Grey hair advice

My naturally mouse brown hair has started going grey at the roots the past few years (40's). I was trying to box dye it but it wouldn't cover (if at all) for longer than a week and I hated doing it. Now having half head highlights every 4 weeks to blend the grey and so overall look is lighter but after a week the greys show again - if they even cover in the first place. Everyone talks about the choice between colouring and going grey - I'm choosing to colour but STILL can't successfully cover the grey. Help!

I had highlights for 20 plus years and I don’t think my greys were ever totally hidden. Even on the day of colouring they were visible, especially around the temples. I think you need an overall dye, but the upkeep would be challenging. I’ve decided to go with the grey but I’m 57, I got fed up with the three hour appointments every six weeks, never mind the cost

Well early fifties and bit the bullet for silver hair. I get so many compliments honestly. Its a huge relief. I am now at the point where I have literally a tiny amount of old dye in my hair which will be cut in October and then I will be fully silver. The key is to keep it in good condition. My hair is at shoulder length and I really love it now. I was love hate through the growing out process. I had a fab hairdresser that managed to chop into it so I didn't have the badger stripe so much. That and I did it through lockdown.
If you don't want to go silver, what about highlights? Good for blending in the stubborn greys. It will require maintenance though.

Embrace the grey.

If you have a good haircut it will look fab. So much better than keeping on trying to hide it, IMO.

The only way to cover grey is to dye all your hair, as highlights only colours thin slices of your hair so there will always be visible grey hairs popping through.

Enquire about a root smudge?

When you say box color wouldn't cover for more than a week, I'm wondering if you mean it would fade (which means you were using a bad brand) or if your hair just grew out (which would happen no matter what).

Roots will show after a week if you have fast-growing hair. Maybe you could try a color half-way between the grown and the gray.

Talk to your hairdresser. If you are only in your forties I understand why you don't want to go grey.
