Problems finding shoes that fit….Ugg slippers for work anyone?

I have been ordering and returning various types and sizes of loafers/moccasins for the last month and I am beyond fed up! I’ve tried wide shoes that have either been too wide or too narrow (from the same brand) and almost all haven’t come up my foot far enough.

I have wide feet with at least a half size difference between them. I had bunion surgery and I’m loath to stick my feet into anything that might cause issues in the long run.

At the moment I wear Adidas Supercourts a lot and Ansley Ugg slippers
when I’m at home. But I’m going back to school next week (teacher) and I need something other than two pairs of trainers to wear! We don’t have a dress code or rules.

I know i can order Ugg slippers and they’ll fit perfectly and are super comfy for driving etc (hour commute each way) but just want your thoughts on the following to wear as actually shoes (I thought I’d trim the fur a bit so they’re not as obviously slippers Smile ) Also I generally wear chinos, slim jeans, shirts, sleeveless shirts, casual blazers, cashmere jumpers, jumpers with unusual details etc and the slipper I have now go with everything!

I’d be looking to buy them in chestnut/brown and black.

Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully appreciated!

I wouldn’t be impressed if, after spending the money I have just spent on regulation black leather, no logo, size 10 school shoes, my child’s teacher came to school in furry mules.

PallasStrand · 29/08/2021 09:11

I think it would look as if you’d gone to work n your slippers by mistake, OP. Just how wide a fitting do you need — how wide is your wider foot?

PieceOfString · 29/08/2021 09:13

That would not give me a good impression to be honest, I would be wondering why a more professional attitude wasn't being presented in terms of dress. Pp assumed it up for me.
Can you visit a podiatrist and have them make an insert (or whatever podiatrist recommend) so you can buy a pair of shoes and the foot with the bunion can be accommodated that way

TakingTheLowRoad · 29/08/2021 09:18

@Mybalconyiscracking we don’t have the same seemingly ridiculous rules you have in the UK for school shoes in primary so I don’t think any of the parents would care.

@PallasStrand I tried on two pairs of G fitting shoes from the same company, one was too large the other was so tight I couldn’t get my foot in them!

It’s just I’m fed up ordering and returning shoes that I can’t wear. If I knew I could order a pair of suede/leather moccasins that would stretch a bit I could get away with a 5.5 and a day walking around the house to stretch them out.

Have you tried barefoot brands? They're usually softer and wider for a more natural feel

Whyarewehardofthinking · 29/08/2021 09:20

I'm SLT in a big secondary. We don't have a particularly strict dress code for staff, are massively flexible in extreme weather etc but if one of the members of staff I line manage turned up in those shoes without a specific doctors not I'd ask you to not wear them again. They can't be worn in a professional setting at all, unless you never leave your office.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2021 09:21

I struggle with shoe shopping, which is why I never shop for footwear online.

Can you set aside a day or half a day and go to your nearest town or shopping mall and try some shoes on in real shops?

Also, can I recommend Pavers shoes. There are Pavers concessions in some of the larger outlets. I have issues where my heels are narrower than the widest part of my foot, and most loafers are like flip flops on me but my Pavers ones aren't.

PieceOfString · 29/08/2021 09:22

Well it is your inescapable reality that your feet don't match so any matching shoes that are too rigid are going to be useless for you. So you are left with 2 choices, buy soft shoes or have some specially adapted.
You know your work place best, if you don't think it would raise eyebrows then do what suits your feet.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 29/08/2021 09:27

I think long term wearing slippers/Ugg’s is not supportive enough for your feet and can cause more damage

I’d wear trainers, Sketchers are very wide. Or men’s shoes or even soft hiking boots from brands that specialise in foot support such as Geox

Or visit an orthopaedic shoe shop

MoltonSilver · 29/08/2021 09:28

Is there a particular reason why you have to have suede moccasins when they're proving so uncomfortable? Perhaps there's another type of shoe you could try. The slippers really aren't appropriate.

Thanks for professional opinions.I work in a country school that is very relaxed in terms of dress so I don’t think they would cause too much outrage in the staff room but point taken re professional dress. I’ve spent all summer completing my masters dissertation and back to school has totally creeped up on me so I thought I’d save time shopping online -when will I learn?!

@RampantIvy I think I’ll have to that next weekend and muddle through this week.

@Beetlewing thanks for the suggestion, I’ll take a look

@PieceOfString thanks -you’re 100% correct on all counts

I have horribly wide feet, to the extent that the high street 'wide fit' fit is not big enough. As you wear Chinos/Slim fit Jeans have you thought about trying mens Brogues or Chelsea Boots? They would work well with the trousers and are a lot wider than women's fit. I have bought a couple of nice leather pairs of Brogues in TK Maxx before, where the mens shoes are right next to the womens, with the left and right shoe both on the shelf so you can help yourself to pairs to try on without needing staff to help you, if you wanted to try it.

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2021 09:44

Conker Shoes will make up a “pair” of different sized shoes and modify the width. See their measuring your feet page. They are not the most formal shoes in the world, but probably smart enough for your work setting.

Tronkmanton · 29/08/2021 10:43

Get some proper leather/suede shoes that fit width wise then get a cobbler to stretch them. I’ve done it with a couple of pairs of shoes/boots now that I would have returned/sold otherwise.

Just to update i managed to get to the shops today and bought these:

They go with everything I have and a definite improvement on the Uggs Grin
