So, can I put patches on all the trousers my DS has worn through the knees or not? What do ya think?

He's four. He's a boy. As would be expected he wears holes in his trousers and jeans pretty quickly.

In the summer I just let him wear the holey trousers, but now it's colder I'm thinking of sewing patches on them, will this look naff or is it acceptable?

Some of his trousers are good quality with plenty of wear still in them, all cords or jeans, so don't want to buy new ones or look neglectful for letting him wear holey ones in winter, what do others think and do?

(I'm loathe to buy new ones though...they too will only end up with holes in them grrrrrr)

no prob and at 4 they dont bother about trendyness do they.

mine s 4 and he doesnt have holey stuff, wonder why becuase he is very rough boy.
he lives in trachy bottoms £2 per pair from primark.

I need to do the same (DS is almost 4 - must be the age) - bought a few iron on patches of tractors, racing cars and fire engines from our local haberdashery. Just need to get round to doing it.

I have always patched my son's jeans and he is eleven now. He is a long-haired scruffy dude though.

The only problem is that I get asked to do all his friends' jeans as well. My sewing machine is always out.

Pannacotta · 01/12/2007 16:34

What kind of patches do you use malovitt, are they very funky?
As a mother of two boys I feel that I may need to learn the art of patching too!!

And yes I think its fine to put patches on trousers rather than buy new, think it looks v sweet in fact.

OverMyDeadStuffedTurkey · 01/12/2007 16:38

yeah malovit, what kind of patches?

I Have lots of scraps of material to choose from, and was thinking of going round the edges in an embroidery stitch wiht a contrasting colour thread, does that sound ok?

I suppose it depends on how old the boys are. I think funky patches with embroidery would be ok on younger kids.

I keep jeans that are too far gone to save, and cut them up for patches, using a small zig-zag stitch. My boys will only wear those Gap carpenter jeans with loads of pockets, therefore the patches don't stand out too much.

My neighbour told me she caught her 7 year old deliberately making a hole in the knee of his jeans so that I would patch them for him, so he could be the same as my son, whom he looks up to.
Ahhhh..

I always patch ds's trousers with iron on patches, as jeans only last about 3 or 4 weeks in our household before they go holey otherwise.

Looks quite cool if you get good denim patches....

Pannacotta · 03/12/2007 22:34

Where can you get decent denim patches though? Have only found slightly "Good Life" style one!!

malovitt · 04/12/2007 08:35

Just cut a square out of an old pair of jeans and cover the hole.
If I'm running short of denim I buy cheap old jeans from boot sales or charity shops. You don't need to buy special patches, aren't they expensive?

hoarsewhisperer · 04/12/2007 08:39

NO - I DON'T THINK SO. i just go to the wee sewing shop in teh village and ask for iron on patches - they are about a pound for a pair i think.

alternatively you can buy them online at amazon www.amazon.com/Dritz-Denim-Iron-Patches-Lite/dp/B000A88M6Q....gets you 4 patches, so 2 sets.
