Hair dye help for a novice

I normally go every 8 weeks or so for a trim amd I get aveda demi colour on my hair just to blend out my greys a little. I don't have loads of grays but the ones j do have (temples and parting) and quite obvious as I have darkish hair.

I dont want to go down the route of permanent colour as I like being able to put off colouring my hair if needed without having obvious roots so semi/demi works perfectly for me.

I am on a money saving drive and just can't justify the 100 ish quid it costs to get my hair done with a simple trim and demi colour so looking to do it myself but never done it before.

Can anyone recommend a good semi dye that I can grab from boots or superdrug? Is there anything I should avoid? I'm ashamed to say I used lightening spray on my hair a couple of years ago but I'm guessing that shouldn't be a problem as it was so long ago? Someone said something to me about salts and hair fizzing and falling out!? Should I strand test as well as patch test or is semi not so much of a risk due to coating hair rather than going deep into the strand?

As you can probably guess, I have no clue. I'd just like to have blended greys, shiny hair and a healthier bank account!

Tried to upload pic on app but it didn't work so hopefully this one will work. Current hair with last demi done about 5-6 weeks ago (roots starting 6o go beautifully oily as I haven't washed it for 2 days!). Hairdresser mixes my dye with red undertones as apparently that's what I naturally have. can't say I really noticed that before but I'm no expert and paid little attention.

I'd find out what the stylist uses and buy that from an online hair supplier.
I tone my blonde at home with professional colour/developer and it costs me about a tenner to buy online each time.
If you can't buy the exact brand look for the shade numbers in other brands.
For deposit only colour so demi permanent I use 6% developer but ask her what she's using on you.
I wouldn't use box dye as you don't know whats in them and they are not as predicable shade wise.

To do your own roots without overlapping colour is difficult, particularly around the back. I’m learning this as I have similar colour to you but with a balayage on the ends.
Have you asked what the cost is of just a roots application with no cut and blow? For me that’s £35 and I’m finding it difficult to get a good root application so I think that’s worth it.

I use this:

www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Treatments/Hair-Masks/TRESemmé-Colour-Enhancing-Hair-Mask-Dark-Brunette-200ml/p/804038#pdp__details

It’s a demi-permanent so it lasts up to 8 washes. I use it about once a week to blend my grey hairs - it doesn’t turn them dark brown but it makes them go a dark blonde - like lowlights - so it looks multitonal and quite natural . It’s really easy to use and gives a nice shine. Sometimes I use a blonde one - it doesn’t colour the brown hair but it does turn the greys blonde so my hair looks sun streaked.
