90's - Spice Girls / Ruby Wax

Just watched Ruby Wax reminiscing about interviewing the Spice Girls in 1998.

The biggest pop act of its time and those women were beautiful and SO NATURAL.

The difference in the levels of make up, lashes, fillers, hair etc is remarkable compared to even non famous girls now.

Sharon Stone - the same. Beautiful but so natural

I hope we go back to this soon. Youth is beautiful on its own.

I don't really know what my point is- it just startled me!

I was watching an old 90's TOTP the other day and was thinking the same. It was so easy for me getting ready as a teenager! Now I feel ancient when it comes to make up and cosmetics.

I do sometimes wonder if fashion will ever go back to the 'natural' look, it would certainly be cheaper and less maintenance.

I do feel for girls today with so much to do. In the 90s as an indie girl, I would stick on jeans or a short cord skirt, band tee, docs and glitter on the cheekbones. Done!
Left much more time for drinking fun

You don't even have to go that far back - Girl's Aloud were the same to begin with...

I definitely agree that the make up was more natural in the 90's (maybe in response to the ridiculous make up of the 80's). But there was certainly a lot of plastic surgery back then, fake boobs were in - Baywatch, Pamela Anderson, Playboy bunnies. There was still a lot of fakeness around.

Interestingly, once the fake boobs got ridiculously huge, the trend seemed to go away. So maybe fillers etc have to go crazy for a bit first before people go the other way.

I'm hopeful that younger generations start to reject the insta-perfect nonsense.

I mean - Geri used to plaster it on a bit. But I take your point.

Pamela Anderson was on the same show kast night - yeah her body was something else.

I think I brushed my hair, put on mascara and lip gloss and debated if my slip dress was too short or not! Done.

I agree @MeredithGreyishblue young women need a degree in special effects or art to go out these days. The contouring etc is insane.

Women where I work take the afternoon off before an office night out, just to get ready. They sometimes get a professional make up artist involved. So much pressure and expectation on them, maybe cos they know they will be photographed all night and posted for judgement across social media. What a nightmare.

Iamthewombat · 30/08/2021 22:43

I think that the tide is turning already. Quite a few of the Kiko specialist make up shops are closing, for example, and I’ve noticed fewer young women with the full on contoured shaded look.

I remember those giant fake breasts of the 1990s. Grotesque. I am in favour of a return to the natural look!

ZednotZee · 31/08/2021 00:13

I mean this kindly but its only the working class girls who have the eyelashes/eyebrows/contour whole shebang these days
