Double faced wool coats

Can anybody explain the difference in construction please? I’ve always seen double faced coats in the past and thought that a coat without a lining was a reflection of poor quality and the company scrimping, but I’ve noticed more pricey coats are also being made like this. Are they warmer? Or are they just really difficult to get on over a jumper? Thanks!

Double faced means the lining of the coat is made of exactly the same material as the outside.

So, yes, warmer.

Also massively more expensive to produce as it’s twice as much expensive coat fabric. (Usually wool.) They’re also usually beautifully made, so that apart from the label and the edgings you could hardly tell the inside from the outside. Sometimes they’re fully reversible. I have one that’s the same cashmere houndstooth inside and out. It’s the loveliest, warmest, softest thing imaginable.

Absolutely no scrimping involved!

I have never seen a double faced coat but I accidentally bought some double faced fabric once from a mill shop and it was indeed absolutely beautiful quality and would have definitely made a higher not a lower end garment.

It would have cost even more than twice as much to weave as as well as the two faces you have the fibres locking the two halves together.

I’ve often wondered how double facing is actually done ...
