And throw out/charity shop all the stuff that is bobbled, worn out, doesn’t fit or I never wear.

Pray for me I’m going to have no clothes left lol.

@Anothermountain

Happy retirement poolblue! Flowers
Thankyou! I certainly won't need as many clothes but do still want to make an effort and not fall into the jeans and sweatshirt combo every day.
dreamingofsun · 30/08/2021 09:35

you should take all the clothes to the charity shop instead of binning some. They send them off to make new fabric....much better for the environment and the charity also gains

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/08/2021 09:58

I did some of mine yesterday ( DH emptied my wardrobe to move it so the clothes were n the bed )
Some bagged up to go in the loft (summer clothes )
I have some holiday clothes ( swimwear/sarong./kimono) that will get put away for if I ever go on holiday again.

A bag for the charity shop filling up.

I wil go through socks/underwear . I am very strct with socks/bras when they are passed it they go out . Not just because socks with holes hurt and bras that get bumpy or saggy (or pokey wires) are nasty -but my Gran instilled into my Dad about decent underwear in case he ended up in hospital . (True)

I need some tunics and hopefullly a button up jersey shirt

it is theraputic Grin

How do you feel today .I'm.waiting for my f ex to leave the home.
Then I'll have an extra wardrobe to properly sort my clothing out .
Shouldn't be long
Well done

I think I am a one-off in that I have never had a big wardrobe cull. I am not the same size as I was at 40 (now 65) but only a little bit fatter and my style isn't very different so I wear most of the same clothes I like and just finesse my waistline.

Justilou1 · 31/08/2021 02:52

I am about to do (yet another) cull in the wardrobe. This time I am going to ensure that the bulk of it is proportionate to the climate I live in and the styles I am most comfortable and confidant wearing. There are so many great items there that I don’t use. I will either upcycle them into other things or donate to women’s charities. (Even though I live in a warm climate, winter clothing is very much needed for women on the streets or those living in cars. I have FAR too much of that, and it would make me genuinely happy to know that it is being used, rather than ending up being toxic landfill in Ghana - lots of news about this lately.) I will donate directly to a shelter that I know of, along with some lovely perfumes, shampoos and toiletries that have been sitting in my stash unopened. (This particular shelter only gives away mini-size items and samples, but keeps the full-sized things at the shelter for women to use prior to job interviews and court appointments, etc.)

I did similar after getting my colours done and discovering that I should never wear black 😂

From that point I started shopping only to fill the “holes” in my wardrobe - mostly dull basics, but that’s what you need to wear the exciting stuff.

One tip I took on board was never to buy stand alone pieces, but to buy an outfit (or things that work with the wardrobe you have). I had too many lovely clothes that were unworn because I didn’t have things to wear with them. It’s so obvious when it’s pointed out but I just didn’t understand until it was.

So I’d say you should take your red jacket and go shopping for whatever you need to make it wearable!

Miniroofbox · 31/08/2021 07:19

Thanks everyone. I wore the red jacket yesterday with black trousers and a cream blouse 😁.

I need:

A really warm puffa jacket

Shoes

A couple of nice jumpers for the winter.

And then I’m going to live with the wardrobe til the spring and then gut again based on what I’ve worn/like/suits me.

@Miniroofbox

Also. What’s “in” for autumn for a 50 year old apple?
Oh do tell!

I've packed away summer clothes (not even Sept Hmm) as it's so bloomin cold here in the SE

Ready to move to autumn right now!

Justilou1 · 31/08/2021 12:22

Let’s be totally honest… Nothing is really “IN” for women of our demographic. We’re almost getting there, but we’re not quite there. How about we rejoice in fact that we are more confident about what works for our body shape, what colours and styles we like, and don’t have to rely on other people telling us that we’re in or we’re out every two weeks??? Let’s just wear things that make us feel good and make us feel happy!!!

XingMing · 31/08/2021 21:04

@Justilou1, I think that sounds like really strong commonn sense and an opinion I am happy to second. By the time you reach our age, there are few designers with you as their customer front of mind. But we have the money and the opinions, and so we will find people who make clothes that work for us. I love Annette Goertz. Yes, it is spendy. It is made in Europe and well finished. Most of it is machine washable. And I wear her jeans especially until they fall apart. which means daily for four years.

frenchfancy55 · 31/08/2021 23:04

Be careful @StarfishDish - I did this after I had my first baby and did the most massive cull thinking I would never get my mojo back. I did (eventually!) and there is still stuff I regret passing on.
Perhaps put some of it in a box until you are feeling more confident? Good luck!
