Selling clothes

bookish83 · 15/09/2021 13:17

Hi,

Just gathering ideas on which platform is best to sell on for good condition, high street, baby/my clothes?

I have always used ebay and been happy to. The fees have been so high though I think, especially now they take fees off your postage costs too.

Considering depop and vinted but never used them to sell, only depop to buy.

Brands are typically Seasalt, M&S, Clarks, BNWT baby bundles type.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I sent a bag to isecondthat - www.isecondthat.co.uk/

Might be worth a try?

And how much did you get out of interest? I used Loopster and they were super fussy and I didn't make much

I use eBay still. I've made over £2000 selling my old clothes ( mix of higher end high street and H&M) since June. I use their suggestions for most items and sell buy it now. The fees are 12.5% in total and that's less than it used to be using PayPal for payment. I use Royal Mail and happy to pay 30p to collect from my door. I ask £4 for postage for most things which covers £3 Royal Mail, 30p plus packaging/ printer paper etc. I'd suggest you give it a go. Using the app it takes about 5 mito photograph and upload each item.

Does anyone have a detailed breakdown of the costs for eBay please, looking at selling some magic the gathering cards, and trying to understand what's terms, is very puzzling.

bookish83 · 16/09/2021 06:36

Thank you everyone! I will check out the link too.

@Sooverthemill thanks so much for the detail. That actually makes me feel better about it. I think my problem is I always charged exact postage amounts, but actually a little bit extra really is ok to cover costs. Need to get selling!

I have sold a few bits on vinted but it’s a bit slow. It’s similar to eBay but you list it for the price you want, people can make offers. I listed a few bits last week and have sold 2 items, listed more yesterday. It’s much slower than eBay and I seem to be finding more to buy 🤣.

If someone buys more than one thing at a time I adjust the postage , you can do this by sending an invoice to the buyer so eg 2 t shirts listed separately I charge to cost of the item plus £4 for the 2 for postage. No one has ever queried postage costs which surprised me but I don't feel I make any kind of profit in postage! I reuse all packaging I get though did buy a small number of sealable bags ( from eBay) for about £2.99. It's simple.

@Hawkins001 eBay has lots of pages on this stuff. If you use the eBay payment system as they now practically force you to, it's 12.5% of the final price plus postage. It's less than it was previously adding tighter the completed eBay fee structure plus PayPal admin costs. I never ever do any listings that cost extra, eg I don't do sub headings or special photos. Every 2 days they send your money ( no longer immediate) to your bank account.

autumnapplepicking · 16/09/2021 10:51

I prefer to sell on Vinted. There's no seller fees which is great, I managed to sell a good amount earlier in the year.

Sooverthemill · 16/09/2021 11:38

@autumnapplepicking I think it depends on your demographic. No one I know in real life shops on Vinted ( I'm old) or depop apart from from MH adult children

Hawkins001 · 16/09/2021 18:16

*Sooverthemill

Much appreciated thank you

NotImpossible · 16/09/2021 22:09

I shop on Vinted a lot but I generally expect to pay less than I would on eBay because of the reduced buyer protection. I really like the simplicity of the selling process.

As a seller I expect higher prices on eBay but this is sometimes offset by fees/hassle!

Fedupcyclist · 17/09/2021 20:06

I use Vinted. Used to use eBay but just find Vinted less faff so swapped. Although you probably sell for more on eBay.

Second hand clothes are going for much less than they used to. With lockdowns everyone has had clear outs and is getting rid of office / formal wear in particular.
You’ll only sell on Vinted if you price low. So unless it’s very unique & desirable price low. I’ve had to get over the mindset of thinking “oh but this is a Reiss dress and I’ve only worn it once it must be worth £50” and accept it’s worth what people will pay for it, which in my experience is £5-£10 (unless it’s very current). It’s better to have £5 in my pocket than a dress that doesn’t fit anymore.

People like bundles so if you list numerous items people are more likely to buy.

Kids stuff sells well if decent brands and priced low. I’ve sold a few bundles for £10 each.

One annoying thing about Vinted is you don’t get paid until after the sale & it often takes ages for buyers to collect parcels from collection point & complete the order, which is annoying.

I buy on Vinted and have got some fab stuff, mostly kids stuff. Now I’m more experienced I watch the new items being listed and if I see something I like I check what else the seller has. With kids stuff like tops/ dresses and everyday clothes I only tend to buy where a seller is selling multiple things I like so I buy a bundle & save on postage. If it’s something I really really want or a massive bargain I’ll just buy a single item though.

Overall the stuff I’ve bought has been great.

Not sure what the buyer protection fee is about as the one time I’ve had a dispute about item quality the advice was to try & resolve it directly with the seller. I was able to resolve it amicably but not sure what would have happened otherwise?!

Fedupcyclist · 17/09/2021 20:07

Also - some brands don’t do very well on Vinted eg Baukjen stuff I’ve listed attracted no interest even though it’s considered a desirable brand on mumsnet. I guess it’s the demographic currently using the app

MissTheobald · 17/09/2021 20:28

Interesting thread, hope you don't mind me hopping in with a question, OP.

To those of you (I think @Sooverthemill said this) who send using Royal Mail, do you never have issues with buyers claiming not to have received things? I always send using a tracked service for this reason, but at the same time worry that the slightly higher price (usually £4.20) will put buyers off.

TheTeenageYears · 17/09/2021 20:38

I've used ebay to sell stuff for years although admittedly not this year yet just in case things have changed. I always factor the fees into the postage so postage price + 10% plus whatever the paypal fees are (+ 10%) to receive the funds at the starting price. As I have explained to a few people who have queried the postal price that way if an item only goes for 99p whilst I haven't made anything like enough to cover the time involved in listing, packing and posting I am at least not out of pocket. If you don't factor in all those things you could end up with less than 50p if something goes for 99p and honesty I would rather just give the item away than go through all the work for nothing. In some cases it could actually cost you money if you get the postage wrong.

Fedupcyclist · 17/09/2021 20:58

@MissTheobald that’s why I use Vinted & post via Hermes - it’s tracked & only costs £1.69 for a small package like a single item of clothing (unless a bulky coat or something)

Fedupcyclist · 17/09/2021 21:00

£4 plus postage would put me straight off unless it was an amazing bargain

Fedupcyclist · 17/09/2021 21:01

@TheTeenageYears that’s why I use Vinted as no seller fees and it’s set price.
I list for the minimum I need to make it worth the hassle for me of posting etc. If it doesn’t sell after a few months I delist and give it to charity

MissTheobald · 17/09/2021 21:31

@Fedupcyclist that's useful to know, thanks. Yes, tbh the postage would put me off too as a buyer, but as a seller I'm too nervous of wannabe scammers. I wonder whether Hermes is available on Ebay...I've never thought to check. If not I might check out Vinted.

CovidPassQuestion · 17/09/2021 21:58

@MissTheobald some eBay sellers use Hermes, definitely.

Fedupcyclist · 17/09/2021 22:05

It obviously also depends where your local Hermes drop off is. I pass one every day, whereas the Post Office is out of my way and not open evenings or Sundays so posting Royal Mail is too much hassle.

On Vinted you can turn off postage settings so I only offer Hermes.
