Shampoo bars and other stuff

I recently tried shampoo bars after a growing concern about single use plastic. They suit my hair better than the liquid shampoo which is good.

I was in Boots the other week waiting in the queue thinking about how much plastic was actually just on the selves in there.

Anyway. I already use bar soap over shower gel and have been for years as never keen on the shower gel. Of course if I am given some as a gift I will use it.

I also use the bag refill hand wash and we just reuse the bottles we had months ago with a different make in.

I saw an ad on refillable deodorant sticks but they are out of my budget.

Thinking about what else I could replace. Any suggestions?

@RoseMartha the toilet paper is fine. Like you I have a teenage daughter who goes through reams of the stuff... You buy it in bulk and its cheaper per roll than supermarket recycled paper.

Beebumble2 · 06/10/2021 21:23

Apart from the many ideas above, we use a Bamboo and wood dish scrubber, bought from Waitrose.
Every little bit helps, as said by a different supermarket 😂.

Just interested in your use of Method cleaning products. Is that because you regard it as being environmentally friendly? Is it because of the packaging or contents? Both Ecover and Method are owned by parent company SC Johnson.

I must admit, I'm disappointed when I find a brand that seems to be eco friendly and importantly cruelty free; only to then find they are owned by a parent company that carries out or allows animal testing to be carried where required. I sometimes engage in a little bit of cognitive dissonance to think 'but at least the products I bought are ethical'. I don't know what the answer is.

Oh I wanted to love shampoo bars but the ones I tried too sooooooo long to get all lartherd up enough to actually get enough to wash hair I ended up using 3 or 4 times more water as much as normal... Anyone have any good lathering brands?

We got a an old school soda stream and stopped buying fizzy drinks in plastic bottles and cans.

Done other bits like stopped buying disposal razer's, and not a consumable exactly but replaced using my little 2000watt electric heater to hear my cold office room and replaced with a very cheap to run electric blanket so saving a lot of power usage by doing that.

I stopped shaving Grin

Indecisivelurcher · 06/10/2021 21:50

@MsMeNz little blue hen.

RoseMartha · 06/10/2021 22:05

@Indecisivelurcher
Sounds a nice shampoo. Ok will see if I can find some toothbrush heads as that would be better to plastic ones.

Gosh I hadnt though that far re energy supplier but worth thinking about. Ty

@LittleWingSoul I will look into this then.
Thank you.

Thank you @Beebumble2 I did buy some coconut scourers. Which must be similar.

@Cailleach1 because I felt it was more environmentally friendly than Flash etc. They last longer as well. Thats not to say I would not change and use Smol or similar as another poster suggested.

Has anyone found a good shampoo bar for coloured hair? I can't remember the one I have tried (it was a mail order one) but it really stripped the dye from my hair so I haven't used one since

RoseMartha · 06/10/2021 22:30

@ACatCalledPuss i haven't found the ones I have used take the colour out my hair.

I buy shampoo and shower bars from this company.

The lavender and geranium shampoo bar doesn't strip the colour from my hair (but it does sting like fury if it gets in your eyes)

I would just like to give another recommendation for Who Gives A Crap loo paper. It's great. Pretty much identical to Sainsbury's recycled loo paper only more convenient. I get kitchen roll too.

Also, I would like to give a shout out to Splosh - you buy a bottle of eg washing up liquid or fabric conditioner or whatever and then get refills. Loads less plastic in the system and I would say it is all good quality.

Hope this is helpful!

RoseMartha · 07/10/2021 00:18

Yes ty @RaoulDufysCat it is

Ok ty. Will look into this.

@LittleWingSoul what is that toilet paper like, my girls use loads especially on their periods we can get through a roll a day. I dont think they will go for period or the cup though as a couple of people suggested.

@PlanDeRaccordement will look into these. Ty.

@GemmaRuby I have bought a few of these to try. Ty

Cant change toothbrush as I use an electric one (it is 4 years old though and obviously I change the heads). and can only use one type of toothpaste due to dental issues.

Does anyone know if bamboo dental brushes are available?

Also I have a broken saucepan. I dont want to just bin. I emailed a metal recycling place but my email bounced back. It is still sitting by my fruit bowl.

@bluejelly and @NoYOUbekind
How well do they clean.

I have been using Method cleaning stuff and get it when its on offer.

I'm really pleased with them. Just as good as Method in my opinion
