Adult braces

Hi,
Would appreciate some advice please.
I’m seriously considering getting adult braces as I’ve become more paranoid of my crossing teeth. The top front two cross slightly and the bottom ones have moved and now cross a bit too.
I’ve read loads about Invisalign but wondered which type offer the quickest results? I also wondered what the ball park cost would be?
Thanks in advance. Grin

I had full-on train tracks in my 40s. Cost about 3.5k but was worth it. Fixing your teeth is more effective than all the botox and fillers in the world! I look 100 times better.

I’ve got a consultation for Invisalign with an orthodontist next week. There are two types, Invisalign and Invisalign Lite. The Lite version is a bit cheaper and takes less time (fewer tray changes), it’s meant for less complicated cases. I think lite costs from £2k and the full one from £3k but that’s a basic starting cost (minimum no of trays, only one arch, no attachments etc). It will cost much more if you have a complex case, need medium or longer treatment, need upper and lower arch correction, need attachments. Plus there’s the cost of things like retainers to keep things in place once your treatment is in place. Treatment is custom so prices vary. You might get it slightly cheaper from a dentist rather than an orthodontist but I’d go with an orthodontist as they are the experts in moving teeth. I’d expect around £4k. I’m actually budgeting £5k for mine, to include retainers and post treatment whitening.

About 2.5k for mine 8 years ago, fixed uppers.

Just to add, I then had a new crown to an upper tooth then 3 teeth at the top I had composite bonding on (£99 per tooth) to square them up and make them look every/brighter

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 24/08/2021 12:03

They look beautiful @Monkeytapper

I had my front tooth straightened recently. There isn't a dentist near me who does invisaline so I went for the white train tracks method.
All in it took about 2 months give or take a week which an aquantance having invisalyne told me is quick.
Total cost inc having my teeth levelled along the bottom and polished was £2,00 which I think is eye waveringly expensive but I don't regret a thing. I'm really chuffed with the result.

ShellyShore · 24/08/2021 12:08

Forgot to say that price inc a night time retainer

ShellyShore · 24/08/2021 12:10

Your teeth look fantastic @Monkeytapper.

TallulahBetty · 24/08/2021 13:17

I did, I had traintracks, cost 4k but THE BEST money I have ever spent. To be able to smile freely is seriously underrated

SnarkyBag · 24/08/2021 13:34

Am about to have braces (fixed) was told Invisalign wouldn’t be as effective and would take a lot longer. Will also be having composite bonding done at the end and a crown. About £6K.
I’ve spoken to a couple of people who did Invisalign and interestingly both said they wish they’d gone for tracks in the end as there is an element of faff to having Invisalign e.g removing them to eat and having to brush teeth and clean the moulds before putting them back in. Dentist also said that there is the risk that people won’t wear them for enough hours a day which will slow progress.

I'm about to start with invisalign to straighten top and bottom teeth (moderately complex case). It's costing £3,400 for everything including any additional trays if needed. I need my teeth filing, trays for around 9 months and retainers afterwards. The costs have been really clear, no hidden costs unless I want any bonding or fixed retainers at the end.

I've also got a 3D model that shows exactly how my teeth will change with each tray, it's ace!

bizboz · 24/08/2021 18:23

You need to discuss with an orthodontist ideally. I spent forever going around various cosmetic dentists and was offered everything from Invisalign to Six month smiles to something called Fast braces (fixed braces that they said would straighten my teeth in 10 weeks). Some dentists said Invisalign would work for me but would take ages, some said Invisalign wasn't suitable for me. Eventually I went to the orthodontist and I felt more confident with their knowledge. I'm about to get fixed braces for 12-18 months on my upper and lower jaws. It's costing me 3.9k but I am paying extra for the tooth-coloured ceramics, although it may be a waste of money paying for that!

