STILL no testers for lippies etc in stores

How long is this going on?

I was in today thinking of browsing lipsticks (I usually buy high end but just fancied something cheaper) and there is no way to even SEE the colours apart from the faded swatch on the stand.

I can't see the issue if they allow testers, but keep gel and / or tissues next to the stands for people to clean their hands

I was in Fenwicks a couple of weeks ago. There were lipstick testers and I watched a woman apply them straight on her face.

I wouldn't have done this before covid. Certainly wouldn't now.

Ponks · 16/09/2021 21:24

I was in Boots a week or so ago and the No7 stand had testers again.

Shurl · 16/09/2021 21:27

I agree OP. I want testers. When I bought lippie precovid, I picked up say 10 testers, looked at the real colour (always world's away from the paper colour), put 8 back without trying and tried 2 on my hand. I might buy one of those. With those odds, there is no way I am buying without testers!

ffsffsffsffsffs5 · 16/09/2021 21:33

Well fuck me the world will fall apart if we can’t see lipstick colours won’t it?

I have Long Covid and have lost my job, rarely see family as I can’t drive - and there appears to be NO TREATMENT for this hell. - Let alone any official recognition of what us Long haulers are going through.

Meanwhile lots of people have lost family members.

I wish lipstick was all I had to worry about.

tintodeverano2 · 16/09/2021 21:35

@DevonBelles

High end cosmetic companies provide a tester and the asst uses a cotton bud to take some lipstick and then spreads it on your hand, or for you to apply to your lips etc.

I think it's illogical.

People are touching handles, doors, keypads etc in stores all of the time.

If you are suggesting people apply testers to their lips and others do the same that is gross. I've never done that ever.

But applying it to your hand and then wiping it off with gel- what's the risk of infection there?

Buy high-end products then! Not everyone tests on their hands 🤮 I've seen people do most of their makeup in boots and Superdrug before! I'm glad the gross testers are no longer available!
AColdDuncanGoodhew · 16/09/2021 21:41

I buy most of my makeup either online or in Boots/Superdrug and if it's something new I Google for swatches, blog reviews, Reddit posts, YouTube videos etc etc. I've done this since before testers were scrapped and haven't had a problem with colour matching.

As an aside I have quite pigmented lips naturally and I've swatched lipsticks on my wrist, thought they looked lovely then when they get home they look awful on my lips, hence turning to Google for swatches.

There's a few YouTubers I love with similar colouring to me and similar makeup styles so if they use a product I like the look of I tend to buy in the same shades they use

That sounds awful Thanks but if you don't want to talk about makeup then don't visit the style and beauty board.
Eaumyword · 16/09/2021 22:05

@ffsffsffsffsffs5 so sorry to hear your troubles, it all sounds awful and I hope things improve for you soon.
Mumsnet S&B might seem frivolous, but certainly for me, it is a welcome distraction from unhappiness at times for reasons I won't go into and a bit of banter with the regulars is something I look forward to.
Whatever gets you through I suppose. All the best to you Flowers

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/09/2021 23:49

ffs if someone was on a thread about long Covid or unemployment, complaining about lack of make up testers, you'd have a point. But this isn't a thread about those things - it's a thread about testers!
We've all got problems and you have no idea what other people's are. It doesn't mean we can't also think about lipstick!

Driftingblue · 17/09/2021 00:34

Imagine Professor Farnsworth declaring “I don’t want to live on this planet anymore” and you have a good idea of what I look like right at this moment.

Youre on the style and beauty thread. What do you think is going to be discussed? Just because you have big worries, doesn't mean others can't have small ones. They're all part of life.
Acrackineverything · 17/09/2021 00:40

Yep I agree OP, I'm an absolute makeup junkie and I haven't bought a single item since covid. I won't buy any makeup without testing it first; its as much about texture as colour isn't it? Sales of lipstick in particular must have collapsed, I'd imagine shops will have to reinstate testers eventually. I've yet to see an online swatch and say "yes that'll look good on me" but I can tell instantly if a colour will suit me when tested on my hand.

And I'm a reasonably intelligent adult so well capable of doing my own risk assessment and of cleaning my hand after testing.

Porridgealert · 17/09/2021 00:52

Revolution had an offer on fOr a set of lipsticks which seemed the right colour but the reviews were that they were orange rather than nude. And all the palettes have lids on. How can you choose anything? I hate it!
I don't think testers will return because it saves the shops money.

DevonBelles · 17/09/2021 07:54

I wonder if all the posters saying you can catch Covid from trying a lippy on your hand are the people on trains, tubes, and supermarkets, having loud conversations with other people WEARING NO MASKS.
Hopefully not.

You are more likely to catch something from another person standing next to you for some time, breathing in their virus, than some make up on your hand, for a few seconds. (There is some doubt now anyway that Covid can be spread by touching objects.)

What's going to happen is that people will prise open the lippies on display and use them as a tester, then put it back on the shelf for some unsuspecting person to buy.

Happened before CV and will again.

Yep, already seen this.

Porridgealert · 17/09/2021 18:39

Went to TK Maxx this afternoon and, as to be expected, people had had enough and had opened the boxes to test them. I just don't get what the big deal is having testers out to rub on the back of your hand. The likelihood of passing covid on that way is so remote.

WhereAreWeNow · 18/09/2021 07:33

Testers are back in lots of shops. M&S has testers again and so has Boots.

WrinklesShminkles · 18/09/2021 10:51

Not at the self-service counters.

Milomonster · 18/09/2021 17:43

Testers in all major C London stores - went to look for poppies yesterday and got assustants to sanitize.

Eesha · 19/09/2021 08:13

I tend to use online things like MAC try on then buy the colour or the similar cheaper one.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 19/09/2021 08:16

I do cosmetics in tesco, testers are not coming back anytime yet.
