what do you wear most days?

do you mix skirts/dresses with trousers/jeans, or tend to stick to one type of clothing?

im rural-ish and long to incorporate more dresses through all seasons!

Knee length dresses and cardigans most of the time, I’m short and it’s easier than shortening everything. With bare legs or cropped leggings in summer and tights in winter. Walk the dog in the same clothes unless going for a major off road hike, just add walking sandals/walking shoes/calf length country boots as weather and terrain dictates. Do put jeans on for gardening to avoid bug bites and scratches.

Bobmonkfish · 21/08/2021 23:33

I wear jeans, leggings (sometimes with a skirt) t-shirts, jumpers, trainers, wellies. Last time I wore tights was in March 2020 (to the office).

womaninatightspot · 21/08/2021 23:37

I'm tall and wear lots of dresses. This is mainly because dresses can be quite forgiving fit wise and I buy mainly online/ ebay.

RedLemon · 21/08/2021 23:46

Skinny jeans in denim/khaki/darker teal colours paired with light knit jumpers or peachy/earthy brown/white shirts with rolled up sleeves or knitted sleeveless tops. Either Birkenstock Gizeh sandals or TOMS for footwear, or my trusty wellies if it’s been raining or I’m wading through dewy grass with the dog in the mornings.

Winter time tends to be the same bottoms but thicker knit jumpers and a wax jacket or longer coat with fur lined calf or knee high tan/brown waterproof boots; or knee high dresses, wool waistcoat or waterfall cardigan with thermal tights and same boots or wellies. Lots of nice autumny scarves and shawls too and I love a good drop earring in beads/semiprecious stones/ceramic any time of year. I love autumn. I feel like I do “cosy” style better than summer style. Plus can’t wait to get the stove going again! Ooh I’m feeling all excited for autumn now! (Sorry, tangent Blush!)

Bagelsandbrie · 21/08/2021 23:54

I live in jeans and t shirts and hoodies. And either Boots or dark trainers. Everything gets covered in mud. I have given up trying to be stylish. It’s so frustrating. Just feels pointless! The most stylish thing I have- if you can call it that!- is a long Seasalt waterproof Mac thing!

ConfusedParticle · 21/08/2021 23:58

These all sound equally great, I love how no two people approach it the same way!

thank you.

Also, I would love to incorporate some plain style dresses and skirts, I have a long rain coat which works well with them, so may try it out more this autumn.

If I was going to get muddy or hike/walk, etc I tend to wear leggings in wellies or boots.

I have found that when it rains, I am no worse off in a raincoat and skirt than if I wore jeans or leggings. In fact, the jeans and leggings stick more and tend to dry slower.

I love that old country look where you often see models (perhaps unrealistically, but hey ho) wearing long tweed coats and wellies with a gorgeous tea dress underneath;)

I'll be honest I live rurally and haven't seen a single person wearing a skirt since we moved.

Everyone here wears athleisure (everyone spends a lot of time walking their enormous dog).

Even the men just wear joggers. It's all purely functional.

During the winter people still wear leggings, they just wear a fleece over the top. In fact it's wall to wall fleeces.

The reality of country clothing is kind of depressing! I struggled with it at first and bought more "country casual" clothes like a Barbour, but that's been dumped in favour of far better North Face I'm afraid.

Ha! You must live near me. Grin
Nobloat21 · 22/08/2021 09:23

Yeah, it purely functional. So much mud. The only time I wear nice clothes is for work. It is quite depressing. Nobody is very fashion conscious.

lazylinguist · 22/08/2021 09:51

Not many dresses around here! I wear Craghopper walking trousers a lot, jeans when I'm not out walking the dog or about to. Trousers or skirts for work (smart casual). In my experience the 'country' outfit look you see in magazines is fantasy - nobody dresses like that! Also, while it's nice to think one woud look country chic in Barbours and tweed, in reality I think they make you look both pretentious and bulky and frumpy unless you're a tall, willowy model!

ElspethFlashman · 22/08/2021 10:41

Also the countryside is cold and windy and rainy and grey and you want clothes that dry out quickly and are breathable.

