How many jumpers/cardis do you own? Just curious, come in for a wardrobe chat

Just about to end my mat leave and have been studying my wardrobe over these months in order to prep and feel more “on point” for when I am back to work. I have given away a lot of stiff to chairty and carefully selected items which I love and are in good condition. I also did a bit of shopping and this is what I currently have in my wardrobe knitwear-wise:

  • 2 grey jumpers of different shape/texture
  • 1 black jumper
  • 3 navy jumpers, two of which have a pattern on it so they all look different despite same color
  • pink mohair jumper
  • 1 grey long cardi
  • 1 multicolor cardi

These are all fairly good quality (not super luxury but not even primark stuff)
Should I buy more? How many knitwwear pieces do you own and wear regularly?

Ah, ok @luckylavender. I'm sure some knits would suit you though. Thin-knit v-knecks could work. With a v-neck cardi.

Slouchy rather than fitted, fine rather than chunky.

Get the length right (I'm not sure how tall you are)

I reckon they'd work for you.

What is your greatest asset? Boobs? There are knits that work for boobs.

If you want them obviously. I'm not trying to force you into a knit if you're not keen!

LavendulaAngustifolia · 29/08/2021 21:42

A couple of Sweatshirts and hoodies
A couple of medium weight cotton cable knit jumpers
A couple of lightweight cashmeres
And just 1 crew neck cardigan.

I'd love a couple more for the collection and I'm keeping an eye out for some light/medium weight crew necks to replace ones that have worn through recently. I'm a second hand shopper so it takes a while before I can find the right size and shape for me.

lindyloo57 · 29/08/2021 21:45

@luckylavender where do you buy shirts that fit a bigger bust, I have this problem and find if they fit my bust its too big round my hips, plus do they keep you warm.

TuftyRusty · 29/08/2021 21:46

I have too many to count.. maybe 40 or so? I have roll necks, crew necks, one or two v necks and several cardigans - mostly all cropped or can be tucked in to higher waisted jeans. Lots of them are going strong after several years. Some were bought new and some second hand. Knitwear for me is worth investing in, along with coats, boots and bags as I love good quality traditional knits which don’t really go out of fashion. And I wear them about 8 months a year - I’m back in jeans and jumpers already as it’s getting cooler here.

My favourites brands are Genevieve Sweeney - I have a few including the Maud, which is gorgeous:

www.genevievesweeney.com/product/maud-lambswool-cashmere-black/

And the Knotty Ones:

www.theknottyones.com/products/heartbreaker-sweater-beige

L’Envers: www.lenversfashion.com/products/paola-sweater-organic-cotton-ocre

Oubas is also great, not loads on their website at the mo but I’m sure their winter knits will be on sale soon.

www.oubasknitwear.co.uk/

I also have one Fair Isle knit from Brora, and a lovely one from a few years ago from &Daughter.

And lots from Sézane - they really do good knitwear. In lovely colours and designs.

luckylavender · 29/08/2021 21:49

@ShrikeAttack - my narrow shoulders are my best asset. I just don't feel right in a jumper.

@lindyloo57 - I tend to wear either long shirts with a mandarin collar with trousers / jeans or an open shirt with a vest top.

Marghe87 · 29/08/2021 22:38

@TuftyRusty thanks for suggesting these, I will have a look at them all although I fear it will fill me with desire lol
I also think knitwear should be good quality, that’s why I own fewer pieces but nicely made. Interesting re Sezane knitwear’s quality, they are one of my fav brands (in terms of style) and I own two pair of shoes and a bag from them but I never got around to purchase their knitwear, despite loving pretty much every piece. Do you have any of their mohair ones? Do they shed? I have read very different opinions online.

So it seems there are two categories of people on here: those with very few and those with 30+ jumpers and cardis ahahah
To those of you who own so many: have you collected them over the years? Are they all still in good condition and do they get used or do you just not like to throw things away?

I have ones for at home and then some smarter ones

JaceLancs · 29/08/2021 22:47

All my knitwear is natural fibres - cashmere - merino - linen - cotton - lambs wool or a mix of them
I hand wash - debobble regularly and try and look after them to keep for years
Because I only buy plain colours and styles they are fairly timeless
Every year I probably buy 5-6 new items and sell anything that I’m bored with or that doesn’t fit anymore

MollyVolley · 29/08/2021 22:56

@Marghe87 I found my sezane mohair didn't shed but shrank after washing Shock but other knits I had from there didn't shrink

ShrikeAttack · 30/08/2021 01:43

@Marghe87, very good condition. The oldest are 17 years.

stripedbananas · 30/08/2021 02:51

Not many actually as they make me feel hot and bothered. I tend to wear cardigans or hoodies.

