Need a raincoat - anyone bought or have a Rains one?

Need to get a raincoat (mainly for city type use) but needed when bucketing down and going from car to house or walk in park.

Did some googling and saw this brand which looks good

Or any other recommendations ?

My friend has a Rains one and loves it. I have a Protected Species one and also recommend them - keeps me dry and isn’t too raincoat in styles

I’ve been thinking about a rains one for years and eventually ordered recently. I could see it was def waterproof but not lined and was v thin material. Poppers to fasten up and I thought that I’d end up ripping the material when opening the poppers unless I was very careful. I sent it back as it just seemed v thin and not great quality but I don’t know if all
Of them are the same

iwantavuvezela · 14/09/2021 18:34

@IDontThinkSoNo - were they true to size?
I don't mind it being thin -actually would prefer that - might need to think about the popper fastening although when i look at the "Storm Breaker" that one seems to have a zip

They are very large. I got an XS and I am usually a S. If there has been XXS it would have fitted. However, I used it all Summer as we had a wet miserable one here 😂

I will continue to use it in winter with a thin puffer jacket underneath. I really like mine. It looks ‘cooler’ than my previous raincoat.

I am hunting for a raincoat too.
Apparently I need a 10,000 something or other, to stop me getting wet in downpours.
Just going by comments on here, is a Rains Coat suitable for heavy downpours?

Seainasive · 14/09/2021 19:31

I love my Protected Species Commuter.

RaspberryThief · 14/09/2021 19:38

That Rains one linked above is only waterproof to 4000mm. I'd class that as showerproof, not waterproof. It would keep you dry between house and car yes, but probably not over longish walks in the park and definitely not in a "downpour". By comparison, the Protected Species Commuter a PP mentioned is waterproof to 15000mm.

Miseryisabutterfly · 14/09/2021 20:05

I have 2 and I like them but dh has one and all the poppers have come off (this can happen easily, as pp mentioned). They do have some styles with zips.

Miseryisabutterfly · 14/09/2021 20:06

They are definitely waterproof! I’ve been in torrential conditions for up to 45 minutes and been fine.

iwantavuvezela · 14/09/2021 20:46

@Miseryisabutterfly would you agree with pp that they come up big - might get the zip one to avoid poppers problem!

@iwantavuvezela they definitely come up big because they’re unisex. One of mine is size XS/S and the other is S/M and I’m a 12 at the moment. I prefer the fit of the smaller one.

Sickoffamilydrama · 15/09/2021 08:03

I have a long rains coat it's one of my best purchases and had kept me dry during sideways coastal rain.

But they are unlined so not really good for winter and do come up big. I've got poppers and not had any problems.

iwantavuvezela · 15/09/2021 09:44

Thank you - ordered one (sized down) - looking forward to having an actual raincoat!

I have 2, an unlined pooper one, over 6 years old and bloody brilliant! The only raincoat that actually does the job! Got a second one, alpine, cosy, light, zip and waterproof. LOVE THEM BOTH
Well, as much as you can live a raincoat!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 15/09/2021 11:38

I have 2 as well, the long belted unlined one and the long puffer. Love them.

silverbubbles · 15/09/2021 11:45

I have a rains poncho with poppers on the side - worth every penny and gets lots of comments.
Totally waterproof.

Sickoffamilydrama · 16/09/2021 22:03

Just been looking at rains winter collection what is it about the miserable looking models? Honestly do you think they say okay as this is a wet/cold weather coat imagine it's miserable weather...and then photographs them??

savvy7 · 16/09/2021 22:24

I have the Rains curve and really like it. It is unlined so needs an extra layer underneath but it is properly waterproof
