40s - anyone else realised that their make up suddenly doesn’t suit them anymore?!

I used to be a fan of a full face at work - eyeliner, foundation, blusher, the lot. But then I just looked in the mirror and the other day and realised it looked wrong, it looked heavy and ageing and really old fashioned.

This week I’ve just moved to Nars concealer for eyes, nose and chin, Rosalique as a base, a slick of mascara and and eyebrow gel, and my beloved Benetint for some colour - and I’m surprised I think I look better for it!

Anyone else had to suddenly change? What are you wearing as you get older?

I used to wear quite dark eye make up
In my 20s and much heavier foundation. Now in my 30s I wear every neutral colours. I still wear eyeliner but mid brown instead of black. Neutral brown tone eyeshadow and bb cream, as too much foundation cakes into fine lines.

@BangingOn… I really don’t see the point of faffing with spending $$$ on different formulas when I rarely wear these things. We can’t test anything here in Aus because of Covid, (health regs) and we can’t return it either. Trust me when I tell you that I have more than enough makeup and skincare to last a nuclear winter. I used to work in an industry where we were given a lot of freebies and discounts which I definitely took advantage of, but I much prefer Japanese & Korean skincare - so have enough of that in my stash to give yeststyle a run for it’s money too. Especially sunscreens, which I have been religious about using since I was a teenager. (V. Important in this climate!) Might just be waiting on rather large box of Rohto Melano Premium Vitamin C Serum atm, and some bits for my kids as well. (Plus some sun sticks for their schoolbags.)

You need to update make up
Annually.
Also get any fuzz dermaplaned

BangingOn · 31/08/2021 07:37

@Justilou1 fair enough, I only suggest it as it sounded like you wanted to try.

chaosmaker · 31/08/2021 07:56

I bet that none of you need all that gunk on your face. Is it habit cos you've always worn it? I've always hated anything on my skin and on the rare occasions I wear anything it's my same 80's red lipstick Eyeliner and maybe but not likely mascara. As I don't wear it usually it does look very different when I bother. Also not a money sink for me Grin

TangledTrees · 31/08/2021 08:18

I’ve had to ditch the eyeliner, it was looking really ageing.

I once read that the average woman spends the equivalent of a small house on cosmetics/ make up during her life. Really made me rethink if I needed / wanted another lipstick whereas that money could have gone into my savings.
WeAreTheHeroes · 31/08/2021 10:13

@chaosmaker - just because you don't like things doesn't make them gunk. I have rosacea and believe me a good, light base makes all the difference to how my skin looks.

Carboncheque · 31/08/2021 10:20

I never wear red lipstick. I feel like a painted clown in really strong lip colour. I stick to sheer, close to natural colours. We all wear what we’re comfortable with.

Your medal’s in the mail @chaosmaker

Full face doesn’t suit anyone in RL not even young ppl. It’s only meant for on-camera style not real life. If you have bad skin then investing in longer term skincare fixes is a much wiser move then dropping £££ on makeup every year.

What for? I'm not having a go, quite the opposite. Although I see men have now also been sucked into the 'beauty' stuff.

*disclaimer- didn't realise which section this post was under. It just came up on topics to look at

Justilou1 · 31/08/2021 19:40

Sorry @chaosmaker! It felt like a go. There was one up thread too

chaosmaker · 31/08/2021 20:10

@Justilou1 I meant women are beautiful without it all :) Although I'm usually scruffy and unkempt in general :D

Metabigot · 31/08/2021 20:18

@ethelredonagoodday

Yes similar. I'm 43. It's foundation I'm really struggling with. It sits heavily on my skin. My skin is generally quite good, few wrinkles and pores starting to look a bit more noticeable, but the foundations I've tried of late seem to make this even more noticeable!

Any tips gladly received!

I've stopped using foundation. I use really good skincare products (dermalogica) then a bit of primer and tinted serum/ tinted moisturiser.

Foundation feels way too heavy these days

Justilou1 · 31/08/2021 20:20

Well the beauty stuff exists because we like it, I guess. It helps us present ourselves to the world each day feeling good.

Those of us with less than perfect skin do both. I use prescription medication for my rosacea and make up to make me look less like Aunt Sally and to help me feel more confident. Since when was dropping synonymous with buying? I must be getting old.
ufucoffee · 01/09/2021 07:50

Ive become a big fan of Estée Lauder futurist hydra rescue foundation. I'm not a fan of bb creams etc. My skin isn't good enough, I like a bit of coverage. This foundation is not heavy, one blob does my whole face and it feels really light.

ActonSquirrel · 01/09/2021 07:56

Not their yet but I stopped wearing foundation in my early 30s. Its horrible.

I've used tinted moisturiser since then. Laura Mercier or Nars.

I usually go to the gym on Saturday morning with no make up on and once when I went after work still with my tinted moisturiser, a gym friend of mine remarked on how flawless my face looked so it does work as you can build the coverage with it.

I don't wear eye shadows and liners as I think the constant applying and removing is terrible for the delicate skin around the eyes.

StormBaby · 01/09/2021 08:00

The only change I have made is that I can only wear matte eyeshadow now, anything sparkly and I just look ridiculous

pollyroo · 01/09/2021 08:18

Almost 42 here .... Exfoliate exfoliate & exfoliate is your friend in your 40's : )
I use a combination of chemical exfoliates plus a scrub for when my face needs a deep clean, I don't use both exfoliates at the same time though.
I pride my skin being better now than in my 20's! I also take a Marine collagen supplement & I make sure my diet is relatively healthy & hydrated with lots of good fats. I think diet shows in regards to skin.

grey12 · 01/09/2021 08:23

Maybe check the videos for Lisa Eldridge doing make for mature skin Wink

I love this foundation, my skin is quite dry from using retinol and it goes on beautifully
Divebar2021 · 01/09/2021 08:51

I’m 51 and probably wear a lot of products but in a light way. Very light tinted moisturiser ( or Skin tint from Glossier which is even lighter) with concealer for skin. Creamy or gel blushers. I love the eye shadow pencils from Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier in quite natural tones that can be used as an eyeliner too. My mascara is really lengthening and defining but doesn’t add volume. For lip colours I avoid matt colours. I do wear red in the evening but everything else would be pared back. My favourite brands are Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Hourglass & Glossier.