Coogee · 22/08/2021 11:13

I wear all sorts. Whatever is appropriate for what I am doing at the time, and the weather.

I assume I would do the same if I lived in a town.

Bluntness100 · 22/08/2021 11:16

I live semi rurally, everyone here is in trousers, jeans etc. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone in a dress. But it doesn’t matter. Buy and wear what you like, you don’t need to copy others.

Franklyfrost · 22/08/2021 11:40

Wellies, jeans and a big jumper. Honestly I look like I live down a lane. (I do live down a lane).

Franklyfrost · 22/08/2021 11:42

When I lived in town it was much more fun dressing up. I also really enjoy people watching in the city, especially the really thought through outfits. But we have a lot more trees here which is even better than spotting hot pink Chloe boots.

lazylinguist · 22/08/2021 11:48

I can't really be arsed dressing up anyway, so I'm quite glad I live in a place where nobody else does either! My parents have given me some money for my birthday to spend on clothes, and I have to resist the temptation to go for smart, elegant stuff, because I'll never wear it!

AlphabetAerobics · 22/08/2021 11:54

I live very rurally and used to treat Vogue as an instruction manual.

I wear a lot of cashmere year round for warmth, have dozens of scarves, for practicality usually wear trail shoes or hiking boots. Have a weakness for coats and last year’s shearling coat may have been a little “over-ambitious”.

Only major faux-pas I’ve made was non-waterproof mascara - turned up at a social looking like Pierrot.

Nobody gives a fuck about fashion around here.

Squills · 22/08/2021 12:06

I wear a lot of Seasalt clothing.

In colder weather... Walking boots, Dubarry and Penelope Chilvers boots with thick leggings or skinny jeans, shirts, cashmere jumpers/cardigans, gilets, Rab down jackets/coats. I knit my own socks - wool or alpaca.

Summer... linen dresses/skirts, I like the longer lengths, so midi/maxi, Birkenstock clogs/sandals

Darklane · 22/08/2021 12:18

Just don’t see anyone in dresses, not even the men.
It’s jeans or similar, T shirts in summer, a thick wool jumper or three in winter. Trainers if it’s dry, wellies most of the time. Fleeces, waterproof coats that dry quick. Lots of scarves, hats ( woolly or waterproof).
I have a couple of really nice shearling coats, one full length with a hood, if I’m going posh with cashmere jumper & smarter trousers.
It’s jolly cold up here in the northern hills & windy & the way to tell summer from winter mostly is the temperature of the horizontal rain.

ConfusedParticle · 22/08/2021 12:29

you don’t need to copy others

rather a bizarre presumption Grin
my life is wall to wall north face and fjallraven, I'm just a bit bored with it.

GoodnightGrandma · 22/08/2021 12:31

No one wears skirts round here. It’s jodhpurs and leggings with wellies and walking boots. Layers on top for the ever changing weather.

ConfusedParticle · 22/08/2021 12:35

it's odd how everyone equates a dress or skirt with 'dressing up'.
The shit I wear is far from dressy, but I wouldn't wear a dress shlepping through fells in a gale.

I don't like trends or fashion, but I do like how skirts suit my body shape, etc.
This woks ok for me in winter on occasions where I am just going to the next town, or some random shopping. I don't get twatted by mud balls or chicken shit going to the little co-op.

I have also never worn tweeds. The mention of the model in pretty stuff was more Toast and Plumo than Barbour tbh.

QueenofLouisiana · 22/08/2021 12:40

Day to day at home I dress from the feet up: do I need trainers, boots or wellies to walk the dog? Then go from there. Today I need wellies so have picked straight fit jeans to tuck in. Yesterday, trainers were fine so I had a jumpsuit.

I have sea salt waterproof coats, Didrikson for winter. I do wear skirts if the weather allows for footwear to go with it!

BigPyjamas · 22/08/2021 12:41

Semi rural and I much prefer dresses to jeans.

In winter with tights and boots. In summer with anything really.

I don't really care what others think, I'm comfy and happy with a dress, boots and wool coat or Barbour.

Caveat is that I'm not a farmer or horsey person, so it's mostly walks, or hauling logs, cutting branches etc
