Black dress for toddler?

Hi everyone, looking for a bit of advice on a bit of a sensitive subject I'm afraid.
My sister sadly passed away this week and we're looking for an outfit appropriate for her little girl, 12-18 months.
Does anyone have any ideas please?

So sorry to hear of your loss Flowers Poor little mite.

Maybe something in a dark floral like [[https://www.gap.co.uk/gap/toddler-tiered-ruffle-neck-dress-/000727491.html?dwvar_000727491_color=000727491000&dwvar_000727491_fit=regular&cgid=TG-dresses-dressy#start=4&nav=hamnav%3AToddler%3AToddler+Girl%3ADresses+ this] ?

So subdued but not too solid and overwhelming.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your sister Flowers

With your niece being so young, does she have to wear all black? Next have some lovely little dresses which are either checkered or floral with black as a main colour, so that maybe a good place to look.

PostMenPatWithACat · 23/08/2021 22:32

Some purple/lilac/grey?

Moonswimmer · 23/08/2021 22:33

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss.

If you do particularly need the dress to be all black, an easy option might be to buy a plain cotton dress and dye it with Dylon.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/08/2021 22:35

Oh my, how sad.

This charcoal one from Next is lovely or go for plain white.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The black options posted are nice but as an alternative, did your sister have a favourite outfit that she liked to dress her daughter in? Could she wear something special that mummy bought her?

The4ks · 23/08/2021 22:38

Thank you all for suggestions so far.
I do kind of agree though, shouldn't probably be all black.

@AphroditeGoddessOfLove
That's a nice idea actually thank you. She was quite particular about how she was dressed so we're worried about getting it wrong.

At the funerals I've been to, small children haven't typically been in all black (or black at all) - they have been smart though. DD wore her navy party dress with flowers on to my DGM's funeral, as an example.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/08/2021 22:54

DSs had been to a few funerals before they were school age. I just dressed them in their smartest plainest outfit. DHs cousin rocked up with his 5 year old in a black suit, it looked a bit odd.

Very sorry for your loss OP. Something like this might be suitable, formal and dark but not black.

AelgenVsPreDator · 23/08/2021 23:24

Or if you wanted black

Tempusfudgeit · 23/08/2021 23:34

So sorry for your loss, OP. I was given this yesterday but it won't fit my daughter. Could you use it at all? I'm happy to post it straight out to you.

Black dress for toddler?
SirVixofVixHall · 23/08/2021 23:44

I am so very sorry OP.
My dd went to a family funeral at this age and wore a white dress that had a little grey ribbon round the chest, a black cardigan and black shoes.
Sadly my dds have been to a lot of funerals and when they were smaller they often wore white or grey with a grey or black cardigan. I think anything that isn’t colourful is fine. For my father’s funeral when they were 5 and 7, they wore pale grey, and for my Mother’s funeral my eldest wore a black dress with a small floral print and the younger grey.
In reality nobody will mind at all what your little niece wears, but for me it was important how my dds looked for these funerals, so it may also be for you.
Flowers .

Fauvist · 23/08/2021 23:53

On a similar note to what a PP said, if there isn't a particular favourite outfit that your sister liked your niece in, did your sister have a favourite colour? That might be an easier option for a dress for the little girl.

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

marbleborough · 23/08/2021 23:54

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Waterlillies or lotus flowers like on this dress mean regeneration or rebirth and it is dark, like you are looking for

@tempusfudgeit Thank you so much for you're kind offer, that's so lovely of you.
That dress actually looks absolutely perfect, my sister would've liked that. I think it might be too big for my niece though, does it say 2 -3?

gogohm · 24/08/2021 09:20

Purple is the traditional colour for younger girls to wear but I think anything in muted or pastel colours is fine - personally I would avoid bright primary colours and big pictures/logos. My dd was with me at a funeral when she was very young, I had her in a white dress with navy blue trims

gogohm · 24/08/2021 09:29

But please don't worry about it, she's a baby, a pretty dress is just perfect in any colour. So sorry for your loss and so sorry for herThanks

The4ks · 24/08/2021 11:55

@ArchbishopOfBanterbury Thank you we've went with your suggestion of the gap one. With a light coloured cardi I think.
Thanks to everyone for they're kind words.

My daughter is 20 months and I know it's too small for her, so it may fit. PM with your address and I'll get it in the post 🙂