TuftyRusty · 30/08/2021 08:29

@Marghe87 I’ve never had a problem with Sézane knitwear other than bobbling - which is normal really, I just have a de-bobbler and just accept it takes a little effort to look after knits. No shrinkage or anything. There’s a lot of Sézane available second hand - eBay and Depop etc, I’ve been able to pick up a few new with tags for about half the price.

In answer to your other question, I’ve collected my knitwear over several years. I look after it - minimal washing, moth balls in the draws, de-bobble when needed. I can’t see why it won’t last for years to come. I have some vintage knitwear too - including something from my grandma which is probably 60 years old which is still going strong.

On that note if you like vintage and you like the style of Sézane you might like/I’d recommend Imparfaite Paris - I love the Austrian knits like these www.imparfaiteparis.com/produit/cardigan-autrichien-en-laine-bleue-nuit/

I’ve also remembered I have one knit from Ami Amalia, this one amiamalia.com/product/romanian-blouse-cardigan-navy/
They have some really gorgeous things if you need any more temptation Grin

chatw0o0 · 30/08/2021 08:43

I have got a couple of long cardigans (navy and grey) with pockets - v helpful! Have got a black shorter, round neck cardigan - purchased for the office - never worn! Have a merino/cotton mix jumper/thin knit in royal blue. And another cardigan that doesn't button up at all. Plus one sweatshirt.

Used to have a lot more in a myriad of colours - mainly for work - but cut back on them since moving to a warmer climate and not attending office for over a year!

ttcissoboring · 30/08/2021 08:47

Never counted but probably about five cardigans and maybe 20 jumpers

Marghe87 · 30/08/2021 10:50

@TuftyRusty thank you! Yes, I love a second hand knit in perfect condition, every time I find one I feel like I won the lottey 🤣
Gosh, the ones you linked are stunning😍 Will start thinking of a bday wishlist eheh

On a separate note, chenille jumpers yes or no? Found one I like at a great price but feel is a bit dated?

goose1964 · 30/08/2021 11:37

Cardis I have 3 a long black hooded one, a rib one and as an emergency ,it was colder than I expected, this but in a dark red www.bonmarche.co.uk/jumpers-and-cardigans/fan-stitch-edge-to-edge-cardigan-9000033.html?cgid=new-knitwear&dwvar_9000033_color=87

Fferny1 · 30/08/2021 13:17

Lots I think:

3 Whistles Cashmere cowl necks.
Navy Whistles V Neck.
Orange Pure Cashmere boyfriend Cardi.
Several v neck slouchy cashmere from Scott & Scott.
Cashmere biker cardigan from Wrap.
& Daughter thick cashmere long Cardi. Coat via Tk Maxx.
Cotton/Cashmere cardigans from Tk Maxx.
Cotton jumpers from Free People.
Linen jumpers from Wrap.
Cotton & Linen jumpers from Jigsaw.
2 cashmere cardigans from TurtleDoves.
Lightweight cashmere cardigan from Hope.

These are the ones I remember as my Winter stuff is mostly packed away.
Many are years old. I do try & debobble regularly.

Marghe87 · 30/08/2021 19:20

This thread has definitely made me want to buy much more, thanks! (Or not? Lol)

LaPampa · 30/08/2021 20:10

So many - I seem to add more every year but keep all the good ones for years too… pretty much all grey or navy or black but all different (some I have in multiple colours) - even Uniqlo cashmere lasts for years, I’ve some for a decade which have just gone through on the elbows which I’ve replaced with identical but kept the old one to patch. (When I get time, ha!)

DGFB · 30/08/2021 20:38

At least 70. But I wear them all.. winter goes on FOREVER

Marghe87 · 31/08/2021 19:56

@DGFB WOW! Are they all good quality or a bit of everything? How long have you had them for?

OP posts:
Pigtailsandall · 31/08/2021 20:08

I have 2 thin-knit long cardigans, green and navy, one very chunky grey one, one cocoon-style black one and a funky leopard print one.

Jumpers, a lot more. Mainly quite thin-knit silk/cotton blends. Two very big chunky ones. Maybe 6-7 mid-weight ones.

I'd love to invest in better ones but we have pesky moths and I dont fancy spending £300 on a jumper and then finding moth holes in it. My current ones are from Jigsaw, Whistles, Mint Velvet etc but I'd love to shop Brora, Toast etc
