Acrylic tips/infills advice

Hi

I got my first set of acrylic tips about 12 days ago. Not very long

Almond shape, about half a cm past fingertip

One tip snapped after two days, I only noticed it as I was holding a soup spoon. Nothing strenuous!

One has just come off a nail completely again without me noticing, I was drying my hair. I look daft with one missing nail.

Ive an appointment for infills on Friday but I feel like just sacking the whole thing off, they are not strong at all!

Ive a suspicion the nail tech has not prepared the nail properly. One tip popped off as she was buffing and she had to start that nail again Hmm

So are acrylic tips and the gel builder as weak as it appears or has my nail tech done something wrong?

I hardly hand wash anything (dishwasher). Am in no way a manual worker and have been taking extra care because I am so unused to acrylic tips.

Advice very welcome!

Are you saying she applied the tip & builder gel, and then the whole thing popped off while she was buffing the finished nail?! If so, then she’s definitely not doing something right, and I’d be inclined to find another nail tech.

When I get my acrylics done, they last for AGES! It's all about the nail prep and application. After 12 days I would be miffed that nails had come clean off. I've had tips just snap with a previous nail tech while on holiday. The nail tech on the cruise said there was too much acrylic on the tip which caused it to snap off when just pushing the button for the lift!

I'd sack the infills off and go elsewhere for a new set.

Yes! I was appalled and she said she must have had the wrong size acrylic tip on.

I normally do my own nails with gel nail polish but after an illness they are weak and I was told a few months of acrylic tips would allow them to grow without daily wear.

So cross that they haven't even lasted two weeks. The cuticle area looks untidy as it's grown out too.

I think I will ask her to just soak them all off and I'll go elsewhere. Hmm

The wrong size tip would a) have been obvious and b) still stuck down with superglue which doesn’t normally pop off in the space of an hour.
She might have had the wrong style of tip. I.e. if you have quite flat nail beds, and she was using a tip with a strong curve, then the glue would not have been able to adhere to the nail bed.
I think your plan to get her to soak off and go elsewhere is a good one!

Ok you have absolutely assured me it's a nail salon issue and not me because can you believe she told me it's better to do LESS prep as I explained the products I normally use.

Mad

I'm normally so laid back but this really has me pissed, DH has taken DS out to the shop 'cos I keep showing him my hand Grin

If you are trying to grow your own nails, you might consider either gel or acrylic overlays just on your natural nail. You’d probably need to have them square/oval until your natural length grows up, but tips put a lot of stress on the nail plate, and a couple of months of just overlays would allow your nails to grow.

ReginaaPhalange · 18/08/2021 20:05

@frogsbreath LESS PREP?!!?? Is this tech even qualified?!! It's all about the prep lol!

Get them soaked off and book in with someone who knows the basics in nail care lol!

I don't think she had much to choose from tbh, she wasn't very well stocked.

I'll look at other salons, there's absolutely loads and I chose this salon from two friend's recommendations but they only go for gel polish and nail art-not acrylic or gel builder.

Thanks for reassuring me this is not the norm, ladies

After a few months of acrylic tips your own nails will be totally ruined .

Oh dear, what a mess I've made of this.

I think I'll just need to have short, stubby nails for a bit. I'm not a vain person in any other way except my nails, they were always so lovely.

Still thanks everyone for giving me advice, it's an expensive luxury service in my house and if it's not going to work out I'd rather know now than before I got poorly prepped nails infilled.

I would go with just builder gel or theres a sort of acrylic dipping powder, you can have that on your natural nail (after suitable prep) and it should just grow with your nail, and go for infills as required.

Your nails should grow fairly fast and without the problem of tips popping off all over.
