Dyson air wrap...is it worth it?

Hi,

So I'm thinking about buying a dyson air wrap, but obviously is not cheap. I don't really have fine or thick hair it's kind of inbetween but I have alot of it, generally it hold curls all day if I use a curling tong. I know it works better with certain hair types and I'm not sure how it will work with my hair type. My main question is it worth the price tag?

It's cheaper in the Dyson outlet- sells refurbs. Not all the attachments though, so you'd need to check and see if they're the set you need. Everyone I know who has one raves about them. I got the hair dryer and love it and am planning on the air wrap when I can afford it.

CrystalMaisie · 21/09/2021 21:19

I have fine but a lot of it slightly wavy hair.

If I tong my hair, it lasts 2 days, and stays wavy.

If I use the air wrap, I have to do it from wet (not partially dry, that doesn’t hold at all) I get firm curls. I find that as it relaxes, it doesn’t go into waves, like tonged hair does, it goes into bigger curls, a bit like it’s had heated curlers in it. Takes about an hour to do it properly, section by section.

ChinChilly · 22/09/2021 08:30

Thanks both, my hair is straight naturally so getting it to hold curls can be difficult. It gets such mixed reviews its really difficult to make a judgement. I tried one on one section of hair in John lewis yesterday but as you say @CrystalMaisie my hair was dry, i then went on to try a bunch of coat on so that probably didn't help, i found it dropped to a subtle wave after a few hours. Does it give you much volume? My hair seriousl lacks volume

I've had mine a few month and I looove it for curls, it's fine for blowdrying but I wouldn't recommend it unless you curl it 50% of the time. Definitely not worth the money for just blowdrying, not amazing at volume you can do much better with a hairdryer and a round brush.

RedPandaFluff · 22/09/2021 09:59

It's good, but it's not GREAT. I like mine but, objectively, I don't think it's worth the money and I can get the same effect with curling my hair with straighteners. I also have the Revlon One-Step which is really good at giving you the curly blow-dry look and is a tenth of the price.

I think if you order it directly from Dyson (or QVC possibly) you have a 30-day no-quibble returns period, so you could try it for a month and decide if you like it.

fluoropostit · 22/09/2021 10:06

I don’t rate it, I would get the dyson straighteners instead, they’re fab foe doing quick tonged curls, the only way I’ve ever succeeded.

ChinChilly · 22/09/2021 10:39

Thanks for all your responses.

I've never managed to do a bouncy blow dry at home as I'm so cak handed I just can't do the round brush and the hairdryer at the same time, apparently the air wrap makes it easier. I think once the air wrap complete long is back in stock on dyson and use it during the 30days and see if its worth the eye watering price tag.

I have one but am going to sell it. My babyliss is better for my hair.

KatharinaRosalie · 22/09/2021 11:44

I love it, I have fine hair and takes me just minutes to get big bouncy hair. But I don't use it to get tight long lasting curls, I think those are really better with a classical curling iron, so for me the Dyson is more of a replacement for Babyliss Big Hair. But way less damaging and doesn't leave hair fluffy and frizzy.

AlwaysaLittleBitTired · 22/09/2021 11:45

I have one. I love it. My hair is straight, and has a tendency these days to be fluffy/slightly frizzy - it was a long bob when I bought the Airwrap, and is now on my shoulders. I love that I can blow dry with it, and style.
The attachments mean that you can get volume with the round brush attachment, pretty smooth with the other brush attachments (such that I rarely use my GHD straighteners any more, and if I do it's a quick smooth over), and waves/curls with the curling attachments. I tend to wrap my hair manually around the curling wands, rather than allowing it to wrap with the air flow (I know that defeats the purpose!), but if you want full curls then the automatic airwrap function is great. I tend to leave the ends straight. I can now dry and curl my hair in 10 minutes from wet.
Have a look at Trinny's You Tube videos using the Airwrap. Her hair is probably similar to mine, so I found it useful to see how it works in practice.
I find it much less damaging than the direct heat of the curling tongs, or the Babyliss Big Curl which managed to frazzle the front section of my hair once (and made me look like Shirley Temple), but as others have said it works better from almost wet. That said, my DD has thick and heavy very straight hair, and we struggle to get a curly to stay in with anything - including the airwrap. Tiny sections would work I think, but who has the time?!

