I too have noticed that the world and their husband seem to be head to toe in this year's clothes. I buy reasonable quality stuff - i wear it for years and I think I manage to look kind of fashionable. in a classicy sort of way (but have been wondering recently if I am sadly deluded)

the other day someone complemented me on my coat: Jigsaw c. 1999. ditto a jumper I wore the other day that dh said look nice - jigsaw c. 1998. I went to a party recently and got compliments about my black skirt with frily edge and scoop-neck top to match - Liz Clairborne 2000. My suit (the only one I own) which I still really like is also from 2000

I have tonnes of clothes of this sort of age. and older. - not scruffs relegated to sunday morning slobbing - nice stuff that I still think looks good. am I deluded? am I in fact a frump? or a very boring dresser?

what about you?

I have a lovely Episode suit from 1999 and a fantastic 'New Look' (Dior not the shop!) style grey jacket from.......1951.

Maidamess · 01/12/2007 20:49

I bought a satiny stretch pencil skirt in H&M about 10 years ago, if not more. I wore it to a dinner dance last night (granted, these days I need magic knickers underneath). But it was a fiver!!

Camillathechicken · 01/12/2007 20:51

a pair of very expensive knitted Dior tights i conned my dad into buying for me 12 years ago when i was a sjoodent. they have lasted well ! mostly becasue i wear them so rarely !

at moondog's jacket !

rantinghousewife · 01/12/2007 20:54

My entire wardrobe is either handmade or second hand. The oldest thing that was bought from new is probably a Mary Quant high neck black mini dress, that I bought from my mums catalogue when I was 18. It still fits and looks rather good. Needs control pants nowadays though.

joyfulspike · 01/12/2007 20:55

I've got a lbd which was my mum's, she bought it in the 60's and everyone thinks I've gone retro!

The oldest thing I bought which I still wear is my leather jacket its over 20 years and still going strong!

moondog · 01/12/2007 20:56

Oooh Camilla, it is lovely.Given to me by my grandmother's neighbour. It was part of her first ever work suit.

I long ago realised that 'vintage' just means old or second hand.
Thus have a wardrobe full of vintage items.

Camillathechicken · 01/12/2007 20:59

i had a few bits from my great aunt, that sadly i am too hefty to fit into now, including the most elegant coat.

women were a different build 60 years ago i think !!

my mum has a burberry mac, from before burberry was everywhere, and i have my eye on that.....

joyfulspike · 01/12/2007 20:59

Why do ppl feel the need to wear all the latest things? I've got a mate in work who throws away pretty much her whole wardrobe each year and replaces it all with brand new! Very wasteful! Sorry to go off the point there

moondog · 01/12/2007 21:01

No Spike, that is precisely the point.
I favour a few nice things than a wardrobe full of disposables.
Clothes are so bloody cheap now though compared to when I were a lass!

Camillathechicken · 01/12/2007 21:02

if you buy high fashion stuff then you feel obliged to keep up, i tend to buy classics, and buy good accesories and the odd trendy thing.

rantinghousewife · 01/12/2007 21:07

Camilla, true style NEVER looks dated, looking like a fashion victim does.
I am betting you never look dated.
Trendy

moondog · 01/12/2007 21:07

I would say 'trendy'.
MIL said 'with it' which I loved!

francagoestohollywood · 01/12/2007 21:08

I still wear my mum's burberry raincoat (early 80s). I also wear coats for at least 5 yrs in a row.

Camillathechicken · 01/12/2007 21:09

thing is, if you hang onto everything , it always comes back into vogue !

although i am not sure my glittery platform trainers circa spice girls 1995 will ever see the light of day again

joyfulspike · 01/12/2007 21:10

I've heard "cool" quite a lot, so am using that again - oh god I'm old enough to remember using it the first time (sob)

Camillathechicken · 01/12/2007 21:10

hey it's groovy, hepcats !

moondog · 01/12/2007 21:11

I say 'far out'
(It used to be ironic but now not so sure.)

rantinghousewife · 01/12/2007 21:11

Joyful, they don't say cool now, it's mint innit? I kid you not.

southeastastra · 01/12/2007 21:13

some lovely leather boots and an old baseball jacket from 1986

Othersideofthechannel · 01/12/2007 21:14

I have just given away a pair of French connection shorts that I had owned for 17 years.

Othersideofthechannel · 01/12/2007 21:15

I'd say a third of my wardrobe was bought last century.

moondog · 01/12/2007 21:16

Mint?
Really?
I will try it out on hip 19 year old babysitter and watch her cringe.

rantinghousewife · 01/12/2007 21:17

Ah see, I am the owner of a 14 year old, he talks properly to us but, I overhear the conversations with friends. Mint innit, WTF!

pukkapatch · 01/12/2007 21:19

my problem is ther pregnancies weigth gains, weight losses and weight gains and weight losses again in the past few years.

i have an aquascutum coat of mom's from the seventies that i have worn a lot around 2001 2002.otherewise, stuff from the early late 90's i gave to the charity shops becasue of wight issues. if i didnt have those, then yes, i would wear them again and again.
i have lots of really dressy sari's. doe they count?

FrayedKnot · 01/12/2007 21:20

The problem I have is changing dress size every year or two...

I am now back to size 12 having got rid of all my size 12 stuff years ago and moving up thorugh 14 then 16 then 14 again with a brief foray into 12 just after DS was born and I was on a low fat diet due to gallstones and was b/f too.

So....currently I am wearing jeans which I bought when DS was newborn (from Tesco, had to go out and get them urgently as no trousers fitted), they are therefore 3.8 years old, and I think they are probably the oldest thing I regularly wear. I have evening stuff from the late '90s onwards, but don;t wear that often!

I did recently get rid of some trousers that dated from around 2000 because the cut seemed really odd. I think I have got used to low waisted and skinnier leg shapes.
