Really thick hair

Any ideas for hairstyles for really thick hair? How can I make it look less thick?

Its currently below shoulder length. Usually the shorter I go the thicker it looks.

ask your hairdresser to thin it out.

I have very thick hair, I have it styled how I want it, then she thins it out. I have it done every 4 or 5 weeks.
I had it done on Thursday, feels great to have the weight off and my hair is much shorter than yours

Do you actually get it thinned out with each visit? Makes sense actually but I didnt think of that. I get my colour done every 5 weeks, but only get cut every few months.

yes I do otherwise its unmanagable

I have really thick hair the same length as you. I have an undercut and then the hairdresser thins it out. When my hair is down you can't see the undercut and it looks like I have a normal amount of hair instead of a huge bushy mane. You can see the undercut if it's tied up. Which I like but I appreciate not everyone would Smile

I did the same as you @glitterskull, although I decided to give it a go at the start of lockdown so that if I didn't like it, only DH would see it anyway! I loved it at first but I did miss styling my hair - it's since grown out and I decided to chop my hair all just above shoulder length now. I would second getting it thinned out, I've tried that previously and it's a great option if you want to keep the length in.

I never go shorter than my shoulders and have it cut / thinned out every 6 weeks. Even thinned out, if I go above my shoulders it looks like lego hair. I keep it tied up 99% of the time so don't have a particularly fancy style just a few layers.

I have mine thinned , I also have a pair of thinning scissors and do it in between cuts . It's sooo fat !

Layers. Lots of layers - but mine is curly as well as thick. Thinning mine would make it insane.

You could style it half up, half down? I do a braid headband type thing round the front of my face to get it out the way.

Mine is very thick and just below shoulder length.
I get it cut in layers and the hairdresser thins it out every single time. I get it cut every 7-8 weeks.

I’ve had a chin length Bob for the first time in my life as an incredibly thick-haired person. Amazingly it looks great and although I do need to straighten it, it doesn’t take long and actually sits nicely. Need it cut every 6-8 weeks but it’s lovely and I’d never have believed my really thick hair would suit this cut. I needed two full sets of curlers to do my perm (in the 90s) and usually had to book a double appt at the hairdressers due to my thickness (of hair!).

I have mine deep cut, which is sort of slicing into it with the scissors to take the weight out of it.

I have very thick, 2C hair, past my shoulders. I'd say layers too. I once had a hairdresser use thinning scissors on it. Apparently these are mainly used on mens, short hair! She used them very high up on my head, so for months/years after, I had smaller, short hairs sticking out my head where she'd cut them!!! I'd only use them them past the ears/shoulders level.