Zinfandelli · 24/08/2021 18:49

Mine were about £3800, all costs included. I had 4 extractions and 20 months of fixed braces, and now two bonded retaining wires and clear removable retainers to wear at night. My braces were Damon clear, which are ceramic/clear brackets on the front teeth. Slightly more expensive than traditional all-metal but a bit less noticeable. Supposedly a shorter treatment time too but covid meant there was a bit of a delay removing them.

Agree with pp re: seeing an orthodontist for a consultation. My regular dentist suggested Invisilign for me but the orthodontist explained that it's no good for severe overcrowding.

A friend had Invisilign around the same time and eating & drinking was a faff for her. The brackets are sort of visible, although not so noticeable as the metal types.

atracurious · 24/08/2021 19:49

I have Invisalign at the moment. As I just need to straighten one very wonky tooth on one jaw, it's been £1250 and takes 14 weeks to correct.this includes the retainers and all appointments etc

I've been so pleased with it so far although I'm only 3 out of 7 trays in and I'm dying to see the end result! Squeezing the appointments in at my practice has been hard as I work long hours but I've only needed one appointment during the 14 weeks which has helped.

umberellaonesie · 24/08/2021 19:55

I had traditional train tracks in my 30s
I had teeth removed, a block for high pallet, and top and bottom tracks.
Cost 3500 and took 5 years but that was as we were trying to improve my bite. The plan was for jaw surgery once teeth were aligned. But in the end wasn't necessary I got good movement from the braces alone.

littlespeckledfrog · 25/08/2021 21:16

I'm on my last of 17 Invisalign trays and am really pleased with the results. My front top teeth had crossed over too and I had a bottom tooth that stuck out. They are lovely and straight now. It is slightly sore when you change trays and eating and drinking is more of a faff but I've found it fine on the whole, definitely worth it!

penguinwithasuitcase · 25/08/2021 21:24

My train tracks come off next week after 2 years! (I'm 34)

I wasn't a candidate for Invisalign –my ortho said many of her patients push for it as a more 'attractive' option, but in some cases the speed at which it moves your teeth can make the bone weak and you'll either lose your teeth sooner or they'll return to bad alignment. Plus everything PPs have said about the faff (although brushing and flossing with fixed Damons has been quite the faff too, to be fair!)

I've oddly loved having my braces and there's a chance I'll miss them when they're off BUT I'm also so proud of having taken the step to sort my teeth out.

I'm not in the UK and my insurance covered some of the cost, but all in I'll have paid the equivalent of £2900 for it.

Windingroad21 · 25/08/2021 21:42

Starting my journey tomorrow … quoted £4.6k for Invisalign with an Ortho that did DP teeth which are beautiful IMO

Went for Invisalign to fix moderate crowding and an overbite and 8 months in my teeth are super straight . It's been a bit of a faff but the time span has been so short and it's well worth the results and the fact that they are not noticeable to anyone else , in fact they make my teeth look better when they're on ! 5k

Adult braces seem to be very popular last many months. Many of my friends and colleagues have had them recently. I am in banking and we do a lot of zoom calls - I imagine they all want to look good during the calls :))

I work in the City and two of my team mates have taken up Invisalign braces treatment from a local cosmetic dentist in London Waterloo called Whites Dental. Both my colleagues are about 4 months into the treatment and seem to have good things to say about Invisalign and also Whites Dental. Infact, I am giving some thought to braces for adults as well. I dont think I have the patience to spend a year wearing braces, so am considering composite bonding as an alternative. I only have 2 teeth I dont like the look of. Had my consultation with Whites in Nov with Dr Kiren - she was really informative and showed my lots of examples of what my teeth could look like after treatment, although seemed very busy (perhaps lots of patients wanting to do their teeth?) - been given a date in end Jan to take up composite bonding with her - she couldnt fit me in sooner. Am just hoping the appointment doesn't get cancelled due to the impending lockdown we may have in Jan. Happy to provide feedback on whether composite bonding was as good as braces.

Broadly speaking, I thought she was really good. If anyone in the City is looking for a cosmetic dentist - will recommend her. She works at Whites Dental - link below.

Will provide an update in end Jan/early Feb.
