Retinol / retin-a for neck?

Saw retin-a mentioned on a thread and am confused about if you can but this! I'm looking for something good for my crepey neck. Would love some recommendations either way :-)

My neck has literally started to go crepey this week. One minute it was fine, the next it was my mother’s.

Following for recommendations

You can get prescription-strength retinol, known commercially as Tretinoin, through online pharmacies like Dermatica. It's a prescription drug but Dermatica have doctors who can prescribe it based on questionnaire/photos and then you pay about £20/month for the product. (I'm not shilling for Dermatica, there may be other online pharmacies that distribute it but it's the only one I know about. You can only get it privately, you can't get it through the NHS).

It really is the only thing that works, topically, for lines, anything less than prescription strength is pointless and any product you can buy on a shelf in Boots is also pointless. However, it's not going to do much for a crepey neck. It does wonders for really fine lines around the eyes and mouth but the only thing that will address loose or hanging skin is surgery.

This fb group has some great advice for retinol use. I found the pdf files really informative.
I order retinol online and I don’t pay anywhere near £20 per month.

You can get it through Indian pharmacies for cheaper, that's true, but for some people the faff/risk of that isn't worth the savings. If you are getting anything less than .25% it's completely pointless (and even that is only really a 'starter' dose and you will need to move up if you want to see any effect).
NugsNotDrugs · 23/09/2021 21:04

@Wroxie
Yes I agree re retinol dosage.
I get .5% and it’s working out fine for me.

bigburdd · 23/09/2021 21:09

I use an Alumier product neck and décolleté firming cream.
In fact I used it today on my developing turkey neck and found a lovely long black hair sticking out of my chin. Talk about adding insult to injury!!

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 21:49

I've tried everything. Retinol, prai, all of it even a thread lift and Profilo and it didn't help.

I lost over 6 stone in my 40's which left me with sagging skin on my neck and chin and now at 49 I had had enough of not being able to wear a polo neck without loose skin hanging over it.

I had a neck lift yesterday and There is a lot of swelling but my jowls have all but disappeared and my neck has no hanging skin anymore. I wish I'd done this ages ago as I've spent a fortune in the last 5 years trying to rectify what essentially can't be without surgery.

I think if you've got a mildly crepy neck then topical things like retinol can help, it depends what sort of result you want really.

Could you expand on the thread lift please? Was is good at all? Do they last? Do you get weird little dents or puckers where the threads attach?
Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:06

Yes so I did get a bit of puckering with the thread lift but it does go, the trouble is my sagging was so severe that it only lasted about 6 months or so and even then it was only about a 30 percent improvement I'd say.

I'm pretty sure if you only have mild sagging it would be far more effective though.

I took a photo before my op yesterday and then another one in the car in the way home. It was done under local, I traveled three hours to a very well known surgeon who does face lifts and neck lifts under local as the recovery time is faster and you can go home.

I won't lie, it's pretty sore today and I'm v bruised but I have my profile back again. In short I'm delighted with the result.

Depending on where you are I'm happy to recommend the dr who did my threads ( different to who did my surgery yesterday ) if you'd like? he's very good and uses silhouette soft, it's a lot cheaper than surgery and lasts approx a year. Smile

I've attached a pic of my neck surgery for anyone who might be interested, before and after in the same day!

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:10

Sorry I'm having trouble uploading - bear with me.

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:14

Before in the hotel just before setting off for my surgery and on the way home in the car ( 3 hrs journey home ) no bandages or anything as it's all under local - I have some pretty impressive stitches under my hair and behind my ear as it was a lower facelift ( due to sagging jowls ) and a neck lift at the same time.

CandyLeBonBon · 23/09/2021 22:15

@Wagsandclaws that looks amazing!

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:22

It's bloody painful! I'm over the moon though.

Four years I've tried everything and that was a last resort - tbh I wish I'd just done it now as threads are pretty uncomfortable in the neck too!

This was a before taken yesterday morning too.

What sort of cost are we looking at (if you don't mind saying?)

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:25

Straight after ( in the car again ) btw my lower face is v,v swollen I don't have a very wide face usually at the bottom it's all fluid, I have a non saggy neck now though!

So you can get a neck lift done under general from about 5k mine was v expensive for this procedure but he is one of a very few surgeons in the U.K. who do it under a local so I paid 10.5k.

If I add up all the thread lifts ( 1.5k a time ) and then the profilo treatments and bloody expensive creams I reckon I'd spent about £6k already. I just saved and saved for 18 months for this. I was booked in for Morpheus8 and facetite ( on my neck ) six months ago but cancelled at the last min as didn't want to waste another 3.5k on it.

It's a lot of money but I was ever so unhappy and it's such a relief - people who lose a lot of weight sometimes get a tummy tuck or whatever, my saggy stomach doesn't bother me nearly as much as my neck did, I'm so glad I got it done now.

Alternista · 23/09/2021 22:29

My GOD, it’s incredible, you must be thrilled. Id also like to know about cost please if not too cheeky?!

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:32

@Alternista see below Smile you can get it much cheaper if you are happy to go under I just didn't want to and wanted to avoid all the bandages and stuff after hence why I went for this.

Wow. It does look amazing though! I'd like that and my c-section 'apron' doing.

Maybe I need to sell one of the children! Grin

Wagsandclaws · 23/09/2021 22:42

My c sections and being 18 stone 4 have buggered my tummy but, meh ... I've made very good friends with some Spanx Grin

I've been taking photos today and with my hair pinned back it's a lot more gruesome and I think it'll be a while till I can wear my hair up again ( and turn my head fully left and right as it feels v tight atm ) but still no regrets.

I still have a small double chin left which he said he can sort out with lipo if I wanted but I'm super happy with what he's done so I think that's it Smile

You look amazing!

Wagsandclaws · 24/09/2021 09:37

Thank you so much 😀 I had a much better night last night!

I think I'm going to start a thread about it as I see lots of threads in necks and jowls in S&B and it might be useful for someone.

I was going to say that strivectin neck cream is also supposed to be amazing, there are before and after pics - I've used it and whilst it did improve the texture a little obviously it won't do much for gravity.

KittytheHare · 24/09/2021 09:45

@Wagsandclaws, you do look amazing, and thanks for sharing your story and pics, it's really interesting and informative.
