Do you keep all your clothes?

Or do you "cull" regularly? Say if you were to see a photo of yourself from a night in 2012 are you likely to still have the dress or is it more likely to have gone?
I think I've culled too much and regretting it!

I have some that are 20 years old, some I cull after a year.

It depends how well they wear, Most of the older things were expensive. Quality definitely pays,

lindyloo57 · 23/08/2021 21:05

Its true about summer clothing stay around much longer, as in this country it doesn't get so much wear when I look at holiday photos from abroad some items I have had a few years but still look OK, infact I make sure I buy some new things when going away, if not I will be wearing mostly the same clothes in the photos.

shinynewapple21 · 23/08/2021 22:25

I only have a few clothes left I wore in 2012 - a drawer of summer clothing I can't get into and a couple of jumpers that were really baggy when I first bought them .

I'm a couple of sizes larger than I was in 2012 - and have also lost and regained weight a couple of times since then .

I tend to throw stuff out if I've gone maybe 2 years without wearing it.

Bertiebiscuit · 24/08/2021 18:31

If I haven't worn something for a year I consider giving it to the charity shop if I can't think of a way of making it better so that I do wear it - but I hang things up that I'm considering culling and give myself quite a long time to reconsider, maybe trying it in a way that I hadn't worn it before, or altering it etc etc - it's easy to cull quickly and regret it, as I don't have much budget for clothes

I definitely keep some. I have a lovely jacket I bought from GAP soon after I first moved to London in 2004. Smile It's that one from the Sarah Jessica Parker adverts and still looks lovely.

My lifestyle is a bit different than it was 10 years ago, and I've also changed size between 8 and 14 during those years, so some things have been donated to charity and sold on during that time. I try to buy things I'd want to wear for years though and my style is quite "settled" now, I don't really follow trends and buy what I love and what suits me.

But my mum and grandma both kept lots of their clothes and I loved getting to wear them in my teens - great vintage finds right there in my grandma's closet!

I had a jigsaw dress that I bought around 2010, it was the best dress ever. It was a little beach dress but also special enough to go to a Michelin star restaurant. Could be washed in washing machine, no ironing, beautiful green blue pattern. Scrunch it up in a suitcase, shake it out and wear it.

I wear it in at least 1 photo every holiday I took in the last 10 yrs Grin So last year I chucked it out Sad

I regretted it. Found it’s red-pink sister on eBay. Now will wear that for the next 10 years Grin

I still have stuff from 20 years ago, but only silk/cashmere/party dresses (I only have about 1 party a year that requires proper dress Grin)

I have wool coats that I’ve had for a decade, they really don’t date as they are a classic style. Cashmere and merino jumpers also don’t date so I invest in those, ditto the odd trench coat. Some things are classics

lindyloo57 · 24/08/2021 19:32

I have a summer dress thats in at least one holiday photo every year, I brought it at wearhouse it was £45.
At that time it seemed expensive around 15 years ago, its made of cotton a black strapless with a little beading at the front, It seems a little short now I am older 61, but I still will wear it when abroad,

kennycat · 24/08/2021 20:54

Generally I operate a ‘one in one out’ system with clothes. But I’ve lost count of how many denim jackets, knee boots I’ve bought and got rid of during a cull. Annoying!!

Mid30smidlifecrisis · 25/08/2021 17:43

Cull. I loved my clothes in 2012, I had only charity shop finds (but quality fabrics, an actual outfit with beloved accessories and shoes), I loooved my style as it was then. Now, I am mainly practical, as I am in the small people/sticky hands phase of life. Think monochrome, jeggings (yes, I know) and clothes that wash well.

I find if my wardrobe was full of my old clothes I'd feel more sad about it? But yes it does tug at my heart strings remembering some items.

MelbourneTerrace · 26/08/2021 08:29

I just want to see your perfect summer dress @MarleneDietrichsSmile ...sounds like something I need. 😊

ExConstance · 26/08/2021 08:41

I have a big clear out in the autumn and ebay the good stuff I no longer wear. I use the proceeds to put towards one item that is more expensive than I would usually buy, perhaps cashmere. The less saleable stuff, which is still in very good condition, goes to the local hospice shop, and anything else to the clothing recycling bin at Tesco.
I have a lot of items that are very old I think the sweatshirt that predates birth of DS1 (he is 30) is the oldest, I wore it to walk the dog this morning. I also have a Brora tweed pinafore dress that I got in around 2008, straight shift style, and I wear that every winter I can fit into it.

BringBackThinEyebrows · 26/08/2021 10:02

I love a good declutter. I do still have some clothes from 10 years ago although it's mostly stuff from the past 4 years. No regrets about giving/throwing any items away.

Scarby9 · 26/08/2021 10:11

I keep what I wear, so I have some things from 10 or 20 years ago, but they are still current - some tops, a couple of dresses, fleeces etc.
If it doesn't fit, or I don't wear it, it's out.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/08/2021 10:12

I keep my good quality stuff. Most of it are classics that never really go out of style, and the rest will come back around at some point.

I'm trying to get better at "culling" stuff that's obviously cheap or worn out or that frankly I never really liked. I realised during lockdown that I had a bad habit of wearing cheap, old clothes most the time because I was saving my nice clothes "for best" - lockdown made me realise that "best" may never come, so I should wear the things that make me feel good for that reason and no other!

ADreadedSunnyDay · 26/08/2021 10:46

I culled a lot of really nice Hobbs, LK Bennet and the like after I had DS. I could no longer fit into it and I realised that even if I lost all the weight (unlikely) my body shape had changed. My friend's advice 'dress for the life you have, not the lifestyle you think you ought to have' resonated as I also realised that I needed stuff that could go in the washing machine and I could crawl on the floor wearing rather than beautiful pencil dresses that were dry clean only. Raised a lot of money for the local charity shop though.
