Smart but comfy outer garment for travelling

I'll try and explain what I'm trying to find and maybe you lovely people could help me find it....

I want something to wear when travelling eg in the airport, on the plane, cooler evenings.

Cosy as a fleece or cardigan but smarter, longer than a blazer and comfier. Possibly a 'coatigan', but not seeing any I like.

Needs to come at least to the bottom of my buttocks, as I like to wear longer tops and don't like tops to show under outerwear.

Most of my holiday tops/dresses are patterned so need this thing to be plain or plain enough to wear with patterns .

I prefer autumnal colours, don't wear pinks or baby blues/soft greens. I'm trying to move away from everything I wear being black but would consider.

I'm 5'4 and size 14 so need something that wouldn't make me look too dumpy.

Budget £50-£60. Preferably less.

Thank you!

I have a gorgeous soft wool shawlish thing. It’s rectangular in shape with a split halfway down the length, with each half going over a shoulder if that makes sense. It reaches below my (large) bum and is very cosy warm and flattering. Anyone know what they’re called?

Like this but nicer!

Maybe this one? Or is it too brown?

Ah, I know what you mean. I think they are just described as wraps. Like this

@lolliespalooza
So they are… That’s how I think of big scarves! I needn’t have done that whole rambling paragraph then Blush

IloveJudgeJudy · 19/09/2021 23:25

I suggest looking at longline cardigan in M&S. There are lots on their website. I have one myself without buttons that I can't be bothered to look for atm but I find it really versatile. DS1 bought me my first one and I haven't looked back. Much better and more flattering than coatigans imo.

IloveJudgeJudy · 19/09/2021 23:26

I also always pack a pashmina for the flight.

Guineapigbridge · 20/09/2021 00:36

Merino is your friend, but you're going to have to spend a bit more. It's an investment piece.

I travel all the time for work and always wear my Merino slacks, leather trainers, Merino tshirt, pashmina scarf and a Merino waterfall cardigan when I do. Not too hot, never cold, never smelly and looks good on arrival. Icebreaker is a decent brand that washes well and has impeccable environmental credentials.

Thank you @lolliespalooza Yes, that's the sort of thing but perhaps not so long - definitely along the right lines tho

Now I'd not thought of that sort of thing @FelicityBeedle, will think about that - could look quite glam too. Thanks to
@lolliespalooza
again too

Thanks @IloveJudgeJudy I live in long line cardigans, including from M&S do was really after something a but different- but yes these are really useful wardrobe staples.

[quote Grellbunt]Try the 12, they come up large

That's lovely @Grellbunt and a bargain. Looks a bit too substantial/warm for this purpose but tempted as it looks great

Thanks @Guineapigbridge I'd pay more for the perfect piece, will investigate.

I tried this French Connection waterfall jacket on today, almost perfect - super soft and looks like it wouldn't crease, but it's just a little too short and the navy did't look right with the trousers I was wearing which I often travel in. Something like that, slightly longer would be ideal. I'd hoped they might do it in other coiours so it would go with black or navy outfits but sadly not.

feesh · 20/09/2021 15:48

A jersey boyfriend blazer type thing? I’ve had some really soft and comfy jersey blazers in the past, and if you could find a boyfriend style it would be longer and comfier

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/09/2021 16:08

Definitely a possibility @feesh
I did love the FC one - bit hard to see it on the website. It had more structure than a cardigan, but not overly formal.

Pure Collection do a range of longline cashmere cardigans - some buttoned and some open at the front. They also do a poncho which can look good depending on what you wear underneath.

orinocoloco · 20/09/2021 16:41

Land's End do fleece blazers - I've just bought two for work zoom meetings, I have one on now and it's very soft and comfortable but looks reasonably smart.

I'd go for the tall if you want it a bit longer - I've gone for standard as I'm sat at my desk but if I were wearing it normally I'd get tall.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/09/2021 16:55

Thank you @orinocoloco - I've just had a look but in my size & tall they only have bright red, not sure if I'm brave enough for that - although it would go with most of the colours I wear I guess. I'll keep checking as I think they would be ideal, thanks again.

What sort of silhouette do you what? My aim would be some lovely oversized, slouchy, maybe sliding off a shoulder thing that looks like I might have just casually thrown it on at the last minute but I’ve actually spent months hunting down and matching it to my colour palette. Maybe something like this

Sorry, didn’t spot budget. If you know someone with a blue light card you can get money off

I love that Woolovers shawl @lolliespalooza and the Anthropologie velvet @Chocolatecoatedkettlebell

@RockingMyFiftiesNot have you looked at Elsie’s Attic? They have several options.
