I’m so oily!!

I need help, my skin is both sensitive to break outs and very oily. Break outs are under control but I still have to be careful about the products I use, some can cause flare upside spots or redness (particularly perfumed ones).
I need a decent foundation with great coverage that doesn’t slip off and I think I need a primer.
Can anyone please make some recommendations for me? Happy to pay up to £35 for a good foundation. Before anyone mentions it I have tried Estee Lauder double wear in the past and just couldn’t seem to apply it correctly, it gathered in my pores.

Boots number 7 do a good primer. I have the exact same problem, really oily skin and hair too. It's awful. I always feel greasy by lunchtime and by the evening most of my make up has usually slid off! Get a good face wash and pads/cleanser for freshen ups.

SheWoreYellow · 22/09/2021 16:39

I bought the Sephora primer after doing quite a lot of research.

It might be worth you trying existing foundations over a primer before buying new quite yet. I found that worked with eyeliners.

I have a very oily forehead and dry, peely nose. I’ve tried Clinique, Benefit, Revlon, Maybelline and Boots but none of their foundations ever felt right on me.

I’ve finally got it under control. I use Simple toner followed by Clinique 72hr moisture surge every morning.

Then if I’m putting makeup on I’ll use Clinique primer which is fantastic to even everything out. I found Phoera liquid foundation on Amazon. I was very sceptical but it works beautifully on my skin and doesn’t feel heavy or caked on. I’m only a casual makeup wearer so I normally notice foundation but this stuff is great.

I'm devoted to the simple matifying moisturiser - life changer

wincy · 22/09/2021 18:17

0C8 mattifying gel. Unfortunately you now have to import it from USA so more expensive than it used to be. Use it as a primer.

ILookAtTheFloor · 22/09/2021 18:20

You'll have fewer wrinkles op, if you are truly oily. Many people actually have combination skin and the oilyness is caused by skin being dehydrated. Try and use some really hydrating skin care, even if it feels counter productive.

Matifying products can make oil worse.

After many attempts I've realised cream formulas will always sit on my oil slick skin and split. I use Bare Minerals original foundation. The powder works with my oil to make a creamy finish, looks better as the day goes on rather than worse.

Was just going to say Bare Minerals and @TheCategoryIs got there before me. I also have a face like an oil slick and it’s the only thing I can wear. It also doesn’t irritate my skin if I have a break out. It’s fantastic stuff.

CoolShoeshine · 22/09/2021 20:24

Thank you so much there are some really good recommendations that I can try on here. Yes it’s true I have no wrinkles (that might be because I’m overweight as well as oily Grin). Bizarrely though I don’t have greasy hair, I can easily go a week without washing it, and I don’t get sweaty. It’s just my face which is oily. I’m going to buy the simple products tomorrow as they’re not expensive so worth a try. I haven’t been using moisturiser or toner so I probably need to step up to the mark. I like the idea of Bare Minerals looking better as the day goes on - does that give reasonable coverage? I’ll try the no 7 recommendations too, thank you again they are all really appreciated.

I have oily skin and the best thing I do for it is to use an oil based make up remover which I don't wash off i.e. so it hangs about overnight. If your face is being stripped of its natural oils too much it will go into overproduction and make more. Or so someone told me, and it's worked for me.

KatharinaRosalie · 22/09/2021 20:33

Dr Hauschka Normalizing Oil and you can use any foundation

violetbunny · 22/09/2021 21:37

Very oily skin needs a bit of a "system" to deal with properly if it's super oily then one product alone isn't going to love it. Here is mine:

  • Use a gentle cleanser, don't overstrip the skin. Oily skin can still become dehydrated (where it lacks water; dry skin lacks oil).
  • Use a non greasy moisturiser. I find Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched face base very good for this, and it's excellent under makeup.
  • Oil absorbing primer - Smashbox Photo Finish Light is wonderful and never balls up.
  • Long wear foundation. The issue here is that many of them are flat, or quite heavy. Bobbi Brown Skin Longwear foundation is an excellent one for everyday wear. I also really like Armani Maestro, the Ellis Faas foundation, Dior Forever Matte liquid foundation, and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Longwear foundation.
  • A good lightweight setting powder. The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush powder compact is good, I also really like the By Terry Hyaluronic tinted loose powder.
  • Oil blotting sheets to control oil throughout the day. The paper ones are crap. The blue Clean and Clear oil blotting sheets are the bomb. I buy mine off EBay.

Hope that helps

WhatDidISayAlan · 22/09/2021 21:40

@CoolShoeshine my electrolysis tech showed me how to put it on - it’s great because you just load the brush, tap it, and brush on in circular motions for light coverage. If you want a thicker coverage you just brush another layer on. It’s better to layer up that way rather than stick a load on first time.

CoolShoeshine · 23/09/2021 07:08

So in the mornings should I be cleansing, toning, moisturising and then priming? Is that the correct order? I’ve spend so many years avoiding products which might give me acne I don’t really know! Also is toner recommended or could that ultimately cause my skin to produce more oil? My skin does feel nice and tight immediately after using toner but I’ll give it a miss if it’s damaging in the long run.

violetbunny thanks for the top tip re blotting sheets and amazon.

I discovered them in Japan when I lived there in the late 90s and I have a friend who sends some over to me from there a couple of times a year - they are great.

Didn't realise I could buy them here.

I actually use Simple hydrating oil cleanser every evening despite having oily skin.

KatharinaRosalie · 23/09/2021 07:26

I've tried all the non-oily and mattifying moisturizers in my youth. All they did was dry my skin out so it started producing more oil to compensate. Oil on oily skin works.

It's EBay that I buy them from. I'm not in the UK but can't get them locally either, however there are plenty of EBay sellers in Asia who ship them worldwide.
