Autumn Apples!

If you are an apple shape, what are you planning to wear this autumn?

I've gained a bit of weight and am struggling! I'm also tall and short dresses look like long tops on me, which is annoying as my legs are my best feature. Can't find the right jeans either.

Help please!

Oh I feel you.

At the moment I’m wearing:
Denim dungarees with a close fitting top
Shorts and long sleeved t-shirt (still quite warm here)
Tapered checked joggers with black top (balances me out)
Shirt dresses

As it gets colder I’m planning to wear:
Dungarees and thin slim fit jumper
Boyfriend jeans and looser jumper
Leopard leggings and denim shirt

That’s as far as I’ve got! I’m a student after years in smart-ish work wear so have some shopping to do.

I got out some maxi skirts yesterday to try on with a slim fitting top but they don’t look right - the waistband is snug on my stomach and then it goes in rather than out over my non existent hips - gah. Looks rubbish. I honestly hate this body shape. Apart from the legs, they’re great.

Hi bill!

I share your hatred of this body shape, except legs...ok and the boobs, which I do actually like.

I have a couple of maxi skirts, but agree they can sit badly on my tummy.

I'm wondering if A-line midi skirts or knee length maybe might be better for me.

I haven't tried boyfriend jeans! One of the few cuts I haven't tried on, so will have a look for some.

I was thinking today that maybe wide leg would suit me too.

I have shirt dungarees. Haven't found long ones which suit me yet.

Jersey wide leg trousers and bat wing tops with trainers.

Leggings and longer length denim shirt or flannel shirt

Uniqlo boat neck ultra fine merino jumpers and mom jeans from m&s

Thermal long sleeve ts from uniqlo under everything when it's cold, rather than bulky jumpers that make me look like I'm about to topple over 😆

Lucy and Yak dungarees are good and hide a multitude. And are warm and autumnal. The length is true, in my experience.

I carry my weight in my middle pretty much exclusively. I wear short corduroy skirts with opaques. My legs are decent too.

Another top tip is to buy loads of Heattech Plus tops in M&S. They're very warm so you can wear thin floaty forgiving blouses and nobody knows how toasty you are underneath. But for the love of god size up as they are tight.

I struggle hugely with dresses and only bother with shift dresses. You just have to make sure the arms and neckline are neat and narrow. Then you can be wider in the body of the dress and still look a bit Jackie O. They are hard to find. Wallis used to be brilliant for shift dresses like that.

ElspethFlashman · 03/09/2021 15:22

Another good tip is Jersey trousers.

In M&S they're called Jersey tapered leg and in Next they're called Jersey joggers. They're essentially the same.

Fully elasticated at the waist but fall nicely around the leg without bulk.

Thanks for these ideas. I'll have a look online.

I probably need to do some in person shopping tbh. Tried on a dress today but it didn't fit and it was on sale so couldn't find the next size up Hmm

I did get a wide leg, casual jumpsuit recently which I quite like. It is jersey cotton. The only downside to that fabric is that it can flap about and cling to my lumps and bumps in the wind!

I find skirts make my tummy look bigger or maybe I’m more aware of it…! Short skirts are fine but the minute anything is maxi or midi just not for me. Midi or maxi dresses though are very flattering.

I’ll be wearing mom jeans and skinny jeans.
Boho printed blouses - long or 3/4 sleeves - wear tucked in.

A fake faux / vegan leather kind of oversized biker / aviator jacket. Not explaining it very well, it’s from topshop.

I fancy a denim shirt to wear with jeans but with a black belt so it’s less double denim.

Oh interesting beach, I think we must be slightly different shapes as a top tucked into jeans (especially skinnies) would make me look like as if a giant, red haired, robin and Humpty Dumpty had an affair 37 years ago and I was the resulting love child Grin

I see how skirts could emphasise my tummy too though Sad

Middle-aged apple here. Find skirts and wide legged trousers very difficult - anything that fits around my middle is really wide further down. I wear straight legged jeans/trousers a lot, chosing ones with a bit of stretch. I also like shirtdresses and/or shift dresses, and usually layer over or under them in the winter. Having said that, today I'm wearing a slightly a-line pinafore dress and that also looks good. Basically, nothing too tight or too loose!

Snog · 04/09/2021 09:19

I like pinafore dresses and dungarees in denim and corduroy - nothing tight around the waist.
