Going to a party the week after next - lots of MPs and political lobbyists going.

The party is supper and drinks at an MP's London home.
What shall I wear?

AND the leopard skin LK bennett kitten heels circa 2004, MI, come on!

motherinferior · 07/12/2007 15:43

And, obviously, a pout.

I have to say that I went to a Do full of Tories back in August (don't ask, just don't) and it was wall to wall navy blazers. I drank so much that I have virtually given up drink since then

mintydixcharrington · 07/12/2007 16:04

Mother INFERIOR!!!!
You went to a DO full of TORIES? I thought you were an unreconstructed Trotskyite? You should be ASHAMED

motherinferior · 07/12/2007 16:11

Am not Trotskyite. Am LeftyPinkoFeminist type .

But Mr Inferior (who's a LibDem) went to school with a positive nest of them. God we were pissed. Lurched off onto the bus - where we had a drunken argument - and had to apologise to the babysitter the following day for being so repulsively hammered. AND DD2 had a new friend round and I had to lie on the sofa sipping ginger beer and trying not to chuck my guts up...

I'm sure you'll have a lovely time though, Swedes /

mintydixcharrington · 07/12/2007 16:13

you say tomato, I say tomayto
you say pinko, I say trotsky

We were the only bus-riders there, strangely enough.

Vats of rose. VATs, I tell you, vats.

And I was most inappropriately dressed in a very old (bought for my 37th birthday party, which happened to be just after I'd conceived DD1) red Jigsaw strappy petticoaty frock over a T-shirt and leggings

Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 16:47

Wall to wall navy blazers does not sound good - I am visualising them on the women too. I thought fashionable and Tory were two words that you could now place in the same sentence without everyone falling around laughing. (Mrs Cameron, Anya H, Zac Goldsmith, struggling now ).

Now the serious bit:

The Whistles batwing tunic looks too Hampstead Bazaar/Abigails Party - either way not a good look - I think it will have to go back

I have a very nice black velvet skirt.
I have a couple of wrap dresses - but won't I look like last-season woman (might as well add a pash and enjoy!)?
I have some lovely Thierry Rabotin black shoes, brand new.
I have a nice pair of pewter velvet bootcut trousers
I have boots
I could wear this as I bought it a few weeks ago with the pewter velvet trousers - oh but what shoes to wear with it?

OP posts:
mintydixcharrington · 07/12/2007 16:52

I think wrap dresses sounds perfect
and the pash if you like
in for a penny in for a pound
and if the boots go with the wrap dress stick them on too
I like the wrap dress and boots look, a bit edgier than pumps

perfect

Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 17:01

Minty - or can I call you wardrobe mistress?

Thank you. One more q. Plain black wrap dress or patterned one (Boden's slate leaf collage pattern in case you know it)?
I only have black boots.
Pashmina or nice organza scarf with embroidered/eaised crocheted bits?
Can you tell I am jeans, and plain top woman?

OP posts:
Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 17:02

raised not eaised.

OP posts:
mintydixcharrington · 07/12/2007 17:08

patterned
if it goes with black boots
if it doesn't then patterned with black shoes

pashmina if you are feeling cold and want to go that route
not sure about nice organza scarf without seeing it - would you tie it aroundyour neck in jaunty fashion a la brigitte bardot? Or is it bigger than that?

Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 17:49

organza thing is a big wrap, same size as a pashmina. If I wear the patterned dress, I won't need the wrap _ i just thought black dress and black boots might look a bit funereal with nothing to lift it.

Will wear patterned dress and plain long black boots - will try with pashminas and without. I have got black boden velvet coat and today green one arrived too.

Thank you very much Minty.

Wrap dresses? Boden velvet coats?

We are living on different wardrobe planets

Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 18:23

Anna - Do you mean you think it is all a bit last season woman?

OP posts:
Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 20:08

Anna - Bearing in mind the party is London - not the salons of the 16eme arrondissement - what would you wear?

OP posts:
ggirlsbells · 07/12/2007 20:12

I would be terrified to go to party with anna and pph

Anna8888 · 08/12/2007 10:54

Swedes - wrap dresses and velvet coats are definitely daywear in my book. I would dress up more to go out in the evening - and, yes, TBH, I think wrap dresses are past their sell-by date.

However, I think it is incredibly hard to do virtual makeovers without knowing the person so, despite lots of head scratching, I don't really know what to tell you.

Designers I like are Marni and Prada and although I definitely don't always spend that kind of money, I use them for inspiration. Is there a designer you admire that you could use to inspire you?

I would have thought that you might be a MaxMara type and MM does loads of evening wear.
