Clueless about hair colour - balayage issue

I'm a bit clueless about hair colouring at the hairdressers. Up until my last appointment I only ever coloured my own hair, which is naturally brown with a tendency to be reddy/orangey at the ends.

Over summer I had balayage at the hairdressers, I love the lighter colour which looks nice against my skin tone however I had mentioned to the hairdresser about my orangey ends assuming she would do something to even up the colour before the balagyage (yes I should have been more clear with her!) but she just did the balayage.

I've now got brown roots, blending to a caramel at the bottom but there is also a fair amount of orange still in the ends. It looks ok but I'm just wondering what to do next time I go. Do I need to cut it short and start again? I don't want to dye it darker but I don't think the ends could take anymore bleach! Should she have dyed my all of my hair to a uniform brown then done the bleach?

Also I keep saying balayage which is what I paid for and the hairdresser called it but I thought balayage was more of a free hand technique whereas it seemed like she just did standard highlighting technique (back-coming and foiling) just lower down that typical highlights.

I think some hair stylists do free paint the balayage but some do the back combing. I think a mixture of both looks best. I don’t think she should have dyed it brown first though….. if your ends are orange then maybe a toner to take out any brassiness would have been called for? Maybe change hairdressers, find one with an Instagram account with lots of photos of the style you are after and show them a photo of what you want xx

I also recommend you use the fudge purple shampoo every few days to stop bleach getting orange.

Thanks @dogoodfeelgood, I was more bothered about the back combing just because I have a lot of hair and it's a full on nightmare to comb out! I've just used the Charles Worthington purple shampoo which has worked a bit as it was going a bit brassy but I might try the Fudge.

I've been searching for a good hairdresser and the only one I've found that looks brilliant isn't taking any more clients...if anyone has any recommendations for Newcastle I'm all ears!