ChinChilly · 22/09/2021 15:12

@KatharinaRosalie I think the big bouncy style is what I'm after just so my hair actually looks like I've done something with it, I've heard it works quickly and thats what i need really.

@AlwaysaLittleBitTired thank you that's really helpful, I've seen on many reviews small sections work best but as you say timewise not so great.

It sounds like the airwrap is abit of a marmite product

OP posts:
IloveJudgeJudy · 25/09/2021 14:50

I tried it and sent it back. It sort of wrecked my hair as when you wrap your hair around the barrels it goes ends first, nearest the heat source. I did absolutely rate the straightening brush and would buy that if it was sold on its own.

I have the Dyson hairdryer and love that, as do all my DC which they were surprised at.

ChinChilly · 09/10/2021 14:32

If anybody ever comes across this post, I brought the airwrap but I am returning it! My hair looks amazing for about 15 minutes then it all drops out. I think if you've got thick course hair it will probably work for you. But for £450 it should work on any hair type... I would say save your money!

I have all the Dyson hair products sat beautifully in their original boxes.. including the hairdryer corrale straighteners airwrap collection...all gathering dust

I use the Revlon Pro One Step ... Ive never looked back... 🌸

Nap1983 · 09/10/2021 15:08

An alternative…. I have the GHD Oracle, it’s brilliant! Highly recommend and nowhere near the price of air wrap…

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 09/10/2021 15:12

I'm getting one from relatives for my next birthday. I feel pretty excited.

ChinChilly · 09/10/2021 15:38

I think it totally depends on your hair type as to if the style will last, I've got alot of soft hair so it just couldn't hold the style.

@Nap1983 my hair dresser recommended the GHD oracle, I have a GHD curling wand so when that dies I think I'll look into the oracle

I've just started my trial period for this. I've got coarse hair that used to be Hermione Granger levels of thick, but has thinned down to more of a normal thick in my later years. I occasionally colour my hair with balayage and it is usually dry, no matter what treatments I do.
Used the 30mm barrels on my long hair and got fairly good curls. They were a bit tight at first but have loosened up. Will let you know how I get on with it over the next few weeks for anyone that's undecided or has a similar hair type.

BelleOfTheProvince · 10/10/2021 10:36

This is after having slept on it. Curls have dropped quite a bit but looks tousled and styled still. No hairspray.
It feels a lot softer than my hair usually feels and looks shinier than when I air-dry it. I will make sure it's completely dry too next time as curls were still damp in some places. I imagine if I refine my method it might effect the look.

Dyson air wrap...is it worth it?
ChinChilly · 10/10/2021 12:06

I'm not bashing dyson I think it's a fab product if it works for your hair type.. I would recommend buying it direct from dyson or QVC as they both offer no quibble returns... apparently QVCs has been extended to 31st Jan 2022. Places like boots won't accept it back unless it is unused.

I think you're right to ask views though.. its a big purchase... I don't use any of mines.. not even the hair dryer now.. the barrels were great but the curl dropped so quickly ...

I prefer my Revlon One Step... its just easier

good luck in your search

BelleOfTheProvince · 10/10/2021 12:38

Tbh I'm a bit surprised how much the curls have dropped seeing as my hair usually holds a curl well.

However, it looks and feels a lot healthier than when I have used ghds. One side is a bit better than the other too so I'm hoping I will refine my method. Have bought from QVC so have thirty days to experiment.

ChinChilly · 10/10/2021 12:44

@QueenBee52 I brought one since I originally posted and I'm returning it for the same reasons it just doesn't hold the style.

@BelleOfTheProvince Check with QVC because I think you may have until the end of January to experiment its been extended because of Christmas

To get the curls to last, hair needs to be wet, not damp, and heat needs to be hot, followed by quite a long blast on the cold shot. And a small section of hair. It takes well over an hour to do and is a lot of faff.
