How to make curls hold from heated rollers?

Big even my coming up, no hairdressers available and I can not curl my long hair very well with every appliance so I have bought some heated rollers but the curl is not holding. To be fair I haven’t used any product on my hair other than heat protector. What do I need??? Instead of curly all over which I wanted im going to try for more big wavy type curly if that makes sense. What products do I need??

I should add when I’m saying the won’t hold a curl, I take the curler out and it’s curly but dropping straight away although curler only in 20 mins? Also how do you prevent the little marks in your hair from the ridges of the rollers?? I have bought the Remington pro luxe and the babyliss Thermo ceramic lasting volume curls and both the same…

I would use some kind of styling spray or hairspray before winding the curlers - which one depends on the look you want (glossy, beachy, etc).

Are you making sure your hair and the curlers are completely cold before you take them out? From what I remember when I used to use them, that's one of the most important things.

Dontmindasking · 29/09/2021 19:06

I don’t like the beachy stuff in my hair makes it all Matt and knotty. So I guess glossy? I have plenty of hairspray but is that enough? I will definitely leave them in much longer on the night….

Dontmindasking · 29/09/2021 20:03

No I can’t get on with tongs and curling irons, wands, ghds crumpets you name it.

I would use a styling product before and lots of hairspray after. Also make sure your hair is 100% dry and make sure you leave the rollers in for long enough

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/09/2021 20:22

Wash hair, part dry, load it with mousse, dry off until only slightly damp, put in rollers, add half a can of hairspray, leave for hours (preferably overnight). Works on mine but I’d still only get a few hours of curl (I do have very long vet think hair though)

Better is to use old fashioned setting lotion with rags on damp hair and left to dry out overnight

ThePotatoCroquette · 29/09/2021 20:23

Old style rollers or rags and setting lotion is definitely the best way for lasting curls, no doubt about it!

Dontmindasking · 29/09/2021 21:11

Crumpets Grin

Where do you buy setting lotion?? Have lent ever seen that? Thought that was only part of a perm? I don’t find rags any good either, I can’t get them even. Hence why iv resorted. Im sure you aren’t suppose to use the rollers on wet hair? Someone says dry someone says damp… damp for rags yes but I don’t think for rollers?

I love my heated rollers! I find mousse is the best product to use beforehand. As pp said if you want them to last you put them in then let them cool then take the rollers out. Then leave them alone a bit longer before you break up the curl.
The ridge thing is the hardest but I use those springy comb type clips and fiddle about with the angle. On the fringe piece I use two U clips

daisylashes · 29/09/2021 21:15

Oh and yes I mousse then dry hair then rollers (then hairspray if I must)

thefourgp · 29/09/2021 21:18

A lot of products will weigh your hair down. I use them with clean, dry hair with a bit of Elnett hairspray in it before using the heated curlers. When you put them in hold the strand of hair up and away from your head to help give the roots some lift. Leave them in for an hour until they’re totally cool. More hairspray and don’t brush or comb. Use your fingers because they’ll naturally drop and soften.

ThePotatoCroquette · 29/09/2021 21:27

I meant a wet set with old style rollers not heated rollers

Could also use rods

My hair is very long with layers so I’m hoping to not touch the roots (other than some texture/volume powder) and the curls be big and bouncy sort of ear level down if that makes sense. I can get to boots and Superdrug tomorrow for any products anyone can recommend form there? Or I have a curl mousse, heat protector, hairspray, various serums….. I don’t care if it feels crispy… want it to look good and last?

I would set it from wet using rollers, rods, rags, or apparently you can do it with a dressing down cord if you want it to definitely stay. Curls always last better set through the drying process than through heat treating dry hair, like tongs, straightener curls and heated rollers. But heated styling equipment is very quick and effective, whereas wet to dry setting takes a long time and can be a bit of a faff.

I use charles Worthington big hair mousse on dry hair then put in the rollers ans leave as long as possible. When you take them out spray with hairspray. Tons of hair spray

Nitgel · 29/09/2021 21:39

I know you don't want a wand but this one is great www.argos.co.uk/product/4375793?clickSR=slp:term:curling%20tongs:7:13:2

MoltonSilver · 29/09/2021 21:49

I find it helps to put a hot hairdryer over them to keep them warm a bit longer

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/09/2021 22:12

I'm surprised you can't get a result using rags. My hair is waist length and super thick with no layers and I can get decent ringlets (the size will depend on how much hair you put on each rag) which will last a good couple of days if i do them the evening before and sleep in them.

Nat6999 · 29/09/2021 22:18

Use mousse when drying, use the rollers & leave until completely cold, carefully remove the rollers & pin each curl back in. You could even wash & dry your hair, put rollers in & then go for a bath, the steam would set the curls. Do you have one of those plastic hoods you can attach to your dryer? You could put the rollers in, put the hood on & use the dryer on warm for maybe 20 minutes & then on cold for another 10 to set the curls.

Dontmindasking · 30/09/2021 09:35

I can use rags @HasaDigaEebowai but I don’t like the result. My hair isn’t naturally straight, lots of random all different curls/waves with straight bits, it’s horrible so I straighten it. I want nice even looking curls for going out etc and just can’t find something that lasts snd I like the result! Ghds do last but I don’t like that type of curl. Also I am rubbish at doing my own hair with Wands and tongs etc whereas rollers they all go in, in uniform style and I can’t really mess it up.:: but I need the hold!
