeah switch the moisturiser it shouldn't be making you sticky

RedSparklesGreenSparkles · 05/10/2021 08:39

@BusterGonad it was the Nuxe that I used yesterday, I'm not kidding, I had a sample which I haven't finished and it was that moisturiser which prompted me to ask the question in the first place!

Setting powder?

Kerikerikeri · 05/10/2021 09:27

SPF wise - I love Ultra Sun. I using the tinted one at the moment which is just brilliant.

I also love Altruist face fluid.

I apply moisturiser before - allow to dry for as long as possible. I aim for 10 minutes minimum but more is better. Then apply SPF.

My face is never ever sticky.

Moisturiser wise - maybe try for a heavier one in the evening and a lighter one for daytime wear.

I go between a few moisturisers - I like The Ordinary NMF. Just a small amount goes a long way. And I also use Face Theory moisturisers too. Again a little goes a long way.

In between my serums I use hydrating mists - Pixi milk my mist or Dr Jart Ceramidin are working well for me just now.

Kerikerikeri · 05/10/2021 09:28

You could also add an oil in the evening

RedSparklesGreenSparkles · 05/10/2021 10:16

Should you use setting powder on an SPF?
I have some, I've just never been sure.

In the interests of bringing some positivity, I have found both Kate Somerville Moisturizing Milk and Caudalie Vinosource to be good and sink in.

Trouble is that neither contain SPF. I add in an SPF and it all gets oily/sticky.

To flip my original question:
Can anyone recommend a good gel moisturiser with SPF?

Are any of these any good?

You are better with a separate SPF. Neither of the two I recommended are sticky at all

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 05/10/2021 14:14

Avene recovery cream is a very rich moisturiser and I don’t find it sticky at all.
