Cut my own hair?

Good idea, or terrible? I don't have much money, and going to the hairdresser is an ordeal rather than a treat for me. I don't want anything fancy, just a chin length cut rather than the middle of the back hurts like hell when I brush it length that I've got. Any thoughts, please?

I cut my own hair for years but only shoulder length. Chin length would be tricky to do the back. There's probably a YouTube video though...

Yeah go for it. Unless your hair is dead straight it should be fine

MoltonSilver · 30/09/2021 08:02

Nooooo. Don't do it.

FreshFaceTime · 30/09/2021 08:07

I've done mine quite a bit. Go longer than you think you want so you have some room for error/tidying up if needed. You can always go a bit shorter next time. Find YouTube tutorials and pick a technique you think you can follow (there are a few different ones - the one I use now is different to the one I tried the first time). When you've done it once it feels less scary again and again, But... I did find that after a while (couple of years maybe?) I craved a proper cut from a hairdresser. Probably depends on your hair and personal preference. I felt like mine got more uneven over time so eventually just needed a proper chop. Also don't be tempted to use kitchen scissors. Get proper hair dressing ones. I got cheap ones off amazon/ebay.

Bluntness100 · 30/09/2021 08:08

Do you have anyone who could do it for you?

NameChangedForAChange · 30/09/2021 08:16

I used to do it and it was ok. Sharp scissors and a couple of mirrors. Take your time. Don’t go too short at first in case it’s uneven and you need to level it up.

HotSauceCommittee · 30/09/2021 08:18

Maybe order some thinning scissors online first for the back and see how you get on?

BobGalaxy · 30/09/2021 08:22

Could a mobile hairdresser come to you or you go to their home? I did that recently and it was much more relaxing and cheaper than a salon.

Beeinalily · 30/09/2021 08:24

Thank you all for your replies. Consensus seems to be to go for a bit longer, I think that's probably sensible. @MoltonSilver are you a salon owner? 😆

Especially thank you to @FreshFaceTime for your detailed reply. @BobGalaxy I haven't heard of one here, I'm in a tiny village.

I cut my own hair all the time because I hate going to the hairdresser.

The best way I’ve found to get a straight cut is to section my hair in half with a part straight down the back of the head. Then section each half into half again, making a part just behind the ear. Tie a bobble round each section (so 4 in all), then pull the bobble down to where you want to cut. I agree with other posters with going slightly longer than you think you want it. Make sure each bobble is at the same length on the hair, then cut just below the bobble straight across. I then cut upwards into the hair to get rid of the blunt ends. Take the bobbles out and tidy up any stray bits.

It takes me about 20 mins to do it that way and ends up looking pretty straight. There are loads of you tube tutorial videos so you could watch a few and pick a method you think would be best. Brad Mondo is a hairdresser who has a few you tube videos, his method is the one I use posted above.

@Bluntness100 not really, I have an adult son on the autistic spectrum but he's likely to notice a shiny thing and wander off half way through!

@MalfunctioningRobot thank you, I'll certainly try that technique.

I have long hair with a fringe. I cut the fringe and the length with occasionally putting in layers which I always regret and then grow out again.

As I’ve got older my hair has got very thick and grows very quickly especially during the spring and summer so I want my hair to be easy to regularly trim.

I find it easy to cut my own hair but hard to style it so that’s why I keep it long as short hair looks awful on me and is far too fiddly to style and cut.

purplesequins · 30/09/2021 08:44

it takes practice!
some instructions are easier to follow than others and some of the results on youtube or similar a very ...edited.

I cut my own hair, but it's long and slightly wavy - very forgiving.
I wouldn't attempt shorter than shoulder length unless hats or scarves would suit me
