Help! Lunch event and I'm clueless

I have NEVER been on this part of the boards before but everybody always says you are all very wise so I'm looking for some help. I'm attending as a guest a lunch awards type thing next week, and have no idea what to wear. It's at a moderately fancy conference venue and it's work-related awards, but the work is outdoor/animal related so it won't be a bunch of glamorous media types or anything.

About me:

I'm not that brave with fashion, but I feel good in my safe (boring!) timeless type choices.
At an evening thing I would probably revert to classic black dressy pants with sparkly or splash of colour top and sparkly or splash of colour jacket.
I'm overweight (about size 18 but almost 6ft)...sort of general larger build, not that ladylike looking (I'm more Miranda Hart than Amanda Holden!)
Chest yes but not massive
Usually need longer leg length in trousers
Can't wear heels really
Don't ever really wear dresses/skirts

My go to workwear before lockdown was nice dark jeans, long boots, shirt, blazer kind of look. I err towards heritage and tailored looks I suppose.

100% sure I'm a fashion disaster generally, but if anybody has any inspiration for what I could wear next week I would be very grateful!

If you aren't the sort to dress formally in a skirt, dress or heels I would stick to your pre lockdown look but the best possible version of it. So smart, clean boots, not old battered ones and fresh black jeans not a faded pair. As long as the blazer and shirt are smart enough to look like you've made an effort then no-one will see your bottom half once you have sat down for the meal.
Looking smart is as much about grooming as it is the clothes. Look at Kate Middleton - she is often quite casually dressed for public appearances but she still looks smart because she has the perfect blow dry, groomed brows, manicured nails (and of course great jewellery!). If you can get any of these things done before your lunch you they will lift your look without you having to wear clothes that make you uncomfortable.

Have a nice lunch.

I don't think you could go wrong in a non high-fashion dress. Just something smartish and presentable and then you'll be neither over or under dressed.

Any of these?

Wear your black trousers and smart/clean shoes/boots
Then:

O Hobbs round neck cream blouse
or
Hobbs v neck blouse

Then put a neutral cream or grey longline cardigan over the top
M&S
another M&S - red one could work?
or go cashmere
Pure collection which are £££ but gorgeous

Ie don't wear a jacket if you don't have to - wear slightly smarter versions of what you already wear

ooh or this cotton cashmere mix jumper in cream (18) or purple (16)

Or this grey cardigan is in the sale at Landsend

You sound gorgeous as you are op! Completely agree just go as a smart version of yourself - get a cut hair, file your nails and if you wear it - light make up if not just a well scrubbed face 🤣 Then smart trousers, a smart shirt or blouse and a blazer - shoes either a pair of brogues or a smart pair of boots polished. Job done. Have fun and enjoy yourself.

Is it an annual event? For anything like that I google and look at the photos of previous years for ideas.

Deliaskis · 03/09/2021 09:01

Thanks for input folks, I have some inspiration and some ideas now. Appreciate your thoughts.
