Hello!

I would love some advice or tips please. I really don't like outdoor specific clothing because it doesn't suit me, so hip length rain jackets and puffers are not my thing. However, I appreciate that after temporarily living in the rainy Lake District for a few years I didnt have much of a choice.

I have moved further south now, close to Shropshire, and would love to put them to rest. Im fond of 3/4 length coats and long wool coats in winter, but what can I wear to keep warm enough if I don't want to layer to death with puffer style clothes?

Basically, I am tired of Mountain warehouse style clothes.....much prefer a pared down floaty wool style. Would a longer length wax jacket be warm enough? I don't like trends and am not interested in high street fashion much.

I admit I am out of touch a bit! Where I used to live, wool in winter was sodden within minutes :(

You just need good baselayers, like a merino or silk? These are thin so ideal for wearing under your clothes but also hold in your body heat so keep you toasty.

I have a couple of these from M&S which are great value

or something like this silk top would be ideal

Thanks this is great news!

I wore base layers when I lived up north but could never wear wool coats or regular jackets over them - still too damp and cold. Always had to wear extreme waterproof, windproof puffer style stuff.

I think the cumbrian climate was really harsh and unforgiving and I am still trying to loosen up and trust 'normal' clothes again!

There's loads of rain wear that isn't mountain warehouse style/utilitarian. Have you looked at Rains or Protected Species? Or Stutterheim? Wool coats are not a great idea on wet days.

A stylish rain coat with thermal long sleeve layers worn under your dress/ blouse works for me.

Will take a look at those, thank you!
