Orange highlights - blue shampoo enough? Pic attached

Hi,

Had a full head of highlights yesterday, mainly to cover some grey, but I've got naturally dark brown hair, so always pull a little warm. Was told toner would sort it out and so put my reservations to one side.

The bottom looks fine - actually I quite like it, but the colour from ears to the roots is ORANGE. It just does nothing for my skin tone and I'm already missing the dark.

I did say to the hairdresser that I thought it was too warm and she said she could tone it again to more ashy, but that ashy can be too harsh a contrast with the dark.

Could I de orange just using a blue shampoo? (I think I already have the Fanola and the Fudge) Or should I get another toner put on professionally?

TIA

Yeah, I'm booked in for a toner in a couple of days.

Tbf, in normal light it doesn't look as bad as it does in the last photo. Even I was shocked how it looked, but still, not great.

Question about ashy toners - will it actually be able to lift and cool or does it just need more bleach? I've noticed some much cooler tones near my temples and wondering if the bleach just took better in some areas. It really is quite a contrast.

Toner won’t lift, you’ll need another session of highlights. I’d pop in before your appt to show them the colour now (and that 3rd pic) as you can see where it looks too warm/orangey. They should rectify it free of charge if you’re not happy.

Only bleach, or a toner which you mix with a separate developer will lighten hair.

I don't think a blue toner would do much to that colour OP. However, it wouldn't do any harm to give it a shot. The worst it could do would be nothing.

Some toners leave it hair little dry, bung on a bit of an extra conditioner if you do it.

wondering if the bleach just took better in some areas.

IME bleach works faster when it's warm. ie the parts nearest the head. A decent hairdresser should mitigate for this though. This is usually more only a problem for home bleachers.

FreeBritnee · 28/09/2021 21:09

I thought it looked really nice. I don’t even mind the orange!

JuneOsborne · 28/09/2021 21:15

If you're not happy, you're not happy. Don't do anything at home, when you go back in for the toner, tell them you're not happy and want it rectified.

LindaLooky · 28/09/2021 21:18

When I've had a professional toner it looked great but lasted one wash.

GarfieldGirl · 29/09/2021 07:17

@harryandmarv, I would really like to avoid more bleach. I'm not sure my hair will take it towards the bottom. I don't really want it lighter, just less warm. Much less warm.

I use fanola purple shampoo and find that very effective. It’s very purple/ blue and stains the bathroom and my hands a bit! But does the trick.

GarfieldGirl · 29/09/2021 09:15

@KittyWindbag, but do you have brassy or yellow tones? Purple shampoo has done nothing for me in the past.

Fgs woman, just try the shampoo. It won't do it any harm whatsoever and with a bit of luck, it'll tone the brassy/warm/orange down.

GarfieldGirl · 29/09/2021 10:13

@Naaaaah Confused

Well I know but come on....... It's just shampoo. Nothing bad will happen. It'll either tone it or it won't. Just get on with it and come back n show us the results 😉

PineNutsAreOverpriced · 29/09/2021 12:05

I think you need highlights redone - if it hasn’t lifted enough then no toner will get you to the colour you want.

Speaks from bitter experience after being told not to worry - a toner will give you a nice clean blonde - after I told her that I don’t suit warm tones but she’d only lifted it to an yellow.

No the toner won’t! ( And it didn’t, just added some murk that came out every time I washed it)

PineNutsAreOverpriced · 29/09/2021 12:08

And I think if you use a home dye and mess up a bit by ending up brassy or yellow (which I have also done many times Grin) then messing about looking for blue or purple shampoos is acceptable, as you only have yourself to blame.

But when you’ve paid a hairdresser - get them to fix it and finish the job properly. Then you can use a blue shampoo for maintenance if you choose to, but not to rectify a bad job to start with.

KittyWindbag · 30/09/2021 06:00

I don’t have orange like yours, mine tends towards yellowish. Have you actually tried the fanola? It’s the only purple shampoo that has worked for me, I’ve used tigi, fudge, John Frieda…

I don’t understand, you have the shampoo but reluctant to try it? If you really think it’s unsolvable better go back and have them fix it.

GarfieldGirl · 30/09/2021 09:31

@KittyWindbag, it's not that I was reluctant, I just wasn't sure if it would be pointless and the only thing that could sort it was a professional toner. I wasn't going to be washing my hair before today or tomorrow.

As I said up thread, I'm booked in now anyway, later this morning actually, so will see how it turns out.

Yes you need a toner.
You can use a silver shampoo in the meantime. A cheap one will do.

GarfieldGirl · 30/09/2021 10:13

@LaBellina, silver?! I though blue was the answer!
