How to fix a split in my lovely shoes?

Hi wise Mumsnetters,

I have this pair of shoes that I love (pic attached). Unfortunately they've developed a split and I would really like to fix them. Any ideas about how I might do so?

Thanks Lynn

Superglue?

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs. I tried super glue 😞

Looking at them they look like a lost cause, patent will always look a bit tatty if you try and glue them. Can you not find another pair same or similar?

@Lowlifeinhighplaces unfortunately not, they are an old (but well loved and looked after) pair of pied a terre block heels. I have looked on eBay to see if I can find another pair.

Think I may ask Timpsons if there is anything they can do, and if not resign myself to saying goodbye!

Looks impossible to fix to me. Have you tried Jones the Bootmaker or Nine West as they will have very similar shoes to those.

Might be worth looking at Vinted or Depop for a second-hand pair?

Find a bit of soft leather and cut a strip from it. Buy some leather glue (Bostick does a good one; it comes in a tube). Stick one end of the leather strip to the inside of the shoe and let it dry. When it's dry, put leather glue along the edges of the split, and on and the unstuck part of the new leather strip, and pull the whole thing together. The new strip inside the shoe will help to hold the mend together. It won't look great, but it should hold. I'd suggest finding something small and decorative to cover the mend with - a pretty button or similar.

That looks like an inner split of the shoe?

I would just try and find another pair

Mosaic123 · 21/08/2021 16:03

Can you get someone to restore them using a contrasting edging overlapping and therefore hiding the split. I'm thinking of a black leather edging for example.

@LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE are you in or near London? I took a pretty manky handbag to Bag Spa (also Shoe Spa) near Kings Cross and they did a really good job of restoring it, although I admit it was just battered rather than torn.

You could try sending them a photo or two and they can advise shoespa.co.uk/ Smile

Thanks so much for all your suggestions! I have said goodbye to my shoes.

And ordered a new pair from eBay Grin

Sometimes one just needs a change!
