If I'm in my 30s but don't earn Megabucks, where should I buy clothes?

Beginning to outgrow H and M, but not their prices.... Where else can I shop? TIA

I mainly shop at Arket, Cos and Uniqlo. But only in the sale usually. Zara for going out stuff, mango also pretty good. Again, I use the Mango Outlet website instead of the main one. Massimo Dutti also very good for day to day smarter things.

T-shirt's are always Arket - so comfy and wash well. Current jeans love are a pair of Acne Studio second hand on Vestiaire.

WiggIyWoo · 22/08/2021 22:15

@Guineapigbridge

Buy high quality secondhand on eBay or similar. Cheap clothes are a false economy not to mention bad for the planet.
I buy nearly all my children's clothes second hand but buying say a pair of jeans, I'd try on maybe 10 pairs in shops before I found some that fit because I'm not perfectly proportioned. Do people really manage to buy most of their clothes off ebay (esp fitted things, not just floaty dresses)?
TowelStripes · 22/08/2021 22:26

Vinted! I've got some great jigsaw, Topshop and whistles stuff for dirt cheap. Lasts really well. You do have to be committed to checking regularly for bargains though.

Fleetw00d · 22/08/2021 22:38

Asos, if you can be bothered to scroll through the 1000s of items.
I used to love Zara but since covid I've not been to their shops and like you hate the website. Mango I think have the same owner (as Zara h&M and Bershka I think..) and have found their stuff to be more 'staple.' Bershka have their moments too!
New look is always pretty solid for me!

My friend has got some great quality pieces from charity shops, pick ones in more affluent areas as the pieces can be high quality high street (mint velvet, reiss etc) and at the moment they are overrun with clothes from everyone having a sort out. Oh and British heart foundation shops have a deal either Zara so there's often loads of old season Zara pieces in there!

Abcdefg22220 · 22/08/2021 22:43

Monki is great and you can get it on ASOS

Guineapigbridge · 22/08/2021 22:48

@wigglywoo I save favourite sellers that have similar proportions and taste as me. I'm also pretty specific about the brands I'll buy so I know, for example, that I won't be disappointed with cheap fabrics that looked good in a photo but are thin and shiny IRL.
Your comment is totally warranted, though, jeans I wouldn't try and buy secondhand or online at all really. Too hard to guess proportions.

Guineapigbridge · 22/08/2021 22:49

Nothing you buy from ASOS will last past a couple of washes. Cheap junk clothing.

Oliveandsage · 22/08/2021 23:02

Monki is great - I’m 30 and buy loads from there, find the clothes wash well too!

Mateypotatey · 22/08/2021 23:03

I actually have loved Asda underwear recently, so good for the price

Fleetw00d · 23/08/2021 08:48

@Guineapigbridge asos sell lots of brands though which can be good even if you dont go for asos own brand. Just quite a handy central place to look at lots of different brands :)

I used to really like oasis and warehouse but obviously they're only online now. Usually I just stick to Mango, New Look and ASOS. I got loads of nice things in the mango sale so that was pretty good. Also when I was on holiday in London I got some nice dresses and shorts from UNIQLO which I really like and they aren't see through or a crop top so I was happy!

Miseryisabutterfly · 23/08/2021 09:03

I’d look out for Cos, Arket and & other stories sales. Their stuff is always very heavily reduced.

ThroughThinkandThing · 23/08/2021 09:09

@WiggIyWoo I buy all my jeans on eBay - I know what style/brand I want, and rarely have an issue. It isn't as instant as going to eg Next and knowing they will have the right item, but I rarely have to wait for more than a couple of weeks.

Almost all my clothes and shoes now are eBay or charity shop.

onlychildhamster · 23/08/2021 09:16

Joules sales, Oliver bonas sale, hush sale, charity shops, monsoon. I don't tend to spend more than £35 on a dress (I might make an exception but it has to be very very special).

My 'uniform' is dress (usually black or navy/khaki or patterned or floral), blazer (for work)/jumper (you can get cheap jumpers anywhere) and Barbour coat and m & s tights (winter). I think it's the cheapest way to get dressed as 1 dress is a whole outfit so a £35 dress costs less than jeans and a top.

Same !

Ironically - I've had more success picking up jeans looking at style and size in a charity shop than ordering 5 pairs on asos .

I love the thrill of the find with charity shopping :D my friends laugh because I can more than afford whatever I want , it just seems wasteful ! ( although don't talk to me about beauty and skincare wastage!)

Ariela · 23/08/2021 11:19

Charity shop. I tend to go on a Tuesday, they've sorted some of the weekend's incoming stock.
Mountain Warehouse - check out their sale rail. All very wearable and good quality that lasts.
For bog standards
polos that don't leach colour, decent shorts try Cotton traders and M&S - currently quite a few sale bargains.
Seasalt is worth looking at on their sale rail too. Not the cheapest but looks smart and classic and lasts forever

thedevilinablackdress · 23/08/2021 12:55

I'm nearer 50 than 40 and get the occasional thing from Monki. Their denim in particular is good. You have to be selective to avoid flimsy polyester. Just like in H&M etc.

Divebar2021 · 23/08/2021 13:00

I like the cotton and denim from Monki but prefer Cos & Arket for better quality pieces. My new discovery is Lindex which is also Scandinavian I believe.

TK maxx. Some beautiful clothes at a fraction of other shops High quality second hand on eBay Practice bidding on low cost items first and then progress You can get lovely things but you need to know which shapes suit you I’ve bought ghost Episode Etc

MrsP2018 · 24/08/2021 01:35

Ebay all the way for me as I'm skint or I do like a good charity shop challenge!!

urbanbuddha · 24/08/2021 01:41

Charity shops in more upmarket areas. Take your time and be highly selective. You'll soon find out which ones are good.
I don't rate Monki for quality tbh.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 24/08/2021 05:32

ASOS - they often have 20% off everything if you sign up to their emails.
Also Very - they sell all brands and they have a good sale, and often have 20% off codes.
John Lewis sale.

IrishMamaMia · 24/08/2021 08:20

Great thread, I really like the tips on here. I tend to get basics like tops and jeans in M&S, H&m, Tesco and Uniqlo. I use all the sales and offers. I've gotten some more fashiony bits in New Look, Primark to make my look a bit more on trend. I also hunt for unusual bits in charity stores and spend quite a bit on costume jewellery.
Like others on here, I'd like to become a bit more sustainable and save for some nice pieces that will last as I tend to get quite a it of wear from things :)
