why do people think wearing dresses....

means 'dressing up'?

I wear them for most things, I have fancy ones for fancy things and practical ones for everyday things, more solid, utilitarian ones for anything else - gardening, hypothetical dog walking with wellies, etc.

Im defo with the 'if monty don was a woman' fan club (a recent thread about clothes on here) Grin

Is it so odd to just throw on a longish raincoat over a dress, paired with some tough boots and get on with your day?

I never found jeans or trousers very comfortable and don't think they suit me much, so it's a non brainer, but it's strange how many people consider it dressing-up to just wear skirts/dresses. Usually I just throw one on and there's no fuss. I wear the same footwear with most of them (boots in winter, converse in summer or birks, and that's that. It's simple and comfy.

Perhaps when people call it fussy or over-dressing maybe they mean more tailored stuff or club wear?

Im not overly 'girly' either, in the sense that my boots are usually a bit rough and ready and my hair is all over the place. I think I just prefer the ease of dressing this way.

@babymooner

Poor Joules:) I think the whole 'dresses are dressed up' depends on the dress. But it's also about tights, for me. I hate tights. Not tights per se, but the way they dig in and create dents and rolls (and I am straight up and down pretty skinny). Summer dresses require weather warm enough to not wear anything underneath - which has been rare this summer (I feel the cold), and winter dresses need tights which don't look great and create wrinkles in anything vaguely fitted. Am realising as I type why i it that I rarely wear a dress;)
I wear heavier more winter appropriate styles for the cold weather but I don't mind tights. I find woolly ones lighter and less restricting than a jeans zip and button.

I think it depends on what we are comfy with, I hate anything thick near the waist on me, so something like high waisted paperbag trousers wouldn't work for me.

im in the north and have worn dresses all summer, it has been humid and more or less constantly warm here. Im really looking forward to wearing something with long sleeves again!

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 28/08/2021 16:02

I’d wear more dresses if I lost weight I used to and I have a few but lots like that hush dress I couldn’t it would be too long, I’m short so a midi would swamp me, I think if your tall yes you can get away with lots more dresses maxis and midi but it’s much harder to get a petite length maxi and a midi just doesn’t suit me at all.

I don’t find trousers jeans uncomfy though and just as easy to fling on. Just depends on your style really, I find just now everything is uncomfy and Ill fitting so that’s something I’m trying to change by losing weight I just want to enjoy getting dressed again and feeling good

Kintsugi16 · 28/08/2021 17:08

I agree. If I meet friends on my way to the local shops or for a walk I get “oooo - where have you been?”

It takes no more effort to put on a dress than anything else, easier in fact.

AlbertBridge · 28/08/2021 17:18

because (drum roll!) it makes them feel a soupçon less miserable about the futility of their lives.

Green anorak, purple skirt, men's socks, beret. My life doesn't have to be futile for that outfit to be hideous. 😆 I think, if you were totally honest, you admire her defiance rather than her style.

I think people are responding to the immature insults directed at this woman, her clothing is irrelevant. But I guess it makes some feel better, and if so, that pretty much smacks of something fussing their gusset, eh?

No, sixty.

How old are you?

orchidsonabudget · 28/08/2021 18:11

Where is this monty don thread??

Exactly that. I really wish it was obligatory for posters to add a photo of themselves when they deliver those comments. I bet we wouldn’t see many of them then.

I posted picture of myself, it would be immediately obvious that I am, old, overweight, and have absolutely no sense of style.

That is why I feel (over) qualified to comment. That “influencer” looks like a bag lady.

It's all about money, frankly. Because there are shedloads of kind people on S&B, who will point you to something approximate which won't exactly be perfect.

XingMing · 28/08/2021 21:01

@orchidsonabudgetid, there was a big thread recently about what the female version of Monty Don would wear in real life, filled with links and style notes. It was a happy thread where everyone coaxed with encouragement, not a bitchfest.

XingMing · 28/08/2021 21:04

But, at risk of getting fried alive, none of the clothing admired came from anywhere cheap.

Why? You don't need to be Miss World to be able to say 'That dress looks terrible'. It wouldn't be hypocritical if even the ugliest woman in the world -katiehopkins- said it.

I wasn’t thinking of people’s looks - after all none of us have any choice in that - more so we could all assess and comment on their style or lack thereof.
badg3r · 28/08/2021 21:19

I used to think dresses were fancy till I bought am amazing midi dress this summer. I wore it almost every day. So comfy, kept me a more constant temperature than trousers or shorts. I am a convert!

WeirdArchitecture · 28/08/2021 22:10

hahaha lets all laugh at other people, snurf snurf.

I prefer dresses over separates any time
Winter sweater or jersey dresses with thick tights and boots
Summer linen or cotton with sandals or trainers
I find dresses suitable for any occasion dressed up or down

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 04/09/2021 20:14

I don’t find dresses that comfy, I’ve just changed out of a T-shirt dress I was wearing as it’s been hot, into joggers and a tee.

I’d find it uncomfortable lounging about on the sofa with a dress pulling around my legs and riding up. Also can’t bear tights, which is the main reason I don’t wear dresses in winter, although I guess I should persevere to find some that fit well as I love the look, suggestions welcome!
